SOME NOTEWORTHY MAMMALS IN MALAYSIA RECORDED BY JIM CHANCE by R. Subharaj

In April, 1991,I met anAmerican gentleman by the nameof Jim Chanceat Fraser'sHill, Malavsia.who hadbeen visiting the various nature sites of bothwest andEast Malaysia for thepist few months. We wenl bird-watchinga coupleof timesand also had a few meals tos.ih.r. During-histhese.occasions, hedescribedto me the many mammal species which hehad en'counteredon travels.I observedthat he was fairly competentin identifyingthe animals we saw on our walks,be it a deadMock Viper or a speciesof bird. Nash, the resident naturalistof Fraser'silill supportedmy opinionof his-ability. I told Jim abo, utthe Tle Pangolinnewsletter, and he gbnerouslylisted down the noteworthymammals he hadseen in Maliysi4-notes, which is presented-herewith,-However, it mustbe uoderstoodthat in_the absence of field his iden:tificationof the mammalsin thelist shouldremain unconfirmed.
