Laivatekniikka Pentti Häkkinen 05/2011 Tässä opinnäytetyössä tutkittiin Turun ammattikorkeakoulun ja arkkitehti Aaro Söderlundin yhteistyössä kehittämää FEC-konseptia; suurta kelluvaa kaupunkirakennetta, jota suunnitellaan rakennettavaksi Tianjiniin, Kiinaan. Työn alussa on selvitetty FEC:n taustoja ja toimintaperiaatteita. Tämän jälkeen jaotellaan erilaiset kelluvat rakenteet kategorioihin ja tarkastellaan rakennettuja sekä suunniteltuja referenssejä. Seuraavaksi katsotaan hieman laivanrakennuksesta tuttuja vakavuuslaskuja ja esitetään mahdollinen kelluvuusratkaisu. Työn lopussa tarkastellaan erilaisia elämänkaaritilanteita ja pohditaan katastrofitilanteiden mahdollisia vaikutuksia FEC:n turvallisuuteen. Viimeisessä kappaleessa käydään läpi lisäselvitystä vaativat kohdat ja pohditaan hieman FEC:n erilaisia mahdollisuuksia ja ongelmakohtia. Työtä on tehty käyttäen hyväksi löydettyjä tutkimuksia ja artikkeleita, laiva-alalta tuttuja sääntöjä sekä opiskelutovereiden ja Pentti Häkkisen & Aaro Söderlundin tarjoamia näkökulmia aiheeseen. At the beginning, we take a look on the FEC and the idea behind it as well as some of the basic principles of it. After this, we divide the floating structures in to categories and take a look at the built and developed references. Next we introduce some basic stability calculations and present a possible solution for the displacement. At the end we view different lifespan issues and assess the possible effects of a catastrophe situation on the safety of the FEC. Last chapter takes a look on some of the issues that need more research and also gives some insights on the possible problems and possibilities of the FEC. The thesis was done by using various material gathered along the way, regulations used by the naval industry and also the insights given by fellow students and Pentti Häkkinen & Aaro Söderlund. It studies the different technical requirements of a very large floating structure or a Mega-Float as it’s commonly referred as. The main reasons for developing floating cities is simple: due to the population growth land areas are under heavy use and therefore land value has risen dramatically. Especially large coastal cities are put in a tough spot when the need for expansion rises. For a long time the solution has been vertical; building skyscrapers and other tall buildings has been the easiest way. Thanks to technical advancements over the past few decades ocean colonization has become both technically and financially possible. 1.1 Climate change Climate change has been a major focus of global attention for the past decade. Global warming has caused the sea levels to rise in the 20th century at the average speed of 1,7 ± 0,5 mm y-1 (Solomon, S et al. 2007, 409). Reports also show that as we have come closer to the 21st century, the rate at which sea level has risen has increased; estimations based on satellite altimetry suggest that the sea level rise has been as high as 3,1 ± 0,5 mm y-1, but tide gauges show a similar decadal pattern in the sea level diagrams since the 1950s, so it still remains to be seen is it a matter of decadal variability or a change in long term. What also needs to be noted is, that satellite altimetry is a relatively new method of measuring. Before the early 1990s man relied solely on tide gauges, so the results aren’t entirely comparable. Sea level rise varies around the world. In some regions the sea level rise is several times the average rate, where as in other regions the sea levels have dropped. Areas with low coastlines and strong interannual variability in sea levels are under heavy observation. The Netherlands suffer every year from flooding, and the Maldives are in danger to be completely wiped out. If sea levels reach the 0,44 m above 1990s sea 3 levels, as suggested by scientists, land reclamation and building dams just isn’t efficient any more. 1.2 Floating EcoCity Tianjin is a harbour city of Beijing on the delta of Huang He in China. It is one of the fastest developing industrial regions in the world, with an annual growth of c. 15% in 2009. The area is populated by 12M inhabitants and it is one of the three central areas of development in modern China, along with Hong Kong and Shanghai, thus it provides an excellent test ground for urban architecture and city development. (Söderlund & Kääriä) The Tianjin area faces many different challenges – both human and natural. Soaring land prices, pollution and ever-growing population are just the newest additions to the list of challenges, which is already filled with various natural problems such as sandstorms, floods, tides and even earthquakes and tsunamis. The water is polluted and acid rains pour down frequently. Investors are already looking for new solutions. The Floating EcoCity –concept (FEC- concept) is aimed to ease these problems and help Tianjin to continue its growth. By building floating islands, the city would be able to expand in a whole new way. The skills to build something this big are already there within the shipbuilding world. After all, the worlds largest cruise ships aren’t much different to the FEC – basically only the propulsion is missing. The FEC consists of two basic units, the hexagonal platforms and the EcoFlo Vessels. The latter ones would be newbuilt, but also Malaccamax-size (470*65*20 m) tankers could be used in case of recession. Both, the hexagonal platforms and the EcoFlo Vessels, would have central parks framed by the apartments and covered by a tent, which creates its own mini-biosphere for the FEC. 4 Figure 1 Intersection of the hexagonal platform structure Figure 1 explains a little about the structure of the FEC, when it is structured of the hexagonal caissons. The whole structure would stand on six separate caissons, which would provide the buoyancy. On top of that, there would be the lower platform with all the storage and maintenance space. And on top of that there would be the upper platform, with the apartments and the central park. Figure 2 Hexagonal caissons (Söderlund 16.12.2010, personal notification) 5 Figure 2 shows the positioning of six hexagonal caissons below the lower platform. Hexagonal platforms would be standing on six smaller hexagonal caissons, which would offer unmanned storage space for pumps, batteries and other necessities. Each caisson would have a column on its weight point, which would be in line with the columns that support the biospheric tent. The caissons would be detachable for maintenance situations; the FEC would be designed so that it would still survive if one of the caissons should be removed or damaged. Between the caissons there would be “ButterFlexes” that absorb and collect the energy caused by the waves and the movement of the caissons. The FEC is also aims to tackle the ecological problems by being CO2-negative, with the central parks greenery purifying the air, water and soil in addition to producing oxygen. The improvement of water quality would be handled by aquatic macrophyte farms, which would locate under the pontoons next to the caissons. 6 Figure 3 Upper platform with the biospheric tent (Söderlund 16.12.2010, personal notification) The infrastructure would be built on two different platforms set on top of each other.

Here we present revised taxonomic descriptions for all known species of the bryozoan genus Pseudoflustra, and use the present-day distributions and phylogenetic relationships between these species to infer the historical biogeography of the genus. Nine species belonging to the genus Pseudoflustra are recognized in the Arctic and North Atlantic. One new species, previously identified as Ichthyaria aviculata, is described as Pseudoflustra radeki sp. nov. Another species, previously assigned to Smittoidea as S. perrieri, is transferred to Pseudoflustra. Biogeographical analysis of Pseudoflustra reveals that species distributions mostly match current patterns pertaining in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. Distributions were probably shaped by recent geological history as present-day current directions in the Arctic Ocean are believed to have been similar for at least the last 120 000 years. Phylogenetic analysis of Pseudoflustra places the five Arctic-North Atlantic species in a clade crownward of a paraphyletic grouping of North Atlantic species. Given that the Arctic Ocean was fully glaciated until 18 000 years, the most likely explanation for this phylogeographical pattern is that species of Pseudoflustra colonized the Arctic relatively recently from North Atlantic sources.

    RESEARCH COMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH COMMUNICATIONS The biogeography of the Plastisphere: 541 implications for policy Linda A Amaral-Zettler1,2*, Erik R Zettler3, Beth Slikas1, Gregory D Boyd3, Donald W Melvin3, Clare E Morrall4, Giora Proskurowski5, and Tracy J Mincer6† Microplastics (particles less than 5 mm) numerically dominate marine debris and occur from coastal waters to mid-ocean gyres, where surface circulation concentrates them. Given the prevalence of plastic marine debris (PMD) and the rise in plastic production, the impacts of plastic on marine ecosystems will likely increase. Microscopic life (the “Plastisphere”) thrives on these tiny floating “islands” of debris and can be transported long distances. Using next-generation DNA sequencing, we characterized bacterial communities from water and plastic samples from the North Pacific and North Atlantic subtropical gyres to determine whether the composition of different Plastisphere communities reflects their biogeographic origins. We found that these communities differed between ocean basins – and to a lesser extent between polymer types – and displayed lat- itudinal gradients in species richness. Our research reveals some of the impacts of microplastics on marine bio- diversity, demonstrates that the effects and fate of PMD may vary considerably in different parts of the global ocean, and suggests that PMD mitigation will require regional management efforts. Everyone in American Samoa have a friend, sibling, family member or relative who are or have been in the military, and many use the military to gain access to education and money, and to help their family. In this thesis I explore the process of becoming U.S. Marines amongst a group of young people in American Samoa working to meet the requirements to go to boot camp. I argue that the time spent training for boot camp is simultaneously a period where they take the first steps towards acquiring the habitus and mindset of a Marine. I look at how they use shared values, brotherhood, as well as ways of thinking about progress, pain and how to live life, to create and maintain a shared identity as Marines. This topic is looked at through the lens of the body and the mind, and how they work together to create the Marine as a holistic and lifelong identity.

They build landfills and expensive artificial islands. The ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface. Those countries (or persons of wealth) starting the early colonization of the ocean may obtain advantages through additional territory or creating their own independent state. An old idea is building a big ship. The best solution to this problem, however, is the provision of floating cities, islands, and states. The author’s idea is to use for floating cities, islands, and states a cheap floating platform created from a natural ice field taken from the Arctic or Antarctic oceans. These cheap platforms protected by air-film (bottom and sides) and a conventional insulating cover (top) and having a cooling system can exist for an unlimited time. They can be increased in number or size at any time, float in warm oceans, travel to different continents and countries, serve as artificial airports, harbors and other marine improvements, as well as floating cities and industrial bases for virtually any use. Once thought to be a far off notion, the colonization of the ocean seems to be within reach. We will discuss a new method, proposed by scientist/engineer/inventor Alexander Bolonkin, that would create mobile, interlocking, floating ocean-platforms from which to build upon. This method, combined with an industry that would enable floating cities to flourish - the production of algae as biofuel - could lead to the next frontier. Introduction Ocean colonization is the theory and practice of permanent human settlements of oceans. These settlements may float freely on the ocean surface, be attached to the bottom of the ocean, or be somewhere in between [1]. The main reason for colonizing the ocean would be to expand the amount of livable area. Colonizing the surface of the ocean would also open up a whole new economy based on tourism, aquaculture (the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and aquatic plants), and other ocean based industries. Ocean colonization would also provide a testing ground for space colonization. It seems that colonizing the ocean is simpler and would probably occur first. The lessons learned from running an ocean colony may prove useful to future outer space colonization efforts. Floating cities are not a new concept. In fact, similar communities already exist in the form of houseboats, oil platforms, hotels, and cruise ships (which are often called floating cities).

Specifcally, the role of colonization and dispersal events throughout a species’ evolutionary history often remains elusive. The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) faces multiple conservation challenges due to its migratory nature and philopatric behaviour. Here, using 4207 mtDNA sequences, we analysed the colonisation patterns and distribution of genetic diversity within a major ocean basin (the Atlantic), a regional rookery (Cabo Verde Archipelago) and a local island (Island of Boa Vista, Cabo Verde). Data analysis using hypothesis‑driven population genetic models suggests the colonization of the Atlantic has occurred in two distinct waves, each corresponding to a major mtDNA lineage. We propose the oldest lineage entered the basin via the isthmus of Panama and sequentially established aggregations in Brazil, Cabo Verde and in the area of USA and Mexico. The second lineage entered the Atlantic via the Cape of Good Hope, establishing colonies in the Mediterranean Sea, and from then on, re‑colonized the already existing rookeries of the Atlantic. At the Cabo Verde level, we reveal an asymmetric gene fow maintaining links across island‑specifc nesting groups, despite signifcant genetic structure.

For many of the approximate 300 oil platforms, their service life is approaching the end. Thus far, only a handful of offshore platforms in Malaysian waters have been decommissioned mainly due to lack of regulatory framework and weak decommissioning plans. The shortage of decommissioning yards provides another major challenge in managing onshore disposal. With a number of options viable in decommissioning our used platforms, a review of these possibilities is timely. The scope of this paper entails the decommissioning methods particularly in the Gulf of Mexico, where conditions are similar to Malaysian waters. Evaluations of methodology as well as sustainability implications are discussed. The usual methods of decommissioning involve any of these options: complete removal, partial removal, reefing or re­using. Employing the aspects of sustainability as a pillar of the study, a conceptual framework of a viable decommissioning scheme is drawn. It was conceptually found that refurbishing the whole of the structure as a livable hub has its own unique potentials. Given the calm conditions of Malaysian waters and the sturdy design of the platforms, the restored structures hold possibilities either as ocean townships or futuristic cities such as a 'sea­stead'.

Larson fl eet of thirteen Portuguese vessels under the command of Pedro Álvares Cabral set sail from Lisbon for the East Indies just two years after Vasco da Gama fi rst rounded the Cape of Good Hope. In late May 1500, inclement weather at the Cape separated the vessel commanded by Diego Diaz from the others, blowing it well south of its intended course. Steering north to regain their way, Diaz and crew caught sight of land on 10 August along the coast of Anosy, Madagascar’s southeast extremity (fi g. 1). The day was the Feast of São Lourenço, and Diaz named the big island (Madagascar) for European cartography after the feast.1 As far as it is known, this was the fi rst sighting of Madagascar by seafarers hailing directly from the Atlantic via the Cape route. European sailors and mapmakers continued to identify Madagascar as São Lourenço (Portuguese) and Saint-Laurent (French) for centuries to come. From the early decades of the sixteenth century to the French abandonment of Madagascar in 1674, Anosy in southeast Madagascar was an important site of European-Malagasy interac- tion. The meeting grounds of Anosy played a signifi cant role in the early modern history of the southwest Indian Ocean, much as the Cape of Good Hope or Kilwa and Mombasa did, but they are poorly known outside a close circle of francophone Madagascar experts. I am a junior at the college double majoring in Biology and Health Sciences. Outside of academics, I play the violin in the W&M Symphony Orchestra and a string quartet, conduct research on synthetic biology and genetic engineering, and, of course, I am a member of the International Relations Club. As a member of the club, I have worked with the philanthropy team, International Relations Cares, competed in and staffed conferences, and I am a member of the &MUN IX Secretariat. I was first introduced to MUN when I came to William & Mary, and I have enjoyed traveling to competitions and staffing ever since. I have been a fan of sci-fi and fantasy stories for as long as I can remember, and I’m excited to be able to bring elements of both genres into this committee.
