Outlook for 2014 Meeting Team USA selected itself from the recent 95th USA national championships in Sacramento. Spots were offered to athletes and several athletes declined nomination. Coaches added a discretionary selection. Team USA has only two returnees from last year’s lineup in Chula Vista and this is decidedly a lineup-up of youngsters. In fact the 2014 team averages 23 years of age, one of the youngest American teams ever. Houston grad Wesley Bray is the elder statesmen at 26. Bray was runner-up at the USA nationals in Sacramento where won comfortably with a world leading 8599 score. Bray will be relied upon for a big

score and leadership qualities in Marburg. Of the remaining team members, five of six all collegians. ‘Double Z’ Zach Ziemek of Wisconsin is the Big Ten champ; Wichita State’s Austin Bahner is the Missouri Valley Conference champ, consistent Chase Dalton of BYU is the Texas Relays winner, Akron’s Alex McCune is the Mid- American runner-up and J it stand for nothing, it’s just ‘J’) Patrick Smith is a three time NCAA II champ. Thomas FitzSimons, who was 3rd at the USA nationals with a PR 7642 score rounds out the American club. Dan Gooris, unat, who was last year, is the alternate.

Germany’s Team Zehnkampf, will send European champion Rico Freimuth, and a pair of former Thorpe Cup winners, Arthur Abele and Kai Kazmirek to the European champs in Zurich. 2013 IAAF WC silver medalist Michael Schrader is injured once again. Defending European winner Pascal Behrenbruch did not make the roster for Zurich. He will not compete in Marburg. Nor will 2013 NCAA champ Johannes Hock of the University of Texas. Ditto for last year’s Thorpe Cup winner Mathias Prey. But two members of last year’s winning club, Patrick Spinner (3rd) and Steffen Fricke (5th) are back and will be joined by 28 year old veteran Norman Müller, the 2008 winner in Manhattan (PR 8295) who intends to anchor this club. The remainder of the German team is youthful: Mathias Brugger, Rene Strauss, Patrick Scherfose and Julius Sommer. The latter is a student at the University of Arkansas where he is coached by Travis Geopfert who happens to be the American coach. This will be the first meet occasion in which a member of the opposing team will face his college coach. Team Zehnkampf averages nearly 26 years of age. The selection meeting for the German roster came at the Erdgas Meeting in Ratingen which was plagued by bad weather (heavy rains). Steffan Press and Lars Albert, a veteran of 7 Thorpe Cups, will coach the German team.

As always, there is no way to forecast the outcome of this meet.

There are four reasons why the host German team will be favored: -experience: in the form of Muller, 1 week shy of his 29th birthday, and Spinner and Fricke. -they have a timing advantage since it is now the height of the German CE season and late for the Americans who peaked for the NCAAs and USA nationals last month. -they have a the home field advantage, w/o any necessary travel. -Team Zehnkampf has a 4 year win streak and will be hungry to extend the run to five. Last year’s margin was razor thin.

There are four reasons why team USA will be favored: -Wesley Bray may be America’s most underrated decathlete -the USA team has had time to rest and recover from Sacramento -the collegiate connections , young legs, (ZZ, McCune and Bahner average PR is 7878) -It’s time to bring the Cup home.

Nothing is ever taken for granted at the Thorpe Cup and it is always hotly contested. In 1999 the meet was decided by a miniscule, microscopic, tiny, infinitesimal, atomic…(you get the picture!) five points. One German coach described the margin as “a puff of wind.” It was the closest team match anywhere in decathlon history. In 2010 Team Zehnkampf won by two puffs of wind, just 13 points out of a total score of over 77,000. The 2006 winning USA margin in Manhattan was a mere 57 points. Last year’s German winning margin was just 58 points. This one could very close. It’ll be no 1993 “Shellacken in Aachen.” It’s always intense, and that’s why it’s the planet’s best team affair.

Thorpe Cup History

Now the world’s most important nation vs. nation team decathlon, this meet has been variously called the VISA CUP Meet or the JEEP Challenge. And in 2007 officially took the name of The Thorpe Cup in honor of 1912 Olympic Decathlon Champion Jim Thorpe, Carlisle, PA

Page 3

The concept of an annual team match was initially conceived by VISA-USA team coach Harry Marra and Team Zehnkampf coach Claus Marek in 1993. This is the 20th of a series of annual international team between the USA and Germany. The US teams holds a 13-7 W-L advantage, but the German team has won the most recent four matches (‘10,’11,’12, ‘13). Last year’s affair in Chula Vista resulted in the closest individual battle in meet history as Prey edged American Gray Horn by a scant 6 points. In the current series, the first meeting was arranged in Aachen, Germany in 1993 where Stefan Schmid of Germany and the VISA USA team were victorious. The American team won 6 of the initial 7 team battles. One, the 1999 affair, also in Aachen was decided by a mere 5 points. Team USA got back on the winning side in 2002 with a major win in Walnut, CA, led by Tom Pappas and repeated in 2003 in Bernhausen. The 2004 meet, scheduled for Kansas State U, was cancelled by the German federation (DLV) in June, 2004. In 1996, with the meet in Edwardsville, IL, the USA squad set a world 5 man team record averaging 8121.4 points per man. Only Kip Janvrin, Mike Maczey and Pappas have won the individual title more than once. See below. In the years before the current series, USA and German decathlon teams met twice. Team USA won both, with Bruce Jenner getting a world leading score in 1974 in , Estonia (tri meet: USA/USSR/ Germany). Team USA won again in 1983 in Baton Rouge, LA. So, counting the two earlier team meetings, the Americans hold a historical 15-6 national team advantage.

Head Coach: TRAVIS GEOPFERT U of Arkansas Travis Geopfert has just finished his fifth season at the University of Arkansas in the spring of 2014 and his 12th as a collegiate coach. He is charged with coaching the field and multi-event athletes with the Razorbacks while also acting as the recruiting coordinator for the Arkansas cross country/track & field programs. In his 10 years on the sideline, Geopfert has built an impressive resume that includes an Olympian, four NCAA individual national champions, 51 first-team All-Americans, 86 NCAA qualifiers, 59 conference champions and 107 all-conference performers. Those numbers don’t include the myriad of honors bestowed upon the student- athletes that Geopfert has recruited, an array of performers that have been among the top 10 recruiting classes in the nation in each of the past three years. The work that Geopfert has done has not gone unnoticed to his peers. In 2008 he received the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association’s (USTFCCCA) Midwest Assistant Coach of the Year award for outdoor track and took the same honor indoors in 2013. His most recent honor led him to the USTFCCCA National Assistant Coach of the Year award for the 2013 indoor track season. Geopfert’s 2013 track season was not just rewarding for him as an individual, but from a team standpoint as he helped Arkansas claim its 41st NCAA Championship during the indoor track season and win the John McDonnell Program of the Year award. The team also won its second straight SEC triple crown and Geopfert’s fingerprints were all over Arkansas’ team success in 2013 as he coached student-athletes to a national title in the heptathlon, 14 All-America honors and an SEC Champion. While his overall credentials are staggering, his numbers since arriving in Fayetteville are even better. He has coached two national champions, six SEC titlists, five SEC runner-ups, 17 first-team All-Americans and five second-team All-Americans. Kevin Lazas, the 2013 NCAA heptathlon champion, tallied 6,175 points on the way to his national title, a total that ranks No. 3 in NCAA history. The lofty numbers are not limited to just the multi- events. Geopfert coached Razorbacks have etched their names into the Arkansas all-time top 10 lists 40 times in just four seasons. In addition to his duties with the Razorbacks, Geopfert is a rising star on the national stage and in 2013 coached his second Thorpe Cup, a decathlon competition between the United States and Germany. A long-time advocate of the competition, Geopfert was also a member of three Thorpe Cup championships as a competitor between 2003 and 2006. Geopfert’s coaching career began at Central Missouri State where he spent two years as an assistant coach. In that time he coached two Divison II national champions, one national runner-up, six All-Americans, five conference champions and 10 all-conference performers. A standout student-athlete for Northern Iowa, Geopfert earned All-America honors and was a three-time MVC champion. Including his professional career as an athlete, he was a two-time Drake Relays decathlon championships, three-time member of the Thorpe Cup and a six-time USA Championships qualifier in the decathlon. A native of Panora, Iowa, Geopfert earned his bachelor’s degree from Northern Iowa in 2002. He and his wife Nicole have two sons, Jones and Jax.

Head Coach: KEVIN REID Azusa Pacific U. Kevin Reid owns more national championships than any track & field coach in NAIA history, and his 13 NAIA Coach of the Year awards attest to the success he's had in elevating a storied Azusa Pacific program into one of the nation's elite track & field programs. Reid inherited a track & field dynasty when he took over the program in 1996, but he's put his own stamp on the program's success, leading the Cougars to 12 of the program's 23 national titles. Now the longest-tenured Azusa Pacific head coach with 17 seasons under his belt, Reid has guided the Cougars to eight NAIA indoor championships and four NAIA outdoor titles since taking over the winningest program in NAIA history back in 1996. Azusa Pacific swept the NAIA indoor and outdoor national championships in 2008 and 2009, the first men's track & field championship sweep in successive seasons since the early 1970s. Reid, who served as legendary track coach Terry Franson's assistant since 1989, wasted no time putting his identity on Azusa Pacific track & field when he took over for the retiring Franson in 1996. In his first-ever head coaching assignment on any level, Reid was given control and before the third month of his 1996 rookie season, he led Azusa Pacific to its first-ever NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championship, quite a feat for a program that frustratingly finished second in 8 previous indoor championship meets. For his efforts, he was named NAIA Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year. Two months later, he took a short-handed Cougar team to a second place finish at the NAIA Outdoor Championships. Regarded for his expertise in the multi-events, Reid has coached Dave Johnson, Bryan Clay, Tage Peterson, David Pope, Jordan Hudgens, and David Pichler, some of the top decathletes over the past 2 decades. Clay, the 2008 Olympic decathlon champion also won the silver medal at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics and was the 2005 world champion in the decathlon. Additionally, Reid is the coordinator of the California Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays Multi-Events meets. He was the USATF head coach of the Thorpe Cup combined events team. As a student-athlete and a member of two Azusa Pacific NAIA championship squads, competing in both the intermediate and high hurdles on the 1986 and 1988 teams. Reid posted career-bests of 53.81 in the intermediates and 14.79 in the highs. Reid also was a two-year letterman on the Cougar football team, starting as a defensive back for the nationally-ranked 1985 and 1986 teams that went a combined 12-3-3. Reid, who also worked three years for Jostens, Inc., graduated from Azusa Pacific in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in marketing. In 2001 he earned his master's degree in education from Azusa Pacific. Before coming to Azusa Pacific, Reid competed at Yuba College in Marysville, Calif., and prepped at Carson City (Nev.) High School, from which he graduated in 1983. His younger sister Kim Reid-Schmidt and brother Jim both competed on the Cougar track & field team during the 1990s. His nephew, Corey, is a top high school decathlete (6700 pts, 47.40 400m!). Kevin, 46, and his wife Stacey, a 1992 Azusa Pacific alum, live in Pomona, Calif., with their sons Jonathan (17) and Zachary (12).
