Buhlmann (SREL), and Jeff Camper (Francis Marion University) DESCRIPTION Taxonomy and Basic Descriptions This guild contains 4 primary species: the flatwoods salamander, Carolina gopher frog, dwarf siren, and tiger salamander; and 2 secondary species: upland chorus frog and northern cricket frog. Primary species are high priority species that are directly tied to a unifying feature or habitat. Secondary species are priority species that may occur in, or be related to, the unifying feature at some time in their life. The flatwoods salamander—in particular, the frosted flatwoods salamander— and tiger salamander are members of the family Ambystomatidae, the mole salamanders. Both species are large; the tiger salamander is the largest terrestrial salamander in the eastern United States. The Photo by SC DNR flatwoods salamander can reach lengths of 9 to 12 cm (3.5 to 4.7 in.) as an adult. This species is dark, ranging from black to dark brown with silver-white reticulated markings (Conant and Collins 1991; Martof et al. 1980). The tiger salamander can reach lengths of 18 to 20 cm (7.1 to 7.9 in.) as an adult; maximum size is approximately 30 cm (11.8 in.). -

Haas1 Abstract - Ephemeral wetlands surrounded by Pinus palustris (Longleaf Pine) flatwoods support diverse herpetofaunal communities and provide important breeding habitat for many species. We sampled herpetofauna in 3 pine flatwoods wetlands on Eglin Air Force Base, Okaloosa County, FL, over 2 time periods (1 wetland [1] from 1993 to1995 and 2 wetlands [2 and 3] from 2010 to 2015) using drift fences that completely encircled each wetland. We documented 37, 46, and 43 species of amphibians and reptiles at wetlands 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Herpetofaunal communities were remarkably similar across all 3 wetlands (Sorenson Index values > 0.97) despite sampling that occurred 15–20 years apart on wetlands located approximately 10 km apart. Ambystoma bishopi (Reticulated Flat- woods Salamander), Pseudacris ornata (Ornate Chorus Frog), and Eurycea quadridigitata (Dwarf Salamander), all species of conservation concern, were captured at all 3 wetlands, indicating that these wetlands provide habitat for specialist species. Overall, habitat con- servation and management has succeeded in maintaining suitable habitat for herpetofauna in recently surveyed wetlands, despite continued range-wide threats from changes to his- toric fire regimes and climate change. Georgia Blind Salamander Biological Status Review Report March 31, 2011 FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION 620 South Meridian Street Tallahassee, Florida 32399-1600 Biological Status Review for the Georgia Blind Salamander (Eurycea wallacei) March 31, 2011 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) directed staff to evaluate all species listed as Endangered, Threatened or Species of Special Concern as of November 8, 2010 that had not undergone a status review in the past decade. Public information on the status of the Florida population of the Georgia blind salamander was sought from September 17 through November 1, 2010. A five-member Biological Review Group (BRG) met on November 9-10, 2010. Group members were Bill Turner (FWC lead), Ryan Means (Coastal Plains Institute), Kelly Jones (Virginia Tech), John Himes (FWC), and Paul Moler (independent consultant) (Appendix 1). In accordance with rule 68A-27.0012, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.), the BRG was charged with evaluating the biological status of the Georgia blind salamander using criteria included in definitions in 68A-27.001, F.A.C., and following protocols in the Guidelines for Application of the IUCN Red List Criteria at Regional Levels (Version 3.0) and Guidelines for Using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (Version 8.1). Ozier9, and Alan Cressler10 Abstract We provide an annotated checklist of species recorded from caves and other subterranean habitats in the state of Georgia, USA. We report 281 species (228 invertebrates and 53 vertebrates), including 51 troglobionts (cave-obligate species), from more than 150 sites (caves, springs, and wells). Endemism is high; of the troglobionts, 17 (33 % of those known from the state) are endemic to Georgia and seven (14 %) are known from a single cave. We identified three biogeographic clusters of troglobionts. Two clusters are located in the northwestern part of the state, west of Lookout Mountain in Lookout Valley and east of Lookout Mountain in the Valley and Ridge. In addition, there is a group of tro- globionts found only in the southwestern corner of the state and associated with the Upper Floridan Aquifer. At least two dozen potentially undescribed species have been collected from caves; clarifying the taxonomic status of these organisms would improve our understanding of cave biodiversity in the state. -

Int. J. Speleol. 5 (1973), pp. 15-19. Feeding Efficiency in the Cave Salamander Haideotriton wallacei by STEWART B. PECK* INTRODUCTION Cave adapted animals often exhibit bizarre morphologies. A question of interest to students of evolu1ionary biology concerns the selective pressures which have led to these morphologi~al modifications. It is assumed from the frequency of conver- gence of "cave modifications" that they have an adaptive value for cave life. Poulson (1964) and Mitchell (1969) discuss the hypothesis and the literature that scarcity of food in caves may act as a forceful selective agent. The selection favors increased feeding and metabolic efficiency. The morphological changes result from this selection. Among the vertebrates, the American Amblyopsid cave fishes have been investi- gated (Poulson, 1963) and show increasing feeding and metabolic efficiency in conjunction with increased morphological specialization. There exists an even richer array of cave salamander species. Little has been reported on them beyond their morphology and raxonomy (Poulson, 1964). However, they present many oppor- tunities to investigate several aspects of the physiology and ecology of cave adaption and evolution. Brandon (1971) has reviewed aspects of morphological modification of North American troglobitic salamanders. Lee (1969) has reported on the feeding habits of the Georgia Blind Salamander, Haideotriton wallucei Carr. I would like to supplement his findings and to report an additional interpretation of the results. METHODS In September, 1968, eight specimens (20-26 mm snout to vent length) of H. wallacei were cap1ured in Gerard's Cave, Jackson County, Florida. The specimens were killed within one hour of capture in Chloretone, fixed for ] 2 hours in 4% formalin, and pre~;erved in 70% ethyl alcohol. -
