  • Interrogating Godfathers
Journal of Sustainable Development in Africa (Volume 19, No.4, 2017) ISSN: 1520-5509 Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Clarion, Pennsylvania INTERROGATING GODFATHERS – ELECTORAL CORRUPTION NEXUS AS A CHALLENGE TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND NATIONAL SECURITY IN FOURTH REPUBLIC NIGERIA 1Preye kuro Inokoba and 2Chibuzor Chile Nwobueze 1Department of Political Science, Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State, Nigeria 2Department Of History & Diplomatic Studies, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt ABSTRACT In all modern democracies, election is not only an instrument for selecting political officeholders but also a vital platform for ensuring government legitimacy, accountability and mobilization of the citizenry for political participation. However, elections in Nigeria since independence have been bedeviled by electoral corruption characterized by such vices as election rigging, snatching of electoral materials, result falsification, political intimidation and assassination before, during and after elections. This situation has often brought unpopular governments to power, with resultant legitimacy crisis, breakdown of law and order and general threat to security. The paper, in explaining the adverse effects of electoral fraud and violence on sustainable development and national security, identified political godfathers as the main orchestrators, masterminds and beneficiaries of electoral corruption in Nigeria. Through the application of the descriptive method of data analysis, the study investigates how godfathers, in a bid to achieve their inordinate political and pecuniary interests, flout all known electoral laws, subvert democratic institutions and governance and as a result threaten national development and security. The paper therefore concludes that, to effectively address the undemocratic practice of electoral corruption, which is a threat to sustainable development and national security, there is need for the strengthening of the legal framework and democratic structures in Nigeria.

It is argued that ethnicity is not necessarily incompatible with nationalism and nation-building. Ethnicity and nationalism both play a role in nation-state formation. They are each functional to political stability and, therefore, to civil peace and to the ability of individual Nigerians to pursue their non-political goals. Ethnicity is functional to political stability because it provides the basis for political socialization and for popular allegiance to political actors. It provides the framework within which patronage is institutionalized and related to traditional forms of welfare within a state which is itself unable to provide such benefits to its subjects.

  • Regressive Democracy: the Monstrous Role of Godfatherism in Nigeria
International Journal of Politics and Good Governance Volume VI, No. 6.2 Quarter II 2015 ISSN: 0976 – 1195 REGRESSIVE DEMOCRACY: THE MONSTROUS ROLE OF GODFATHERISM IN NIGERIA Francis Osadebamwen Osayi University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria ABSTARCT Godfatherism has become an attribute of modern day Nigeria democracy. With the gradual institutionalization of democracy, godfatherism has taken its toll in the politics of the country, thereby causing disaffection, disharmony, disunity and conflict among various political and interest groups. Its lethargic impact has further heightened political passivism and aparthism, thus retarding Nigeria’s democratic process. Apart from being a game of power play and rivalry, it often engenders political acrimony which tends to divest the people of democratic dividends. Consequently, such features as stagnated development, wanton destruction of lives and property becomes predominant. Nigeria has consistently been rated as one of the most corrupt nations on earth. This corrupt tendency propelled by greed has resulted in Nigerians seeing government as a vehicle for primitive accumulation and self aggrandizement. With these attendant problems associated with politics of godfatherism, Nigeria’s socio-economic structure tends to encourage it. However, the third and fourth dispensations (2007-2014) of this fourth republic have witnessed tremendous change in role from ‘do or die’ style of godfatherism to that of intra party politics. It is this change pattern that necessitated this study. Key Words: Democracy, Godfatherism, Paternalism, Political Conflict, Personal Interest, Clientelism Introduction It is an undeniable fact in Nigeria history that godfatherism has been a major setback in the country’s democratic experience. The drawbacks, political passivism and aparthism witnessed across Nigeria today are traceable largely to the activities of godfatherism in the 1 International Journal of Politics and Good Governance Volume VI, No.

Okon Senior Lecturer Department of Religious and Cultural Studies University of Calabar Calabar, Nigeria Email: [email protected] Phone: +2348038025231 ABSTRACT This paper examines critically the religious dimension of political decisions and policies in the Babangida era. It is obvious that religion was manipulated in the Babangida era as a major influence and determinant of public policy. The negative impact of the manipulation of religion for political purposes is still lingering in the horizon. Religion was not only bastardized, but was reasonably politicized and contaminated. Babangida used religion to obtain legitimacy and consolidate his grip on political power. KEYWORDS: Religion, Islam, politics, Nigeria, Babangida INTRODUCTION Religion is an indispensable factor in nation building. Historically, Christianity and Islam have contributed immensely to the socio-political development of Nigeria. Both religions, at one time and another have acted as harbingers of civilization and “… the fountain of morality in our social evolution” (Kalu, 1980:317, 318). Though exotic, from the point of view of origin, Islam and Christianity have so permeated the Nigerian culture and society, that they have unconsciously assumed the status of an indigenous faith in some communities. That is true of Islam in northern Nigeria and Christianity in the south. Majority of Nigerian people see themselves either as Christians or Muslims. An insignificant proportion identifies themselves as votaries of traditional religions.
