The Speedway Researcher Promoting Research into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing Volume 16 No.3 December 2013 Edition No. 63 Star Championship Trophy Competition 1935 Early in 1935 the National Speedway Association the body representing the promoters of the sport elected a small committee to try and evolve a satisfactory method of finding a Speedway champion. The committee comprised of Mr Cecil L Smith (The joint managing director of New Cross), Mr Norman H Pritchard (The Manager of Wimbledon) and Mr J Harrison (Speedway Correspondent of The Star Newspaper). Preliminary Rounds The Star Championship committee selected who they considered to be the best 24 riders and it was agreed that a Preliminary Round was to be held on every National League track except for Wembley which was to be the venue for the Star Final. The names of the riders were put into a draw with each one racing on four of the six available tracks. Each round had a sixteen rider field raced over the 20 heat format. After 20 outings each the sixteen riders out of the original twenty four who had the highest scores were the qualifiers for the Star Final. In the Preliminary rounds the scoring was on a 3-2-1-0 basis with each man having 5 rides. The prize money for each round was:- 25 shillings per point The winner took home a bronze star and £20 Second place £10 Third place £5 In addition to this the National Speedway Association presented three prizes to the riders with the highest aggregate scores in the Preliminary rounds. -

We would just like to add our sincere condolences to Lee’s wife and children and to his family and friends. Editors Speedway in Australia 1926 In 1926 Lionel Wills visited Australia and his thoughts on speedway in Australia was published in The Motor Cycle on November 25th of that year. We now reproduce that article. “Motor racing,” an Australian daily paper remarked recently, “has definitely become one of the major sports of Sydney.” In Australia, in other words, a motor race meeting often draws as big a crowd as does a football match, and the time is obviously approaching when it will rival horse racing, the Australians’ favourite pastime. Now even with the increasing popularity of the T.T. races, the same cannot be said of England, and it may therefore interest home readers to hear how it is done on the other side of the world. In cinder-track racing Australia has discovered a type of event which is as thrilling as the “T.T.,” and even more spectacular than sand-racing; in addition, it requires a not very great outlay of capital, and the track is easily accessible from the big city. Ten minutes on a tram, fact brings Sydney to the Speedway Royal, which is simply, a broad unbanked cinder track constructed round a football oval. Australian football is played on an oval field, and the track round it is about one-third of a mile, with huge stands all round, having accommodation for thousands of people. -

Don Gray, Old Orchard, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, CB5 9JU, Telephone: 01223 862279 has posed the question above and set out to answer it in the following article. On becoming aware that I saw my first speedway meeting on Easter Monday 1930, many acquaintances ask, who, in my opinion, was the best rider in the pre-war era? A most difficult question to answer. A number of criteria present themselves from which to reach an opinion and they are viewed from different perspectives by various enthusiasts, many of whom, I might suggest, are biased towards their own particular favourites. I must concentrate on the thirties and ignore the overseas pioneers of the late 1920s when Frank Arthur and Vic Huxley reigned supreme over the inexperienced emergent British riders and when those spectacular showmen like Billy Lamont and Sprouts Elder enthralled a curious and excited public. I choose to ignore the one track specialists who performed brilliantly on their own circuits but indifferently when visiting other tracks. I put men like Jack Barnett and Phil Bishop at High Beech, the Australian Jack Bishop at Exeter, Arthur Jervis at Leicester Super and Len Parker at Bristol. Unlike the modern era, the pre-war decade was notable for the number of riders who experienced purple patches of form and dominated their peer for a few weeks, only to recede back to the category of “good” rather than “outstanding”. -
