Alexandria falls in first and only playoff game

By Derrick Perkins

Alexandria Aces head coach Corey Haines saw the ballclub make history in his final game at the team’s helm: compete in the franchise’s first-ever playoff matchup. Though the Aces fell to the Bethesda Big Train 3-2, it’s hard for Haines to walk away from the Cal Ripken Colle- giate Baseball League without a sense of pride. “I loved doing it,” he said. “It was a lot of fun, meeting other kids from across the country [and] getting those guys to bond with each other … into one team.” Haines returned to the team photo/Mark Briscoe You’re InvIted to the Encore’s 1st Annual after a tough but promising Alexandria Aces coach Corey Haines, center, looks on as his team first year in 2011. On Monday morning, area journalists awoke to a press release in their inboxes from Independent candidate for mayor Andrew Macdonald. It was titled “Macdonald chal- lenges Mayor [Bill] Euille to two debate[s]” and was just in time for the daily news cycle. “Jerry Warner, a campaign manager for Andrew Macdonald, extended an invitation to the Euille campaign last week,” the release stated. “He said that he had finally received a polite but noncommittal response from the mayor’s representatives.” The Macdonald campaign has no moderator, sponsor or venue. They have some “in mind,” according to the state- ment, but nothing concrete. Yet the press release proceeded to reproach Mayor Euille for holding off on accepting the invitation — to a nonexistent debate. On the other side of the coin, the Times spoke with Mayor Euille about the release, and he confirmed his non- committal response, citing potential scheduling conflicts. But why not accept the challenge first and work around any scheduling issues later? The mayoral race is off on the wrong foot. In a presi- dential election season where a polarized national con- sciousness is crosshatched by embellished, negative ads, Alexandria is no place for an Independent challenger and Democratic incumbent to embark in a spitting contest. In traditional politics, incumbents have everything to lose and nothing to gain by engaging with their opponent. Alexandria politics need not be traditional. Mayor Euille could have diffused Mr. Macdonald’s Your Views obvious attempt at picking a fight if he agreed in principle — if not in particulars — to debate his challenger.
