Such places offer up a low, straight horizon that is, alongside Esser’s signature coloring, one of the most striking details of the resulting image. His most recent series May 2017 presents landscapes and places on the Lebanon coast: En Naqora, 9783829607971 | £45.00 Saida, Enfeh; along the river Nile in Egypt: Aswan, Luxor, Salwa Bahry, Hardback | 180pp | 280 x 320 mm El Quarwad; and Israel: Sea of Galilee, Akko. As in his previous series 100 col & b/w ills taken in Italy and France, his photographs pay tribute to the universal Rights: UK & Eire only. lure of a seemingly infinite horizon and ultimate calm in the foreground. Elger Esser, born in Stuttgart in 1967, grew up in Rome and studied with Bernd Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He has exhibited internationally, including New York, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Munich. 6 JOHN RULE Spring 2017 PHOTOGRAPHY Giovanni Gastel Germano Celant Giovanni Gastel, by Germano Celant, presents the creative path of the Milanese photographer through the intertwining of his professional and biographical events, by making reference to the international fashion scene and its complex communication system as well. The ‘imaginary’ journey that Gastel has developed through magazines – from Vogue Italia to Harper’s Bazaar – advertisement campaigns – from Dior to Guerlain – exhibitions – from Gastel per Donna to Maschere e Spettri – is displayed through the reconstruction of forty years of experimental and commissioned work, in which ‘serial’ ensembles and individual products highlight the features of his storytelling, his unique use of light and of the comparison between people and objects. The goal is to document his March 2017 operating method, based on the analysis and presentation of a subject in 9788836634989 | £38.00 series: still life, portrait, and research and fashion shot.
