The life member qual- ified as a phys ed teacher in 1991 but as he put it, “football got in the way”. Now, he has finally found his way into teaching, except his classroom is a football oval and his school is the West Australian Female Football Academy. The academy is the brainchild of Turn- bull and his former teammate and fellow Eagles life member Chad Morrison, and was created by the pair after they realised while there were plenty of talent programs and elite pathways available to up-and- coming male footballers, there was a gap in the market for females. The academy runs clinics, programs and one-on-one training to develop football knowledge and ability at all levels of the game, from would-be AFLW stars to older players keen to step back into footy. “A lot of these girls haven’t had the years and years of football background, so they’re trying to fast-track it,” Turnbull said. “We just try and break it down, not just the skill side of it but the tactical side as well so they get an understanding. The gap Turnbull and Morrison are try- ing to bridge is not just a technical and tac- tical one, but an injury-prevention one. “You have all these type of girls, but then you’ve got the ones that are stepping into footy as well, not necessarily have done Auskick, but are stepping in now as a 12, 13 year-old and are really keen to get in there, but just need that grounding,” Turnbull said. “In many cases, some of these girls are coming from non-contact sports, so we want to make sure they’re prepared and set their body up.” The academy’s next clinic in the October school holidays is at West Coast’s home of Mineral Resources Park and will feature AFLW players Dana Hooker, Parris Laurie and Sophie McDonald as well as ex-Eagles Fraser McInness and Jacob Brennan. Brandon Starcevich, who grew up in WA, started play- ing with Mt Lawley-Ingle- wood Junior Football Club before joining WAFL club East Perth. The 21-year-old running defender is the Round 13 NAB AFL Ris- ing Star nominee. “It was pretty nice to get some recognition for the efforts put in over the years so that was a good feeling,” Starcevich said. Mt Lawley-Inglewood Junior Football Club will receive an NAB Club Recog- nition Award, which is $2500 worth of financial and prac- tical resources, due to Star- cevich’s nomination. Starcevish was drafted as a midfielder but said he has enjoyed playing a key role in defence. “It was the start of last year when (coach Chris Fagan) mentioned he might try me down off half back,” he said. “It was hard at first, but I got it accustomed to it pretty easily in the end.’’ After playing five games in his first two seasons at the Lions, the defender has played every game in 2020.
