She is married with three children, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Over the years, she has enjoyed quilting, gardening and hiking/backpacking. She loves to travel and has espe- cially fond memories of France and England, where some of her family resides. She also loves birds and nature. She has had a lot of fun and engaged in much laughter during this project, which brought back wonderful memories of days when she used to ski.

Ms. February - Betty Edwards was born in Colorado. While growing up, she loved horses and rode them every chance she got. After she moved to the Northwest, she cultivated new interests which included hiking, fishing and playing golf.

Mr. March - Bob Schutzer was born in New Jersey and raised in Florida. He worked in the shipyards in New Jersey during World War II and has two children, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Bob enjoys walking, reading, poker and puzzles.

Ms. April - Esther Stotik was born and raised in Arkansas where the nearest town had a population of 92. She attended nursing school and made a momentous decision to go to Papua New Guinea with her husband and four children, where she served as a missionary nurse. Twenty-five years later, she returned to the USA. She loved her life and the Enga people. It was a wonderful life filled with hard work, constant learning, new ideas, appreciation of differences, excitement, adventure, travel and service.

Mr. May - Bill White is a retired actuary, 80 years young, who moved to Courtyard at Mt. Tabor a year ago. Initially Bill was very weak from battling three different cancers over three years. He had to discontinue the chemotherapy that was helping forestall the inevitable return of his latest nemesis, bone marrow cancer. His remission would be shorter, so he devised a plan to get into shape and enjoy the rest of his life to the fullest. Like the great mountain climbers who had reached the great peaks of the world, he would climb the peaks of Portland (, , Council Crest and others.) To date, he has bagged four buttes, three mounts, a ridge and a crest. He is enjoying life better and more deeply than ever.

Ms. June - Ruth Nelle Waldroff was born in Nebraska, then lived on a homestead in Wyoming during WW1. Their family moved fre- quently and Ruth Nelle attended 10 grade schools and three high schools. She went to welding school after Pearl Harbor, eventually working at the Oregon Shipyards as a pipe welder. At 20 years old, she enlisted into the Marine Corp. She married her boss on her fur- lough and was discharged when she became pregnant. She went on to become an Accountant/Bookkeeper for 40 years and enjoyed doing volunteer work for 10 years.

Ms. June 2 - Joann Davis is a young 85. She was married 44 years and had two children. She worked in the school’s food service depart- ment. She moved to Portland to live near her son and his family. She loves living at Courtyard.

Ms. July - Arlene Stricker is a mother and great, great grandmother. Arlene loves doing so many things that it is difficult to choose a favorite. But, her love of the forest and backpacking is probably at the top of her list. She currently enjoys gardening, socializing, paint- ing, tiling, interior decorating and sewing. In the past, she enjoyed stained glass and woodworking. She has been an Elks Lodge officer, Lions Club member and continues to be an avid non-processed food consumer. The thing that means the most to Arlene is having friends and family to share life’s moments with.

Ms. August - Joan Molfino Leonard was born, then raised, in San Francisco until she was 18 years old. She married Carl. They were both descended from 49’ers, Joan’s family from Italy and Carl’s family from Germany. Joan’s family originally settled in Jackson. She has two children, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Joan’s family moved 18 times in 22 years as her husband, Carl, was a career Coast Guard officer. She spent two years in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Joan and her husband retired in Stockton, California. Her family spent the next 40 years there. Ms. September - Sandra Wagenius is a daring senior with five children, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren who keep her moving, happy and healthy. One of the most daring things she has done is ZIP LINING through the forests of Ketchikan in celebration of her 78th birthday. Ms. October - Crystal Lockyear is a 89 year young Oregonian. She was born in Oregon City, moved to Portland at age 11, and graduated from Franklin High School. She has one son, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Crystal spent 40 years in the ‘Banking World’. She enjoys singing in the church choir, has an interest in Astrology and loves to read. She has, in fact, been leading the Book Club at Courtyard for a few years now. Mr. October - Bob Garvin was born in 1923 on a farm in Indiana. His family raised chickens and hogs. He served three years in the Army Infantry, then married and had two children. Bob and his wife enjoyed snowbirding in Tuscon, Arizona where he played guitar in a country western band for 23 years. He has enjoyed wood carving and has traveled across the United States six times. Ms. November - Ruth Clement moved here about four years ago from North Carolina. Her family lives here in Portland and help to ‘keep her going’. She is very happy living here at Courtyard. Ms. December - Serena Wall is a native Chicagoan and a retired 3rd grade teacher. She loves quilting, hiking and is a national park enthusi- ast. 2015 2017
