Canales, USA determined dedication to the well being of our fantastic UANA athletes [email protected] for they are the main reason why we volunteer to serve. It seems as if we just left Guadalajara yesterday, filled with ideas and energy when we Vice Presidente • Vice President Errol Clarke, BAR embarked on this magnificent UANA journey of 2011-2015. [email protected] Don Orban and Don Julio I have known since I was a child, and our dear Mrs. Carol Zaleski was kind enough to teach me the course of UANA's Miembro • Member Executive Committee affairs when she took me as her understudy 13 years ago. Godfrey, CAN [email protected] UANA is grateful to Dr. Maglione for providing leadership within PASO in avoiding a conflict between the Pan American Games and the FINA World International Relations Officer Dr. Margo Mountjoy, CAN Championships; for expanding the quota of athletes for Toronto 2015 and [email protected] for considering an even larger quota as we stride into Lima 2019. Eggert, USA The UANA Executive thanks President Coaracy Nunes Filho and Miss [email protected] Giovana Moreira for their leadership and strength during the last four years. Giovana is our shining star and has earned * Carol Zaleski, USA Dr. Julio Maglione, URU everyone's admiration and respect as she has managed the intricate web * Dr. Manuel de Jesús, PUR of UANA life with grace and abundant patience. * Honorary Life President Honorary UANA President Eldon Godfrey guided us through many passages along the ODEPA, UANA. FINA and ACODEPA world; we greatly appreciate Eldon's wisdom and his kindness in leadership. We could not be more grateful for his valuable contributions and for the positive spirit he brings into the tasks at hand. Thank you for guiding us as we approached the 1st PASO Festival which brought our Continent together in Mexico for another glorious and very successful celebration of sport. A special tribute goes to Mr. Mel Goldstein for organizing two fantastic Masters events in Sarasota and Medellin. These events were well attended and provided for an efficient and friendly competition for our athletes. They created new branding opportunities for UANA as well as a new and significant source of revenue. These new sources of revenue ultimately provide much needed funds which allow us to perform our duties more efficiently. Mel's willingness to wear multiple hats and serve as UANA's financial manager, engaged him in the daily fiscal responsibilities of UANA and in turn assured the financial wellbeing of our organization. Mel your work is greatly appreciated and we hope you continue to work with UANA for many years to come. We must offer a Continental Thank You to United States Aquatic Sports Presidents Mr. Jim Wood and Mr. Steve McFarland, Confederacao Brasileira de Deportes Acuaticos President Coaracy Nunes Filho and Aquatics Canada President Mrs. Lisa Schott, for providing tremendous financial support in hosting our last four UANA Executive meetings and for sponsoring our UANA receptions in Barcelona, Doha and Toronto. We thank you for your willingness to work together for the benefit of all our UANA athletes. A special thank you goes to their respective Swimming Technical Directors, Mr. Frank Busch, Mr. Ricardo de Moura and Mr. Pierre LaFontaine, for agreeing to shrink the size of the National Teams at the Pan American Games in order to see larger participation and diversity from other UANA countries. Grand congratulations and enormous thank you goes to the Chairs of our UANA Technical Committees as well as to all the ITO's who will be working in Toronto, for their arduous and continuous work on behalf of our athletes. They have committed four years of their lives, many times sacrificing by being away from their families, for the success of aquatics in our continent. Their dedication and attention to detail distinguishes them as the finest leaders in the world for their distinctive aquatic disciplines. Thank you to all our National Federations and their volunteers for working diligently in favor of our athletes. In particular, we thank those National Federations that have hosted UANA events during the quadrennial and we encourage you to find new, innovative and exciting opportunities to host UANA Championships for many years to come. Affiliated to UANA is grateful to Mr. Greg Eggert and Dr. Margo Mountjoy for their fine work as Media and International Relations Officers. You are great ambassadors for UANA in the international arena and your quality of work is respected by all. More importantly, you provide expert advice and guidance in all matters related to our world of aquatics. You also keep us well informed on all relevant aquatic matters across the world of sports. Let us congratulate and thank our distinguished Technical Delegates as they prepare to guide us during these Pan American Games. They are: Ms. Rose Cody - Synchronized Swimming Mr. Roberto Cabral - Water Polo Mr. Denny Ryther - Open Water Swimming Mrs. Kathy Seaman - Diving Mr. Bill Hogan - Swimming A special note of thanks goes to Mrs. Kathy Parker and Mrs. Brenda Adams who serve each of us from the UANA Office in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Kathy and Brenda play an important administrative role in the call for Nominations of Officials, Congress Delegates, Members of Technical Officials and in the organization of the documents that will be available at our July 13th Congress. Kathy will be in Toronto to register each of the UANA Delegates just as she did in Guadalajara in 2011. We are quite fortunate to enjoy the enthusiasm, expertise and the patience of both Brenda and Kathy. In addition I thank Miss Laurette Longmire, USAS Secretary for her guidance in dealing with many UANA affairs. USA Swimming's Mr. Mike Unger and Mr. Larry Herr, have spent countless hours of their expertise in developing the 2015 Pan American Games On Line Meet Entry Procedure, thus providing the most accurate, user friendly, fair, All-UANA best data and entry method system for swimming ever used during the Pan American Games. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Our FINA Vice President for the Americas, Mr. Dale Neuburger, has continued to lead with passion, dignity and a wealth of knowledge during the last four years. Dale has promoted the development of our officials, coaches and athletes, always finding new educational programs, clinics and financial resources for the benefit of all our UANA National Federations large or small. As the Director of the FINA Development Program Dale has expanded and spread the opportunities made available to our National Federations during the quadrennial so that they reached all the corners of our Continent. We thank you Dale for always taking the high road with your humble leadership style and for being a dedicated friend to all UANA members. In June 2017, the International Olympic Committee reinforced this reward, confirming aquatics will have the highest number of medals (49) of any sport at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. We have experienced 3 successful editions of the FINA World Championships – in Barcelona (2013), Kazan (2015) and Budapest (2017) – and our top-level annual events for each discipline have grown. Success at the top end of our sport has enabled FINA to invest at record levels in aquatic sports worldwide. In 2018, we have an excellent starting point to build on recent successes: to pursue our mission of increasing participation in aquatic sports and our vision to enable everyone in the world to swim. This Strategic Plan sets the framework as to how FINA will accomplish this. The FINA Strategic Plan 2018 – 2021 will be underpinned by 4 pillars: 1. Raising Standards 2. Accelerating Potential 3. Uniting Passions 4. Sustaining Growth Everything FINA does between 2018 and 2021 will be focused on strengthening one of these pillars. USAS Code of Regulations & Policies Update: Secretary Longmire briefly discussed the 6 topics that will be considered by the working group. July 2nd is the deadline for NGBs to submit Code revision proposals for consideration by the working group. August 1st all Code and Policy recommendations will be distributed to the NGB Presidents/Chairmen for discussion with their respective Board of Directors. All recommended revisions will be approved at the USAS Board of Trustees meeting in September at the USAS Convention. 3. FINA World Aquatics Day: If an NGB is interested in participating, information should be sent to Laurette for submission to FINA. B. TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Boak shared financial statements and noted that USAS is in a good financial position.

    Nick Thierry Recipient of the 2013 R. Max Ritter Award Presented by United States Aquatic Sports Nick Thierry is the 2013 recipient of the R. Max Ritter Award presented posthumously and in recognition of his life-long affair with swimming. United States Aquatic Sports honors the memory of a man whose unselfish contributions including keeping the history book of swimming straight, simple and true for the benefit of athletes, coaches and also for national federations as well as the international body FINA. "Before his passing on October 2, 2012 Nick invested in the development of a database that contains 40 years of swimming rankings and statistics. That immense work is part of his legacy. When swimmers swim head to head in elite international competition, their foremost goal is to beat the opposition. Once the race is over and they glance up to the scoreboard to see their finish place, their next thought is, "My time, did I do a personal best? Was it a record?" Moments after swimmers hit the finish wall, Nick Thierry took over. Nick Thierry kept the record of the sport alive for more than four decades as the keeper of the world rankings. He was the bastion of swimming statistics and a pioneer in the art of swimming news. His guardianship of the record of athletes performances has been treasured by swimmers, coaches, sports scientists, journalists, sports institutions and swimming federations since he first started to register and chronicle all meets that produced performances worthy of a place in the top 300 across all events. Born in Hungary on December 2, 1938, Nick spent the first eight years of his life in Budapest.

    Congratulations to Eldon Godfrey Recipient of the 2011 R. Max Ritter Award Presented by United States Aquatic Sports Eldon Godfrey has been a prolific leader in aquatic sports for over 35 years. He has dedicated himself to the sport of diving as a manager, official and program developer. Eldon was instrumental in organizing the University of Calgary Diving Club in 1973, along with his wife Carlie Jean. He has served as a diving official and referee at the National and International level and has served at every Olympic Games since 1984. He was elected as a member of the FINA Bureau in 1996 and served through 2009; he is now an Honorary Member of the FINA Bureau. Eldon was elected President of UNION AMERICANA DE NATACION in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the UANA Congress held in conjunction with 2007 Pan American Games. During the four years prior to his election he served as its Secretary-Treasurer. He has served as President of the University of Calgary Diving Club, President of the Canadian Amateur Diving Association, President of the Aquatic Federation of Canada, and as a Director of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Eldon Godfrey has received numerous awards and honors including a recipient of the FINA Gold Pin in 1996 and was inducted into Canada’s Olympic Hall of Fame in 2003. In addition to receiving the 2011 Max Ritter Award, he will be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an Honor Contributor on May 12, 2012, in Fort Lauderdale. The R. TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Tom Boak distributed a Balance Sheet and USAS Consolidated Financial Statement, both as of December 31, 2016. Year-end 2016 had a $133,000 net excess which, following some additional outstanding expenses, will probably end near a $92,000 gain. Financially, USAS is in a good financial position. Tom completed a review of Convention revenue and created a better reporting format for future years. Earlier conversations had been held discussing the distribution of USAS funds – when is enough enough? Discussion centered on distributing funds back to NGBs, set money aside for UANA development or athlete development or other activities. A review will be completed after the World Championships and suggestions will be presented in September. Roughly $100K is needed to support the World Championships in any given year.

    USMS SPECIAL APPOINTMENTS & LIAISONS ANNUAL REPORTS AMATEUR SWIMMING UNION OF THE AMERICAS REPRESENTATIVE (ASUA) Jim Miller, MD Mel Goldstein This report is filed on behalf of Mel Goldstein and me who serve as the USAS representatives to Amateur Swimming Union of the Americas (ASUA). We both sit on the ASUA Masters Technical Committee. ASUA was late going forward with their plans for the 2nd Masters Pan American Championships. However, after receiving 5 different bids the Executive Committee of ASUA endorsed San Juan, Puerto Rico as the host and set the competition dates for August 31 through September 3. The Masters Technical Committee Meeting is to be conducted on August 30, which is the same as the warm-up day for the meet. ASUA rotates the presidency every 4 years to a different geographic location within the Americas and Caribbean nations. Thus, ASUA President Mr. Orban Mendoza’s term in office is coming to a close. His successor has yet to be officially announced, but we do know that the next president will come from Canada. Mr. Mendoza established the Masters Pan American Championships, as one of his legacies. Hopefully, this event will continue to expand and serve all athletes in our hemisphere as the participation expands along with the number of aquatic sports being offered. ASUA has a new President, Eldon Godfrey, from Canada. Mr. Mendoza's term was over and it was Canada's turn by the rotation system that ASUA uses. Mr. Mendoza's contributions to ASUA include the expansion of the competition schedule to include Open Water and Masters in the championship schedule.

    60 Years Ago In Swimming History Prepared by the International Swimming Hall of Fame for the UANA Congress at the XVI Pan American Games Origin of the First Pan American Games The 1st Pan American Games were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 25 February-9 March 1951. The Pan American Games' origins were at the Games of the X Olympiad in Los Angeles, United States, where officials representing the National Olympic Committees of the Americas discussed the staging of an Olympic-style regional athletic competition for the athletes of the Americas. At the Pan American Sports Conference held in 1940, it was decided to hold the 1st Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1942 and a Pan American Sports Committee was formed to govern the Games. Avery Brundage, President of the USOC and Vice-President of the IOC, was elected as the first President. However, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor brought much of the Americas into World War II, thus forcing the cancellation of the 1942 games. It was decided that Buenos Aires would still host the 1st Pan American Games, this time in 1951. Argentine President Juan Peron and his co-leader, Madam Eva Peron (addressing the Opening Ceremonies, above) were the honorary Presidents and were given a special exhibition of synchronized swimming, while Mario Negri, FINA Bureau Vice President and UANA President presided over the aquatic events, which were held at the Institute of Technical Research, Ministry of Public Works.

    Asia Swimming Federation Annual Report 2015 INTRODUCTION By completion of 2015, we are pleased to say that AASF achieved goals and took one more step ahead. The Meetings, programmes and events were organized perfectly and the highlight of this year was the 8th Asian Age Group Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. The quality of the competitions, the hospitality of the host and the presence of Federations (more than 30 countries) were remarkable and magnificent. Khalid B. Al Sabah President At the beginning of the year, the Executive Board Members gathered in Kuwait to consider the events and discuss about the important issues The year was also marked by conducting other competitions: 6th Asian Diving Cup and Asian Water Polo Championship. The level of professionalism of these events has completely improved and we observed great competitions in Malaysia and China. One of the other important meetings was the General Assembly which conducted in Kazan and on the sideline of FINA World Championships where 36 National Federations attended the meeting. These successes could not have been possible without the commitment and support from our National Federations around the Asia.
