Deadwood and the Black Hills offer a variety of transportation choices. By car – Interstate 90, which runs from Boston to Seattle, skirts the edge of the Black Hills – just 9 miles from downtown Deadwood. U.S. Highway 85 comes up from Denver and continues on into North Dakota.

By air – Nearby Rapid City Regional Airport has direct airline flights from Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Phoenix. Airlines are American Airlines, Delta, United, and Allegiant Air.

Adams Museum 54 Sherman Street, Deadwood Deadwood businessman and former mayor W.E. Adams built the Adams Museum in 1930 as a tribute to Black Hills pioneers and in memory of his deceased first wife and two daughters. It is considered the Black Hills’ oldest history museum. Artifacts on display from Deadwood’s past reflect the powerful legends of Wild Bill, Calamity Jane and Deadwood Dick. The collection includes a one-of-a-kind plesiosaur, the Thoen Stone and Potato Creek Johnny’s 7-ounce gold nugget. The Adams Bros. Bookstore is located on the first floor.

Badlands National Park 90 miles east of Deadwood on Interstate 90 The rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. Crazy Horse Memorial 53 miles south of Deadwood on U.S. Highway 385 Sculptor Korzcak Ziolkowski’s tribute to the Lakota leader is a work in progress more than 30 years after his death. It’s the world’s largest mountain carving, and the work continues through the efforts of Korzcak’s widow Ruth Ziolkowski and her children. The memorial grounds have evolved into a sweeping museum and visitor center that features the sculptor’s work and a variety of Native American arts and crafts, classrooms, educational programs and a venue for Native American artists to sell their work.

Custer State Park 73 miles south of Deadwood, via U.S. Highway 385 The 71,000-acre park in the heart of the Black Hills has been a popular destination for more than 100 years. Its herd of 1,500 free-roaming bison is rounded up each September in a spectacular stampede that attracts thousands of visitors. In addition, visitors can see deer, elk and the wild burros (who are expert pan-handlers). Fishing, camping, kayaking, horseback riding and hiking are also popular park activities. Days of ‘76 Museum 18 Seventy Six Drive, Deadwood Newly expanded, the Days of ‘76 Museum explores the rich heritage of the annual Days of ‘76 Rodeo and Celebration, the Black Hills Cowboy Culture and the rich Native American heritage of the Black Hills. Deadwood Alive/Gunslingers/ Trial of Jack McCall Main Street, Deadwood Street theater mixes with history all summer long in Deadwood. The Deadwood Alive Gunslingers – gun-toting actors – recreate the events of Deadwood’s most famous time in 1876 when Wild Bill Hickok was murdered, and his killer Jack McCall was captured on the street and put on trial. The capture occurs at 7:30 p.m. on Main Street in front of the Saloon 10, and the trial starts at 8 p.m. in the Masonic Building down the street, next to the Silverado Gaming Establishment. But the actors stay busy all afternoon. The shooting of Wild Bill is inside the Saloon 10 four times a day. The Gunslinger shootouts are three times a day at various locations on Deadwood Main Steet.

Devils Tower National Monument 77 miles west of Deadwood, via Interstate 90 and, U.S. Highway 14 and Wyo. Highway 24 This natural wonder was created millions of years ago when a spike of molten rock pushed through a weak spot in the Earth’s crust, then cooled. When the surrounding countryside eroded away, it left this 1,200-foot monolith standing above the Belle Fourche River Valley. The site is sacred to Native American tribes, and it was the United State’s first national monument. It was popularized in the 1977 film, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

Historic Adams House 22 Van Buren Street, Deadwood Built in 1892, this impressive Victorian mansion offers a glimpse into the lives of well-to-do merchants in Deadwood’s early days. Businessman W.E. Adams bought the home in 1920 and lived there until his death. Adams’ second wife Mary closed up the house in 1936, two years after W.E.’s death, leaving the contents and furnishings intact. Now owned by the city of Deadwood, the house has been restored and is open to the public. The Historic Adams House includes the Mary Adams Orientation Center with wheelchair accessible bathrooms, orientation exhibition and gift shop.

HOmestake Visitor Center 160 West Main Street, Lead For 126 years, the Homestake Mine produced gold, good-paying jobs and technical innovations. Before its closing in 2002, Homestake Gold Mine was the oldest, largest and deepest mine in the Western Hemisphere, reaching more than 8,000 feet below the town of Lead. The Homestake Visitor Center offers surface tours that explore the historic town, Homestake’s underground operations and the 1876 Open Cut. There are artifacts, an informational mining video, historic and educational memorabilia and a gift shop.

Jewel Cave National Monument 70 miles southwest of Deadwood via U.S. 385 and U.S. 14 With more than 168 miles of mapped and surveyed passages, Jewel Cave is the third- longest cave in the world. This underground wilderness offers visitors a rarely seen look at fragile formations and glimpses of brilliant color. The Discovery Tour and Scenic Tour are offered daily, year-round, except for Thanksgiving Day, December 25, and January 1st. The Historic Lantern Tour is offered the second week of June through Labor Day. The Wild Caving Tour is offered during the summer and on certain days during the off-season.

Mickelson Trail Trailhead at Sherman Street Parking Lot, Deadwood Nestled in the heart of the Black Hills lies a 109-mile trail for hikers, bikers, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and horseback riders. The limestone and gravel trail contains more than 100 converted railroad bridges and 4 rock tunnels allowing adventurists 15 different trailheads for access. MOunt Moriah Cemetery 10 Mt Moriah Drive, Deadwood Perched on a hilltop overlooking Deadwood, Mount Moriah Cemetery is the final resting place of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock and a host of lesser- known Deadwood denizens who met timely and untimely ends in Deadwood Gulch. The cemetery reflects the history of Deadwood itself, with a Chinese section, children’s section and a number of interpretive signs to help tell the story. Old Style Saloon No. 10 657 Main Street, Deadwood The Old Style Saloon No. 10 is a living museum – maybe the only one in the world with a full bar – where you can view historical Western and mining camp artifacts spanning more than 100 years. Kids are welcome until 8:30 p.m. After dark they turn on the fun for adults with live music, cold drinks, casino games and an atmosphere that recalls Deadwood’s early days. For a quieter respite, head upstairs to the Deadwood Social Club restaurant and its rooftop patio. By the way, this is the bar – but not the location – where Wild Bill Hickok was murdered in 1876. Originally named Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon 10, the bar was down the street. You can still see Wild Bill’s “death chair” above the front door.

Schade Winery 250 U.S. 14 Alt, Deadwood Authentic South Dakota-grown and -produced wine is the stock in trade at Schade Winery. The winery offers daily complimentary wine tastings. Spearfish Canyon West of Deadwood via U.S. Highway 385 to Lead, or via Interstate 90 to Spearfish The breathtaking limestone walls soar above the wooded canyon floor on this scenic 20-mile drive between Spearfish and Cheyenne Crossing. Along the way, you can see Bridal Veil Falls, Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls. A number of hiking trails take you away from the road and into the cool forest. Halfway up the canyon, the Latchstring Inn and Spearfish Canyon Lodge offer a scenic break where Little Spearfish Creek feeds into Spearfish Creek. The view is especially breathtaking in the fall, when the aspen trees turn bright yellow.

Tatanka: Story of the Bison One-mile north of Deadwood on U.S. Highway 85 Actor and director Kevin Costner, while filming “Dances With Wolves,” fell in love with Deadwood. He commissioned sculptor Peggy Detmers to create a massive bronze sculpture depicting three Native American hunters stampeding 14 bison over a cliff. The sculpture is the centerpiece of Tatanka: Story of the Bison on the north edge of Deadwood.
