Declared the World Year of Physics by the United Nations, the year provided a unique opportunity for the international physics community to reach out to the general public while celebrating the centennial of Einstein’s “miraculous year.” The year started with an international Launching Conference in Paris, France that brought together more than 500 students from around the world to interact with leading physicists. -

The physical proof of this is a large box of stationery with my return address that says (I am not making this up) “Office of the President.” If you receive a letter from me, you can check it out for yourself. But check the signature, since the 4 Washington AAS office has a JPG of my personal calligraphy. For Official Use Only. AAS Elections Final Slate As incoming President, I got to sit at the left hand of NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe during lunch before his presentation at the Denver meeting. He had a little trouble with the vacuum seal on the coffee 6 pot, and there were no dexterous robots at the table, so I used my human ingenuity to hold the top Committee News firmly while rotating the coffee pot clockwise with the handle. Exactly like opening a bottle of champagne: hold the cork and rotate the bottle. But not as much fun. 7 International Travel O’Keefe’s speech was quite passionate and made it very clear that he does not want to send astronauts Grant Application to refurbish the Hubble Space Telescope. The preliminary report from the NRC Committee headed by Louis Lanzerotti, and including astronomers Sandy Faber, Riccardo Giacconni, and Joe Taylor gives another perspective, and is well worth reading (http://books.nap.edu/catalog/11051.html). -

Sarah Hreha +1 (203) 432-6231 [email protected] Online Newsroom: www.gruber.yale.edu/news-media SANDRA FABER RECEIVES $500,000 GRUBER COSMOLOGY PRIZE FOR CAREER ACHIEVEMENTS Sandra Faber May 17, 2017, New Haven, CT – The 2017 Gruber Foundation Cosmology Prize recognizes Sandra M. Faber for a body of work that has helped establish many of the foundational principles underlying the modern understanding of the universe on the largest scales. The citation praises Faber for “her groundbreaking studies of the structure, dynamics, and evolution of galaxies.” That work has led to the widespread acceptance of the need to study dark matter, to an appreciation of the inextricable relationship between the presence of dark matter and the formation of galaxies, and to the recognition that black holes reside at the heart of most large galaxies. She has also made significant contributions to the innovations in telescope technology that have revolutionized modern astronomy. Through these myriad achievements, the Gruber citation adds, Faber has “aided and inspired the work of astronomers and cosmologists worldwide.” Faber will receive the $500,000 award as well as a gold medal at a ceremony this fall. Less than a hundred years ago, astronomers were still debating whether our Milky Way Galaxy was the entirety of the universe or if other galaxies existed beyond our own. Today astronomers estimate the number of galaxies within the visible universe at somewhere between 200 billion and 2 trillion. For more than four decades Faber—now Professor Emerita at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Astronomer Emerita of the University of California Observatories—has served as a pivotal figure in leading and guiding the exploration of this unimaginably vast virgin scientific territory. -

A New Universe to Discover A Guide to Careers in Astronomy Published by The American Astronomical Society What are Astronomy and Astrophysics? Ever since Galileo first turned his new-fangled one-inch “spyglass” on the moon in 1609, the popular image of the astronomer has been someone who peers through a telescope at the night sky. But astronomers virtually never put eye to lens these days. The main source of astronomical data is still photons (particles of light) from space, but the tools used to gather and analyze them are now so sophisticated that it’s no longer necessary (or even possible, in most cases) for a human eye to look through them. But for all the high-tech gadgetry, the 21st-Century astronomer is still trying to answer the same fundamental questions that puzzled Galileo: How does the universe work, and where did it come from? Webster’s dictionary defines “astronomy” as “the science that deals with the material universe beyond the earth’s atmosphere.” This definition is broad enough to include great theoretical physicists like Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking as well as astronomers like Copernicus, Johanes Kepler, Fred Hoyle, Edwin Hubble, Carl Sagan, Vera Rubin, and Margaret Burbidge. In fact, the words “astronomy” and “astrophysics” are pretty much interchangeable these days. Whatever you call them, astronomers seek the answers to many fascinating and fundamental questions. Among them: *Is there life beyond earth? *How did the sun and the planets form? *How old are the stars? *What exactly are dark matter and dark energy? *How did the Universe begin, and how will it end? Astronomy is a physical (non-biological) science, like physics and chemistry. -

MANALI KALLAT VAINU BAPPU Elected Fellow 1968 MANALIKALLAT VAINU BAPPUwas born on August 10, 1927 in Madras. Mrs Surlanna Bappu, his mother, who hailed from Tellichery, had lost her own mother at an early age. She was 'brought up by her maternal aunt, Mrs Govindan. It was at her place, in Vepery, Madras, that Vainu was born. Vainu Bappu's ancestors hailed from Cannano re. His grandfather was the noted Malayalam author, Bappu Gurikkal; several members of his family had left their ancestral home and settled in Mangalore and nearby places. Vainu's father Manali Kakuzhi Bappu, had joined Nizanliah Observatory and settleb down in Begumpet, Hyderabad. He got married to Sunanna in 1925 ; Vainu, their only child, was born two years later. Vainu.'~early years were spent in Hyderabad. He first joined St. Anne's Convent and later Islamiah High School, Hyderabad. His gift of oratory and writing from a very early age evoked widespread admiration among his teachers. , Vainu apparently inherited this quality from his parents. His mother's elder brother, Rao Bahadur U Shankunny was a famous litterateur and orator ; another brother U Balakrishnan, a headmaster, was known for years to have cultivated'the love of reading in his students. This special qualitykf Vainu -was also fostered by his teacher in Hyderabad, Mr P G P Nair, who encouraged him to take a leading role in the debating and literary activities of the school. Vainu Bappu joined Nizam's College in 1942. He was then below the age limit for admission to the college and a special exemption had to be sought.
