MATCH BACKGROUND CSKA aim to lift city jinx The UEFA Cup semi-final between PFC CSKA Moskva and Parma FC will be their second meeting in three seasons. The two sides met in the first round of the 2002/03 UEFA Cup with Parma prevailing courtesy of a last-minute goal in the second leg to win 4-3 on aggregate.

The first leg at Ramenskoye ended 1-1 after ’s 53rd-minute strike for Parma was cancelled out by Denis Popov midway through the second half. CSKA fell behind in the return leg when Adriano scored after eight minutes, but two goals from Sergei Semak in the 37th and 43rd minutes put the Russian side firmly in control. However Mutu equalised after 66 minutes, and then deprived CSKA, who were ahead in the tie on the away goals rule, with a 90th-minute winner.

Until now that game had been Parma’s only previous meeting with either Russian or former Soviet Union opposition, over a 111 European match period which has seen the Italian club win the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1993 and the UEFA Cup in 1995 and 1999.

Having qualified from the group stage in third place in Group B and with a negative goal difference, Parma have been unbeaten in the knockout stages, accumulating two wins and four draws in three closely fought ties where they have scored just four goals but conceded only one.

Extra-time was required to overcome German side VfB Stuttgart in the first knockout round after no goals had been scored in either leg. Strikes from Marco Marchionni and Andrea Pisanu settled the tie in Parma’s favour. Giuseppe Cardone scored the only goal of the tie in the next round against Sevilla FC, and Pisanu then collected another crucial goal in the first leg of the quarter-final at FK Austria to gain a 1- 1 draw and progress on the away goals rule following a 0-0 draw in .

CSKA are the only club left in the competition who joined having been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League. They have yet to win away from home since joining the UEFA Cup campaign, but have advanced with a fine winning record from their home encounters in the knockout stages with three straight wins and an 8-0 goal difference. They are on course to remove the cup jinx on the city of Moscow - the biggest city in Europe not to have won a European trophy.

This will be the 49th match in UEFA club competitions for CSKA, who had only faced Italian opposition once before their recent meeting with Parma. In the first round of the 1991/92 Cup Winners' Cup CSKA played AS Roma, and lost at the Luzhniki stadium 2-1 after Ruggiero Rizzitelli had scored a 73rd-minute winner. CSKA managed to win the return leg in Rome with Sergei Dimitriev's 13th-minute goal, but the Italian side held on to win on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline.

This season, CSKA have progressed by eliminating SL Benfica in the Round of 32 with a 2-0 home win and a 1-1 draw in Lisbon followed by an identical result in the last 16 against FK Partizan, drawing 1-1 in

Belgrade and winning 2-0 at home. The Russian side continued their impressive form in the home leg of their quarter-final tie against AJ Auxerre with Chidi Odiah, Sergei Ignashevich, Vagner Love and scoring in a 4-0 win, while limiting the French recovery in the second leg to a 2-0 defeat.

DOMESTIC FORMGUIDE

Under-pressure Parma turn to youth (Monday, 25 April 2005) Coach Pietro Carmignani will turn to youth for the first leg of Parma FC's UEFA Cup semi-final against PFC CSKA Moskva, with relegation from Serie A becoming an increasingly worrying prospect.

Star substitutes The Gialloblù were beaten 3-0 at AC Milan on Saturday and now sit 19th in the table, just three points above resurgent basement club Atalanta BC with five games remaining. The crucial home match against AS Livorno Calcio next Sunday means Carmignani is likely to rest key players such as Alberto Gilardino and Domenico Morfeo, who could start on the bench. Parma cannot afford any more injuries with Damiano Ferronetti (leg), Marco Marchionni (knee), Vincenzo Grella (knee) and Stefano Bettarini (thigh) already sidelined.

Squad rotation "Reaching the UEFA Cup final would be a fantastic achievement," the coach said. "Unfortunately, the two semi-finals are scheduled in a very important period for us and we will have to continue our rotation system in order to preserve players for the domestic league. We have two crucial games for avoiding relegation at home to Livorno and [AS] Roma and we have to win both.

'Sole focus' "In the UEFA Cup I will field several young players but I'm sure they will be able to handle it. So far we have always managed to qualify even resting key players, and I think we can do it again. Obviously CSKA are favourites, especially because they can focus only on this game."

'Good strikers' CSKA midfielder Yuri Zhirkov insists the tag of favourites will count for little at the Ennio Tardini on Thursday. "It's nice to be named among the favourites to win a competition," he said. "But looking at this tournament, you can see that many favourites are already out. Parma have serious problems as they are fighting for survival in Serie A. But Italians are Italians and they have good strikers in their squad. I consider Parma favourites but we only have one task - to win the UEFA Cup."

Love hurts CSKA's weekend fixture with FC Torpedo Moskva was postponed in order to give Valeriy Gazzaev's side more time to prepare for the trip to Italy. Vágner Love is nursing a knock sustained in the second leg of the quarter-final against AJ Auxerre but Osmar Ferreyra is finally back in action. The Argentinian winger played against FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast last week in a 2-1 quarter-final victory sealed by goals from Jurijs Laizans and Evgeni Aldonin.

No home comforts for rivals (Monday, 18 April 2005) Exhausted from their respective UEFA Cup quarter-final exploits on Thursday night, Parma FC and PFC CSKA Moskva both slipped up on their return to domestic action on Sunday. CSKA, playing their fifth game of the 2005 Russian Premier-Liga season, conceded their first goal of the campaign in a 1-0 defeat at FC Zenit St. Petersburg - but the situation for Parma looks far more serious.

Tough matches The Gialloblú's 2-0 defeat at AC Chievo Verona has left them just a point above the Serie A relegation zone with matches against high-flying UC Sampdoria, AC Milan, AS Roma and Juventus FC among their remaining seven fixtures. While they chase silverware in Europe, fans are worrying that their 15-year stay in the top flight may be nearing its end.

Knee injuries Parma midfielder Mark Bresciano missed the game against Chievo through suspension while Marco Marchionni and Vincenzo Grella are still sidelined with knee injuries and look unlikely to recover in time for

the first leg against CSKA in ten days' time.

Love hurts 's solitary goal undid CSKA, who were without Vágner Love after the Brazilian international picked up a leg injury in the second leg against Auxerre. He is expected back in training ahead of the trip to Parma, although Evgeni Aldonin will not be available due to suspension.
