64 1 Douglas Highlights Iron Eagle Challenge Eric Douglas of Vicksburg, a sophomore outfielder, recently won the first annual Iron Eagle Challenge. The Challenge is a series of strength and conditioning tests that took place over three days and signified the culmination of fall baseball at Hinds. Points were given to the top five finishers in each event, and the final points were tallied at the end of the Challenge to determine an individual winner among the position players and and a winner among the Maroon and Gray teams. Douglas finished first among the position players by totaling 640 points, while Daniel Cowart of Brandon finished first among the pitchers with 475 points, narrowly beating Derek Casola of West Monroe, La., who finished with 465 points. The Maroon team was the winning team, prevailing by a large margin over the Gray team. The events included a dumbbell bench press, shuttle run, mile run and towel hold among many others. The Challenge concluded with a grueling obstacle course spread out over the track and practice football field. “I thought this was a great way to conclude our fall,” said Hinds coach Sam Temple. “The guys really competed in each event, and it was nice to see them get after it and try to beat one another.” The top five position players were recognized, while only the top three pitchers were recognized due to the smaller number of pitchers.
