PRESIDENT TRUMP is reportedly considering an expansion to his controversial move to ban laptops and large electronic devices on certain flights into America. The initial ban was introduced in March and included devices on certain flights departing the Middle East and North Africa. The President’s move prompted the UK government to implement a similar ban. Now it’s been revealed that the Department of Homeland Security is considering extending the ban to include all U.S.-bound flights from Europe. “Actions taken by governments to protect the safety of their citizens shouldn’t create more questions than answers – and many questions remain about the initial electronic devices ban that this potential expansion to all of Europe doesn’t answer,” said Greeley Koch, Executive Director of the Association circumvented, even if all of Europe is of Corporate Travel Executives. subject to them? in australia “Why did the U.S. and the U.K. target “Travellers deserve better solutions, and SECURITY ADVICE has prompted the different countries for the initial ban, and we call on our governments to deliver them.” Australian Government to introduce why didn’t other countries follow suit? OUR LIFE motto is to collect moments and memories, not possessions. Hawaii is one of the best destinations in the world that offers your family the opportunity to bond over these priceless memories in a tropical location that is beautiful, laid back and full of Aloha – that’s Hawaiian for love. Here are five ways you can go deep and wide with your memories on your family holiday to the Hawaiian Islands.

5 SUP WITH GREEN TURTLES, MAUI

There’s no family water activity we like better than supping. Ka’anapali Beach, on the island of Maui, is one of the best places to SUP in Hawaii. With crystal clear waters, picturesque views out to Lanai Island and plenty of fish and green turtles swimming underneath, the kids will love it. Paddle over to Black Rock and jump off the board with your snorkel gear. Resident turtles like to feed off the rocks and are not bothered by your presence. Be sure to hang around for sunset. Every evening, a cliff diver lights the torches along the cliffs of Black Rock and then dives off in a re-enactment of a feat by Maui’s much loved King Kahekili. We recommend watching it (and a stunning Maui sunset) from the Cliff Dive Bar located in the Sheraton Hotel.

The turtles basking in the sun right on the beach. calmest area is at the southern end of the bay, next to the breakwater. There’s a wide reef in the middle of the bay and the waves that break on it are usually small, which makes it a good spot for beginners. KAUAI Lydgate Beach Park is located on the east side of Kauai adjacent to the Wailua River. The two rock-enclosed ponds create a safe haven from the open ocean waves, while still allowing the small reef fish to move into the pond through the crevices. This spot will almost guarantee that you will see a variety of tropical fish. The protected calm waters, posted lifeguard and array of fish make this the perfect beginner beach for snorkelling. MAUI Hamoa Beach is approximately 300 metres in length and more than 30 metres wide. There are plenty of trees and lush vegetation giving the beach plenty of shade. The beach has sea cliffs surrounding it and there are toilets and showers available.

TRAVELTALK WINTER 2017 | 53 CANADA

BEAR thrills JON UNDERWOOD ventures into the wilderness around Jasper and has a close encounter with a local resident.

A SQUEAL of excitement erupts from the back of the bus. Kelly is the first to spot him and every head cranes to look where she’s pointing. It’s a surprise the vehicle doesn’t tip over with everyone now rushing to catch a glimpse out of the left hand windows. Slowly, and with a slightly wobbly gait, the black bear makes its way down the side of the hill towards our now stationary coach. Kendra, our encyclopaedic guide, says he’s probably just woken up from his winter hibernation, but looks in great shape thanks to a bumper berry season last year. There’s always something magical about viewing wild animals in their natural habitat, but to see this magnificent animal just metres away by the edge of a busy road is slightly surreal. Kendra sums it up perfectly. “I see a lot of bears on this drive but it never loses its special feeling.” My bear-ly believable encounter comes just minutes after leaving Jasper on a Maligne Valley sightseeing tour. The drive up to Maligne Lake cuts through Jasper National Park, which at 11,000 square kilometres is the largest National Park in the Canadian Rockies and attracts some two million visitors a year. Apart from being home to bears, moose, elk and all kinds of indigenous fauna, it is also a designated Dark Sky Preserve and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Having taken a trillion shots of ‘Yogi’, we continue our drive, visiting Maligne Canyon and Medicine Lake before arriving at our destination. You’ll soon learn never to put your camera away when visiting Canada and Maligne Lake is another great snap-worthy location, offering guests the chance to enjoy a scrummy lunch (try the homemade soup!) and a cruise on the lake, voted ‘Best Boat Cruise in Canada’ by eight million subscribers to Reader’s Digest. But it’s the bear sighting that has everyone on the coach chatting excitedly on the way back to Jasper, even more so when another one is spotted on the return journey. It seems there really is no limit to how much bear you can bear. ■ sundogtours.com

BORN TO BE MILD “Two things happen when people put on the gear. They either get aggressive or kinky.” Those were the slightly unsettling words of Terry, my ‘pilot’, as we donned the necessary leatherwear ahead of a ride with Jasper Motorcycle Tours. I have to say, I felt rather empowered putting on the chaps, gloves, jacket, bandana and helmet, but fortunately neither ready to pick a fight or seek out the nearest bondage dungeon. Sliding into the heated sidecar on a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic, it was time to head back into the National Park. Being so low to the ground it felt like we were going considerably faster than the 100 kilometres an hour it showed on the speedo and the noise it made as Terry gunned the machine was electrifying. It’s easy to see why this has been ranked the number one tour experience in Jasper on Trip Advisor. We stopped to take in the views around Hanging Valley before I swapped places with my fellow rider and sat behind Terry for the ride back to Jasper. Heads turned as we thundered back into town and it was with great reluctance I stepped off the bike and ditched the leathers. Definitely a must-do experience when in Jasper...and who knows, you might find a whole new side to you that you didn’t know existed! ■ jaspermotorcycletours.com

LET’S GET PHYSICAL Like the French, the residents of New Caledonia, I notice, are a healthy looking lot, despite the decadent food and wine. Or perhaps it’s because of it. Either way, it’s a positive reflection of the place itself. Wend your way around Noumea’s popular bays and you’ll notice a common thread; that is, the number of people exercising. Most are jogging along idyllic waterfront – at all hours – but there are even workout stations planted at various points along the runs that are being used. And this isn’t to mention the basketball and tennis, watersports like kiteboarding and other outdoor activities happening around town. So that’s how they get away with indulging in all of those yummy New Cal cheeses and pastries… But there are better ways travellers can combine exercise and sightseeing here. A day after my four hour food experience at Lezard, I’m taking up one such option with Toutazimut, an adventure tour company that runs 4WD trips to some of southern New Cal’s prettiest spots, where guests can trek or swim to their heart’s content (and health). The first stop on our tour is just 40 kilometres from Noumea, high in the Koghis Mountains. It’s a windy drive up, but the lookout affords the best views of the city and its surrounds, our driver guide and Toutazimut founder Axelle Battie says. Just a little further up the hill, we pull into a lovely French-style chalet, to which Toutazimut has exclusive access, and proceed on foot. Axelle offers hiking tours that range from easy to exhausting, the latter of which even involves some ‘climbing’. But what they share is beautiful scenery through rainforest familiar yet foreign to this Aussie. I recognise the rich red earth common in parts of Australia. But there are trees unique to New Caledonia, such as the trunk-less park where Axelle leads hikes centred on Caledonian Royal fern, and the world’s tallest the Dumbéa tributary. Located between fern, which grows to some 30 metres. If mountains covered in greenery (and that you’re lucky, you may even spot New Cal’s red soil) and bordered by boulders, the national bird, the flightless cagou, the New river evokes images of Australia’s Northern Caledonian parakeet, or the world’s largest Territory – except here, Axelle reminds us, pigeon, le notou. there aren’t crocodiles or any harmful wildlife Though we don’t make it as far as some of for that matter.
