Next summer there will be the annual Allotment Walk lead by the Allotment Manager, Mr Martin Foy, keep a look out for the date as part of the Walking Festival!! It is always impressive when new plot diggers take on a piece of heavily overgrown land and through sheer hard graft bring it into production for flowers and vegetables. In particular, Mr Foy has been pleased with the change in fortune of the sites at Gallows Hill and Whitebridge. Less than three years ago these sites were in very poor condition. With new diggers the plots are being transformed and Otley is that much the richer for their efforts. Traditionally, plot holders are “seen” as the older generation but increasingly the younger generations are coming through to grow fine food, improve the environment and enrich the community. KEEP DIGGING AND SEE YOU AT THE NEXT COMPETITION !!! BRIGHOUSE & RAISTRICK Otley Mandarins BRASS BAND CONCERT

An exotic visit to Wharfemeadows Park in recent months has been a female mandarin, a small grey duck with white “spectacles” which has tended to keep to the south side of the river just below the bridge where there is some overhanging vegetation and where, as a woodland duck, it perhaps feels more at home. It is surely the advance guard for greater numbers of these, the most beautiful of all ducks. They are natives of Japan, China and Siberia but were first imported into this country around 1745 although a free-flying population only began to establish itself in the twentieth century. There are now about 7000 mandarins in Britain, an important population for a conservation point of view as it constitutes 10% of the world total. In the Far East their numbers are declining due to destruction of their OTLEY CIVIC CENTRE forest habitat and overhunting. In Britain they have been concentrated in the south of England but have SATURDAY 31st MARCH 2007 been spreading north. In Yorkshire a stronghold is along the Wharfe at 7.30 PM ONWARDS Bolton Woods upstream from the Cavendish Pavilion where winter flocks of up to 40 can now be found. A favourite spot for them is just beyond SELECTION OF POPULAR AND LIGHT where the woods finish half a mile before Barden Bridge. The males are spectacular with broad splashes of orange in their crests, CLASSICAL MUSIC moustache plumes and in the strange “sail” feathers which rise over their backs. These features are emphasised when the drakes puff out TICKETS AVAILABLE their purple breast and spread their head feathers in dazzling display as AT OTLEY CIVIC CENTRE FROM 1ST FEBRUARY 2007 they pair up at the beginning of the winter. Pairs can last for many years £12 & £8 CONCESSIONS and in China and Japan a pair of mandarins is a symbol for marital happiness and fidelity. Denis O’Connor

The committee have, in the past held ‘juniors nights’ where senior members have given displays of various aspects of angling and these seemed to be of interest to the juniors attending. Every year two fishing matches are held for the juniors, and thanks to the most generous donations by the Angling and Country Sports Shop and donations from various members, and also the last two years from the Environment Agency, every one fishing these matches receives a prize, and by using a ‘points system’, the overall winner receives the Keith Horner Memorial Trophy, which was donated by Mrs Horner in memory of her late husband, a long time member and official of the Club. On some occasions at the start of the coarse season, seniors have gone with groups of juniors to the river and coached them on various fishing techniques. A few years ago the Girl Guides Association held a summer camp on the Weston estate and The Club received a request for some of the guides to fish the river. GUIDANCE WORKER. DON BOAST Reading OTLEY CONSERVATION Task Force Since it was founded in 1997, Otley Conservation Task Force has been raising awareness to Otley’s built heritage. The character of the town is recognised through the Otley Conservation Area and the listed status of the buildings that line the town’s streets and we are keen to promote this protection. Past project work has saved several of Otley’s best-loved buildings from the bulldozer. As a result, the former Wharfedale Union Workhouse (the old hospital) looks certain to be retained for conversion to another use, the superbly detailed Otley Liberal Club on Wesley Street now enjoys a sustainable future instead of the demolition it faced. Of particular concern to us presently is the threat to the last of the town’s decorative ironwork. The beautifully crafted wrought iron gates and railings from three closed schools dating from between the 1870s and the 1930s have disappeared this year. The few remaining late nineteenth-century cast-iron lamp posts, most made in Otley at the foundry of Fieldhouse Crossfield & Co Ltd, could suffer the same fate. We do more than just campaign between 1999 and 2003, we worked with Leeds City Council on its conservation area appraisal, and recently we assisted Otley Town Council in the lead up to restoration of the Jubilee Clock. Our members also have close associations with Otley Town Partnership and other organisations to try to shape local policies relating to the proper conservation of the built environment and so safeguard it for future generations.

If you are interested in our quest to make high quality conservation become a reality, promoting the well-being of Otley’s heritage for posterity, preserving and enhancing local identity and sense of place, please contact our Hon. Secretary, Ian Andrew, telephone: 01943-465398 or e-mail: [email protected] OTLEY•ARTS•CLUB 1947 saw the foundation of the Otley Arts Club which soon had well over a hundred members. The Club cannot boast of that number these days but we still survive. Like so many clubs which have to compete with television and the many interests that demand our attention, our numbers have fallen. However, we still have a loyal following who visit Room 4 at the Civic Centre on Wednesday evenings to paint or draw and enjoy the company and discussions about art in its many forms. So, if anyone wishes to practise their skills or to improve them the Otley Arts Club at the Civic could be a good starting point. In the New Year our meetings will include practical sessions on monochrome painting, portraits, wild life, markets and sessions on acrylics, oils and clay work. New members are always welcome, whatever their ability. Sixty years is quite a history for our club, why not be part of its future?
