We recently took a deep look into what our station needs to be able to give you the greatest opportunity while you’re here. With this, I’m happy to an- nounce the newest feature of WSBU: A tiny desk series. The “tiny desk” setting takes place in our music room, decked out with concert speakers, live stream and studio recording capability. We also have some equipment upgrades that really tie in the feel of the station. Now equipped with vintage On-Air lights spanning the studio, a 32’’ on-air world clock and brand-new chairs throughout the studio, we are finally looking pretty sharp. Perhaps our greatest upgrade is the installation of two Steve Wilt brand-new Denon CD players. The new Denons are capable of plugging your laptop right into our system, as well as equipped Station with an AUX to further our vast music vault and make live shows Manager easier. I would also like to be the first to introduce you to our new- est Co-Promotion’s Director, Emily Coughlin. We’re very excited to see what she has to bring to our promotions’ department. With the installation of our new music room “tiny-desk,” we have been taking advantage of as many in-studio live guests as possible! Our most recent include singer-songwriter Karolina Rose, a full seven-piece band named PDG World and poet/play- wright Jayleen Clark Owens. WSBU’s concert committee is com- mitted to bring as many live in-studio performances as possible throughout the next year, so be sure to watch out for what’s in store! Spring Weekend has another exciting event in store for all Sarah Dezio you Bonnies. Our concert committee put together a concert for Buzzworthy Friday May 3, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. Mom Said No, a Buffalo based Business band, will perform live in the Richter Center courts in celebration of Spring Weekend. The Buzz will be giving out some free good- Director ies during the band’s set, so don’t you dare miss it! Lastly, we have some great things in store for you in the near future. I’m very excited to announce that WSBU will be re- turning to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October of 2019. Last year was the first time in nearly a decade a college radio station broadcasted from its hollowed grounds, and this year we plan to make it even better! To find out how you can go or become in- volved, please stop by the station or come to our general interest meeting in September when we return. Until next time, keep your dial on 88.3 and help keep WSBU Steve’s album number one! choice of the issue: Robin Trower 1974 release, “Bridge of Sighs” April/may 2019 3 a sit down with a doobie brother It has now been near- a band,” Johnston said as he and I didn’t know him at that ly half a century since Tom recalls his college days. time. • BRUCE THOMAS PUMPS IT up with ELVIS COSTELLO by Dan Forte Guitar Player March 1987
BRUCE THOMAS PUMPS IT UP WITH ELVIS COSTELLO by Dan Forte Guitar Player March 1987 EVERYTHING ABOUT ELVIS Costello -his intelligent and prolific songwriting, impassioned singing, horn-rimmed visual image, ever-changing stylistic jaunts, even his anti-hero guitar playing -is so all-pervasive that his trio of sidemen, the Attractions, seems all but anonymous. (A magazine that just named Costello artist.of the year for 1986 only three years earlier misidentified the members of the Attractions in a photo caption.) But if Elvis is to be commended for his stylistic daring, the Attractions deserve equal praise for their ability to follow him down every idiomatic path, with their original fire and indelible individualism intact. Of all of Costello's talents, perhaps his strongest suit is as bandleader - not only for keeping a group together for a decade, but for choosing the musicians he did to make up his backing band. The Attractions have been together since 1977, in which time they've recorded 11 albums (plus a Best Of collection) since Elvis' debut, My Aim Is True. And night after night they have proved that at least one band (coincidentally virtually the only surviving band) from England’s punk era can play and always could. After recording his auspicious debut with uncredited backing from the American band Clover (including guitarist John McFee, currently with Southern Pacific), Declan "Elvis Costello" MacManus settled on piamst Steve Nieve, drummer Pete Thomas, and (no relation) bassist Bruce Thomas, after aluditioning, in the bassist's, words "hundreds of guys who couldn't tune up or put the guitar on right." The group's first effort, This Year's Model, not only squelched any fears of a,sophomore jinx; it kicked in with more muscle than Aim and signaled the arrival of a distinct new collective musical personality.

  • And the Band Played on Pdf
And the band played on pdf Continue Music fans were sad to learn that Tom Petty passed away at the age of 66 on Monday night. The musician became famous for his successful career as a solo artist, but worked with several bands, including The Heartbreakers. Who the Heartbreakers were Tom Petty showed they were more than a band. They were the longest-running group Petty had worked with, playing together since 1976. Since then, Petty has released more than a dozen albums, either in collaboration with The Heartbreakers or prominently. Together, the band is recognizable for some of Petty's favorite hits, including Mary Jane's Last Dance and American Girl. The introduction to American Girl has probably stuck in your head since the first time you heard it, but for some reason, you just never get tired of it. You have Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to thank for that. Petty also collaborated with the following bands: Mudcrutch (1970-1975), the supergroup The Traveling Willburys (1988-1990). On Petty's solo albums, The Heartbreakers served as studio musicians, and were additionally supported by Petty's collaborator stable. This stable famously included musicians like Jeff Lynne and George Harrison, who were also two of the petty bandmates in Willburys Travel. Petty recorded with Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks and countless other industry icons, but The Heartbreakers were his constant. According to Petty's official website, the 2017 Heartbreakers included Campbell, Trench, bassist Ron Blair, rhythm guitarist Scott Thurston and percussionist Steve Ferrone. Ferrone joined in 1994 after drummer Stan Lynch left to work on other projects.
