It’s hard to know where to start when you want to brag about Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. It’s the robust economy that makes everything else possible of course, and we could start there. But there’s something else that’s more important. Defending Our Freedom Something that makes economic success possible. Something that undergirds our lives and our freedoms. National security, of course. Grand Forks has a long military tradition with the United States Air Force and the North Dakota National Guard. Grand Forks Air Force Base is 14 miles west of the city. The National Guard Armory is at the western edge of town, visible from the interstate highway. Grand Forks Air Force Base is home to the Global Hawk Mission and 3,300 Air Force personnel and their families. 319th Reconnaissance Wing is at home on Grand Forks Air Force Base, but on any given day about 350 military personnel from GFABFB are deployed elsewhere. From this list it’s clear that Grand Forks Air Force Base plays a big role in the development of remotely piloted aircraft, also known as unmanned aerial systems or drones, and this extends to development of these systems for commercial use. Grand Forks and the Grand Forks Air Force Base are on the cutting edge of these developments. The UAS business park on the base is the first in the nation. Grand Forks County is leasing 217 acres on the base for this development.
