DeMattia Thomas Guastdlo "Home Improvements" during Homecoming '92. Philip lncamari Richard N. Robb Robin W. Scernbergh Gayle P. Thomas e's time to come home to Eastern Michigan, and we've got a [IJ few surprises in store foryou. We've fixedup and renovated a few of the" rooms" in our "house" in time foryour visit to your old college haunts. I If you haven't been here in the past five years, you'll notice several new facilities and that some of the familiarbuildings have had"facelifts." Be sure to join one of the campus tours and visit the Gary M. Owen Building in downtown Ypsilanti, and the Corporate Education Center and Huron Golf Club just off I-94. On campus, you'll want to check out the renovations ro Welch Hall and visit Sherzer Hall, now beautifully restored. And stop by McKenny Union, now being remodeled to a student-oriented center. If you haven't been here forthe last ten years, you'll want to visit the Lloyd W. Olds Student Recreation Center with its spacious pools, indoor jogging track, and health club atmosphere. At the Quirk Dramatic Arts Building, you will notice many changes, including the addition of tbe Sponberg Theatre. George G. Beaudette Another addition to campus is the Coatings Research Institute. Homecoming is the customary time for alumni to come back to campus and reunite with their schoolmates and professors. It also is the time to rekindle the school spirit and pride you have in your University. Often, when we graduate, we forget what Eastern Michigan gave us. We forget that our accomplishments now are built on what we learned while we were in school. Giving something back to your University doesn't always mean donating money; it also can mean supporting the institution by attending the games and cheering for the home team, by talking about Eastern to prospective students, and by spreading the word that Eastern Michigan is a first-class institution. Over the years, Eastern Michigan has made a commitment to restoring existing campus buildings. While the interiors may have changed and the purpose of the structures may be different, returning alumni will still sense the atmosphere of Michigan State Normal College. Not only are we making a commitment to athletics, as evidenced in rhe renovation of Rynearson Stadium, we also are making a commitment to academics by refurbishing Pease Auditorium, restoring Sherzer Hall, and creating a beautiful, "pedestrian-oriented" home for students. We are making a commitment ro the coral Universiry. Come home for a visit. We're looking forward to seeing you.

It's been said chat che college years are some of che best years in a person's life. In 1924, students at Eastern Michigan (then Michigan State Normal College) looked forward to taking part in various activities such as the College Circus, complete with acrobats and clowns, and the Kollege Komedy, a talent competition held over two nights at Pease Auditorium. Younger students geared up for the Freshman-Sophomore Meet, which showcased the athleticism of women students in the Physical Education Department. During the lace twenties and early thirties, Kresge Balls and All College Parties were popular activities. The 1940s found the country's attention focused on World War II. Students also worried about findingtime to go to the "study center" at the library, getting to their literature classes in Welch Hall on rime, and participating in "dime dances" and parties planned for "campusites and campusettes" by the Social Committee. In the 1950s, female students were represented by the Women's League while their male counterparts had a Men's Union. Another residence hall, the James M. Brown Hall, was built for male students, while women stayed in three campus buildings. The Class of 1950 was by far the largest graduating class to dare, fed by the influx of discharged World War II veterans. The 1960s were a turbulent time for che Universiry. Students protested the war in Vietnam and worked to raise

consciousness while caking pare in long-standing EMU traditions. Freshmen "coeds" had to wear green bows in their hair until Homecoming weekend, when the bows were thrown into the pre-homecoming bonfire. In the eighties and now into the nineties, life has become more complicaced for college students. F com paying tuition to household bills to finding babysitters for their children, the world of the EMU student has expanded. There is no longer a standard for a "typical" college student; he or she could be married, a single parent, working and going to school, middle-aged, or disabled. Concerns have grown beyond the expected responsibilities of being a student. Nowadays there are AIDS, alcoholism, the recession, self

esteem issues, and skyrocketing bills to worry about. To try to help students combat some of this, universities now are

providing the option to live in "dry" residence halls, where students live in an environmentfree of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs. HR 2 Eastern Michigan University • 1991 HONORROLL

It has been my pleasure to serve as the interim administrator in the Development Office the past yearduring the transition between the retirement of Jack Slater and the selection of a new director of Development. The year 1991 was a very exciting one for Eastern Michigan University. More than 15,000 donors contributed $2,033,908 to the University in support of its stu dents, activities, and programs. We are sincerely grateful for your support. We have had the opportunity this year to hire two new staffmembers in the Development Office and to benefit from the reallocation of two positions. New to the staff are Bruce Patterson, who has replaced Don Moffat as the planned giving officer, and Stephen Ragan, who is the new College of Arts and Sciences development officer, a position supported by the Division of Academic Affairs. John Nordlinger, associate director of Intercollegiate Athletics, has been transferred to the Develop ment Office to focuson athletic fund-raising. Sue McKenzie, formerlyassociate Kathleen D. Tinney director of University Publications, is serving as acting assistant director of Develop ment and is responsible forworking with private and corporate foundations. We are very excited about these new staff members who are working very hard to increase support to the University and to provide service to alumni and friends of the University. We also are very excited about the progress of the EMU Foundation. We now have twenty-seven trustees who hail from Michigan, California, Texas, Florida, and Brazil who are committed to assisting the University in reaching out to new sources of support, especially corporations, foundations, and businesses. The Foundation has assumed responsibility for the investment and management of the University's endowment and it is the Foundation's goal to increase the endowment from its current value of $8 million to $30 mi Ilion by our sesquicentennial year of 1999. It is the Foundation's position that we need to make a commitment now to ensure the future vitality of Eastern Michigan University through the support of existing endowments and the establishment of new ones. There is no denying that the Univer sity has a great many current needs. But it is critical for us also to recognize the need to provide future generations of students, our children and grandchildren, with a guarantee that Eastern Michigan University will remain the kind of quality institution that it is today.

As a result, our fund-raising efforts this year will be focused on thirteen endowments:

• College of Arts and Sciences Endowment • Wade McCree Endowment • College of Business Endowment • John W. Porter Distinguished • College of Education Endowment Chair in Urban Education • College of Health and Human Services Endowment Endowment • Center for Entrepreneurship • College of Technology Endowment Endowment • Library Endowment • Pease Auditorium Endowment • Men's Athletic Endowment • Scholarship Endowments • Women's Athletic Endowment

The EMU Foundation is now the fund-raising arm of the University and all gifts to the University should be forwardedt o and made payable to the EMU Foundation. Again, we appreciate your very generous support of Eastern Michigan University and we look forward to seeing, talking to, or corresponding with many of you during the coming year.

Kathleen D. Tinney Acting Vice President for Development EMU Foundation

Donors Supp ort.Excellence in Educatwn ------4ty Warren Scholarship benefits history students Frances R. Warren was employed at EMU as an assistant to former dean of women Susan HiU for twenty-five years. Through her estate, she has made a generous bequest to Eastern Michigan University. The largest percentage of her gift will augment the Warren Scholarship Fund, and a portion also will be used to purchase unusual or special history books. The Warren Scholarship was established in honor of Elizabeth Warren, who taught in

Eastern's History Department for thirty-seven years. Frances and her mother established the scholarship fundin Elizabeth's name to benefit histoty students.

Scholarship recipient "gives back" to University

Most students make donations to their University after they graduate. But Justin

Patterson does things differently. Patterson is making a donation to Eastern Michigan, through a life insurance policy, even before he starts school this fall. Patterson was an honor student at Plymouth-Canton High School. The recipient of a Regents Scholarship, he decided to make a commitment to the University as an expression of appreciation for having been chosen for the scholarship. A sports enthusiast, especially in golf, Patterson has earmarked his donation formen's golf scholarships. He looks forward to enrolling in the EMU Honors Program.

Amann's interests include Health and Human Services

Mary Amann, '81, has made a commitment to the University by making a donation through a life insurance policy. Amann is an occupational therapist in private practice. She is most interested in EMU's College of Health and Human Services, from which she got her degree. "I like the idea of a graduate program foroccupational therapy," she says. Amann says the school has grown "a lot" since she has been there.

Amann and her husband, Bryan, a Wayne County commissioner, spend their free time on political and community activities. They are the parents of two girls, ages seven and four.

Johnson Controls a valued friend

Johnson Controls has made a sizable pledge to the EMU College of Business

Development Fund. Contributions to the fundare used in part to equip the Gary M. Owen College of Business Building. The company also is interested in EMU's College of Technology. In addition, Johnson Controls makes regular trips to JHNSON campus to recruit students for its workforce. CONTRgLs Johnson Controls manufactures controls, automotive seating, automotive Automotive Systems Group batteries, and plastic containers and components. The company also operates the Plastics Technology Group, headquartered in Manchester, the largest U.S. producer of plastic soft drink bottles and a leading supplier of plastics blowmolding equipment and automotive plastic components.

Campaignfor Champions Success to be Celebrated

A victory celebration is planned for the Campaign for Champions October 21, at the Detroit Athletic Club. The campaign has achieved $3,560,560, or eighty-nine percent of its goal, and we are confident it will reach its goal of $4 million in gifts and pledges prior to the dinner. Detroit business leader Mel Farr, a former All-American and professional football player, will be the featured guest speaker at the event. Cocktails begin at 6 p.m., and dinner is at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the celebration go to the Campaign for Champions Athletic Endow ment Funds. For more information, please call (313) 487-0252. Improvements to Rynearson Stadium are some of the more visible signs of the campaign's success. Gifts and pledges to Rynearson total $1,684,586, while gifts and pledges to the team sports have reached $1,077,460, the Men's Athletic Endowment $339,5 16, and the Women's Athletic Endowment $405,463.

The '92 season also poses a tremen dous challenge for Eastern, with one of its most competitive schedules in school history on cap. Eastern plays an eight-game league slate, with newcomer Akron replacing Bowling Green. The Eagles also go on the road to play national powers Penn Scare, Louisiana Tech, and Army. Jim Harkema

EASTERN TODAY JJ Sankatsing Earns NCAA Honors

Sankatsing was a standout for four seasons on Head Coach Bob Maybouer's team. She became the first EMU women's athlete to win an NCAA national championship when she captured the title in the 800-meter run at the 1992 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Sankacsing finished fourthin the 800 meters at the I 992 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She also was named the Outstanding Meet Performer at the 1992 Mid-American Conference Track Championships this spring. EMU Has Positive Outlook for '92

With a year of adversity behind it along with strong, off-season training, the Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team is ready to roll in '92. A young and inexperienced '91 EMU squad stumbled to an 8- 20 record but Head Coach Nona Richardson feels her team learned a lot from that year and with the addition of several talented newcomers, Eastern should be vastly improved chis year. "There was no doubt that we knew lase year would be tough afterlosing the bulk of our offense in Sherry Anderson and Nikki Stubbs from chat 1990 team chat was 30-5," Richardson said. "We focused last year on developing our newcomers and with a strong off-season training program, we're optimistic about the upcoming season. " Eastern lost rwo standouts through graduation, honorable mention All-Mid American Conference players Stacy Graham and Pam Davan, but a strong nucleus of four starters returns. Gretchen Olsen enjoyed a strong freshmanseason in '91, finishingeighth in the MAC in assists per game (8.73) and fifth on the EMU squad in digs. Another key starter returning is Staci Laurencelle, who was fourthon the squad in digs last year. Theresa Ford spent her first fullseason in the starting lineup last year after her freshman year was halted in early October because of a knee injury. She hie at a .187 clip, which ranked fourth on the squad. Heather Waltz also found a spot in the starting rotation last year after rwo seasons of injuries. She is considered by Richardson to be one of the team leaders and a key to the success of the squad.
