I know of no calling that is more rewarding, and at the same time, more demanding than being a minister. The modern minister faces a multitude of tasks that are both exciting and exacting. He must conduct funerals and weddings, often on the same day. He must be a scholar, a public speaker, an educator, a financier, a CEO, a personnel manager, a shepherd and a personal counselor. While still a student at Baylor University I became pastor of an open country church. I soon found myself confronted with many things I had seen and even been a part of in my home church, but to which I paid little attention until I was called on to do them myself. In the next 34 years I pastored churches of all sizes, my last church having more than 7,000 members. As I became pastor of larger churches I would ask young ministers to assist me in funerals, weddings, baptisms, so they could learn firsthand what to do. What I have recorded in this book are some of the things I tried to teach them. -

CLERGY PERSONNEL MANUAL ARCHDIOCESE OF PORTLAND PREFACE TO THE 2014 EDITION OF THE CLERGY PERSONNEL MANUAL On December 8, 1979 Archbishop Cornelius Power promulgated the Clergy Personnel Manual. This Manual was the product of extensive study and consultation by the Clergy Personnel Board and finally a vote of the entire presbyterate. Since the original promulgation of the Manual, some chapters have been revised. This edition prints all the chapters in a uniform format. The organization and position titles within the Pastoral Center have changed. This edition references positions of offices that coincide with our current Pastoral Center organization. When I was an English Anglican ordinand (late 1980s), I received four and a half hours explicit teaching on Anglicanism in three years full time train- ing. When I returned to teach at a theological college five years later, I was (I think) the first person appointed to an English Anglican theological col- lege with an explicit brief to teach Anglicanism. Since then there has been a modest explosion in the teaching of Anglicanism and in teaching resources. This latest resource, in the SCM study guide series, is a sign that teaching Anglicanism is now a mainstream commitment. There was once a deep reluctance to teach ‘Anglicanism’, partly because of significant scepticism that such a thing really existed – a scepticism which is still very much alive in England even if most of the rest of the Communion regards this scepticism as nonsensical – and perhaps also because we were anxious that actually trying to teach Anglicanism would expose its divisions and contradictions. However, certainly in England, we can no longer assume that students of Anglicanism are cradle Anglicans; we cannot assume that people will carry ‘proper’ Anglicanism in their DNA. If they are to live and minister fruitfully within the Anglican context, they must have an opportunity to study Anglicanism rigorously. Some of the ten- sions in the Anglican Communion and the Church of England are simply a result of unreflective assumptions about the content and methods of Anglicanism. -

Catholic Clergy There Are Many Roles Within the Catholic Church for Both Ordained and Non-Ordained People
Catholic Clergy There are many roles within the Catholic Church for both ordained and non-ordained people. A non-ordained person is typically referred to as a lay person, or one who is not a member of the clergy. One who is ordained is someone who has received the sacrament of Holy Orders. In the Catholic Church only men may be ordained to the Clergy, which sets us apart from other Christian denominations. The reasoning behind this is fairly straightforward; Since God himself, in His human form of Jesus Christ, instituted the priesthood by the formation of the 12 Apostles which were all male, The Church is bound to follow His example. Once a man is ordained, he is not allowed to marry, he is asked to live a life of celibacy. However married men may become ordained Deacons, but if their wife passes away they do not remarry. It’s very rare, but there are instances of married men being ordained as priests within the Catholic Church. Most are converts from other Christian denominations where they served in Clerical roles, look up the story of Father Joshua Whitfield of Dallas Texas. At the top of the Catholic Clergy hierarchy is the Pope, also known as the Vicar of Christ, and the Bishop Rome. St. Peter was our very first Pope, Jesus laid his hands upon Peter and proclaimed “upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” ~MT 16:18. Our current Pope is Pope Francis, formally Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina. -

Confidentiality in Arbitration: Beyond the Myth Richard C. Reuben* I. INTRODUCTION Confidentiality has long been part of the mythology of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). That is to say, one of the apparent virtues of ADR is that its processes have been viewed as confidential. This aspect of the mythology has come under more scrutiny in recent years, particularly in the mediation context.2 This is not surprising considering the popularity of mediation 3 and the centrality of confidentiality to the mediation process. 4 Confidentiality was the primary thrust of the Uniform Mediation Act (UMA), 5 and in their * Richard C. Early Irish society provided a great contrast to the society of the Roman Empire. For example, it had no towns or cities, no central government or no standard currency. Many Scholars have described it as tribal, rural, hierarchical and familiar. The Tuath was the basic political group or unit and was a piece of territory ruled by a King. It is estimated that there were about 150 such Tuath in pre – Christian Ireland. The basic social group was the fine and included all relations in the male line of descent. -

Each year our elderly and dependent adult population increases. While many of our seniors and dependent adults live healthy, active lives, some are not so fortunate. In today’s economy, our avail- able resources cannot keep up with this rapid growth of older and dependent adults. We must pool our knowledge, expertise and resources to work smarter and more e$ciently to combat abuse and neglect and help this population continue to live to their fullest capacity, free from abuse, neglect and exploitation. The purpose of Mandated Reporter training and this book is to provide information to mandated reporters by helping them recognize signs of abuse and neglect, informing them of their legal obliga- tion to report, and how, when and where to report. Getting involved in building a stronger community care net that can save lives takes very little time or e#ort, but making a di#erence to one person, whose life may be saved or improved, is tremendous. Working together, we can make a di#erence! Some Important Statistics: In the United States, the 2010 Census recorded the greatest number and proportion of people aged 65 and older in all census history: 40.3 million, or 13% of the total population. Nearly 70% of all reported sexual assaults (including assaults on adults) occur to children ages 17 and under. An estimated 39 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse exist in America today. 3 Prevalence of Child Sexual Abuse Even within the walls of their own homes, children are at risk for sexual abuse 30-40% of victims are abused by a family member.
