  • Stockholm Syndrome : How It Has Been Romanticized in The
Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology Issn No : 1006-7930 Stockholm Syndrome : How it has been romanticized in the Bollywood films of the 21st century Priyam Ponkhi Saikia MA in English with Communication Studies (4th Semester) Christ (Deemed-to-be) University, Bangalore Introduction: The film industry has been influential in creating changes and bringing about reformations in the society across time period. Mickey Angelov while talking about the influence of movies on society quotes John Guida, “Since the cinema industry is so big and because films have become such a big part of our lives, the overall impact and influence that movies have on our society is immense” . But these impacts can be positive as well as negative. Bollywood has always been claimed by a lot of critics to be romanticizing certain issues where it does not necessarily need to. One of them is the ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. Stockholm syndrome is a condition that causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity. It is a psychological response wherein a captive begins to identify closely with his or her captors, as well as with their agenda and demands. The syndrome has been processed in various Bollywood movies starting right from Mujhe Jeene Do (1963) to the very recent Hero (2015), which is, in fact, a remake of the 1984 film with the same name. This paper aims at analysing four different Bollywood films of the 21st century with a plot involving Stockholm Syndrome and looking at how the syndrome has been romanticized in these films.

  • How Indian Cinema Evolved Into Being One of the Most Powerful Modes of Entertainment
Publication: BusinessToday.in Date: 06/01/2019 How Indian cinema evolved into being one of the most powerful modes of entertainment Today, cinema has become one of the most preferred and powerful mediums of communication and entertainment. Movies play a formative role in developing a culture or addressing a contemporary issue. Sanjay Gaikwad It's Christmas and New Year. During the time, Indian cinema always sets a big platform for bringing cheer in people's lives. Today, cinema has become one of the most preferred and powerful mediums of communication and entertainment. Movies play a formative role in developing a culture or addressing a contemporary issue, not just in India but also across the globe. For example, a documentary called 'Harlan County, Unites States of America', directed by Barbara Kopple played a crucial role in bringing the positive change in miners' lives. It was a short film orbiting around a strike against the Duke Power Company held in 1972 by the coal miners. The issue went on for a long period and violence erupted and one of the miners was killed during the strike. Harlan County was filmed during the middle of the chaos, and people still believe that the presence of the crew and cameras had played a crucial role in mellowing down the level of harm it could have created. This documentary went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1976. It has also played a role towards addressing the abysmal issues of the mining industry at the national level. Indian Cinema Industry has also evolved in the due course of time since its inception.

Bollywood’s Rs.100 Crore Club: A Management Perspective Jojo Joy N Assistant Professor, SDMIMD, Mysore [email protected] Abstract Recently a leading B-school in India hit the headlines for having apparently ‘cracked the blockbuster code’ that would help Bollywood predict a film’s future at the box office. The research team, reported news dailies, devised a set of statistical models to figure out the correlation coefficient between a film’s pre-release marketing budget and its success in the first three days. In this rather novel practice, there are at least two things that would capture the interest of management practitioners: one, the acknowledgement of Bollywood as an industry at a disciplinary level; two, the continuing obsessive concern with the explosive figures at box office. This imminent interest to ‘decode’ the business of contemporary film industry is symptomatic of a compelling turning point in the field of management studies in India. Bollywood, being the largest contributor to Indian film industry’s revenue and the largest in the world in terms of the number of films it produces, is an ample canvass for a study of this nature. This working paper locates itself within this new niche which engages with the Hindi film industry from a management perspective. Accordingly, it seeks to understand the changing paradigms in the Indian film industry, namely Bollywood, by examining the increasing trend of attributing 87 the success of a film to its entry to what has now come to be termed as the ‘Rs.100 crore club’. Key Words: Bollywood, Hundred Crore Club, Market Development, Revenue Model Recently a leading B-school in India hit the headlines for having apparently ‘cracked the blockbuster code’ that would help Bollywood predict a film’s future at the box office.

THE FAULTS IN OUR STARS THE KASHYAP BROTHERS, ANURAG AND ABHINAV, HAVEN’T PROVEN TO BE LUCKY FOR RANBIR KAPOOR. BUT, THAT STILL DOESN’T MEAN HE ISN’T ALREADY THE DEFINING ACTOR, AND SUPERSTAR, OF HIS GENERATION. BY TANUL THAKUR Besharam Ranbir Kapoor wasn’t big on cricket; UNLIKE MOST KIDS HIS AGE, he preferred football. And, he was more than half a decent player. Besides playing in under-14 and under-16 tournaments, he also played at the district level. Kapoor’s love for football, however, didn’t happen by chance. “There were so many better cricket players than me. So, I guess that was a bit of a hang-up that I would not play cricket, I would play football, because I am at least good at this,” Kapoor said in a September 2012 interview. Excelling at the game was as important as playing it. If Kapoor couldn’t master the game, he wasn’t going to sulk and mope; he would choose a different game instead. Close to a decade and a half later, around August 2008, Kapoor was a fledgling entrant in a much bigger game — one that sees many participants, few heroes; one where fame and obscurity is separated by one Friday; one that operates by its own mysterious rules. Kapoor had been a Bollywood actor for around a year, but his choice of films, or roles, lacked depth — his debut, Saawariya, a commercial and critical disaster, was the kind of film that decimates careers in Bollywood; his second, Bachna Ae Haseeno, was a banal romcom.
