Dear Friends,

On behalf of the State of New Jersey, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to all those gathered for Newark Museum’s annual Legacy Gala. Being home to extensive art and natural science collections that have entertained and educated visitors for more than 100 years, the Newark Museum has been an integral part of New Jersey’s historical and cultural landscape. With an impressive array of educational programs for children, adults, and families, the Museum has proven to be a true asset to New Jersey. I commend the Museum’s trustees, staff, and supporters for their commitment to providing visitors with high-quality exhibits of art, science, and history. I am proud to join the Museum in recognizing tonight’s honorees: Mark B. Grier, John Schreiber, and American Express. Their contributions to the Museum and its mission have had a significant impact on the success of this valuable institution.

Best wishes for an enjoyable and successful event.

My very best,

Philip D. Murphy Governor A Message from the Gala Committee Leadership

Dear Friends,

We welcome you to the 2019 Newark Museum Legacy Gala. Tonight we honor three of the Museum’s greatest friends and supporters: Mark B. Grier, Vice Chairman and Board Member of Prudential Financial, Inc.; John Schreiber, President and CEO of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center; and American Express, one of our valuable corporate partners. These honorees share a commitment to advancing the arts throughout the New York/New Jersey region and to broadening and diversifying arts participation. Their vital support for the Newark Museum has helped ensure that visitors continue to enjoy world-class art and science exhibitions, collections and programs. Mark Grier has served as both an esteemed advisor and generous patron of the Museum for more than 20 years. We honor him tonight for playing such a critical role in making the arts more accessible to the people of Newark, including here at the Museum and at the Newark School of the Arts. John Schreiber’s commitment to excellent and diverse programming, as well as arts education that addresses community needs, has made NJPAC one the foremost arts centers in the country. We salute his exemplary leadership at NJPAC, as well as his advocacy efforts to ensure the vitality and sustainability of the entire arts community in New Jersey. We are recognizing American Express for its work to promote diversity and inclusion in workplaces across the country. The Newark Museum has strengthened its ability to recruit and retain diverse staff members across all levels of the organization, and thereby improved its ability to serve diverse communities, thanks to pro-bono consulting assistance and grant support from American Express. Founded on the beliefs that art can be found everywhere in the world and that are for everyone, the Newark Museum has long championed the principles of diversity and inclusion. Today, the Museum’s distinguished global art collections, innovative exhibitions, and engaging educational programming continue to reflect a deep institutional commitment to diversity and to cross-cultural learning.

Thank you for joining us tonight as we celebrate this evening’s outstanding honorees.

Allen J. Karp Executive Vice President, Healthcare Management and Health Analytics Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey Gala Co-Chair A Message from the Mayor The Honorable Ras J. Baraka

Dear Friends of the Newark Museum:

On behalf of the people of Newark, I would like to extend my best wishes to everyone attending tonight’s Newark Museum Legacy Gala. The Newark Museum’s theme for this year’s gala is “Diversity,” and the four major exhibitions it is highlighting speak to that mission: an exhibition on birdwatching; “Seeing America: 20th and 21st Century,” which reimagines its galleries of modern and contemporary American art to expand its range of visions; “Skywriters and Constellations,” which unites artistic and scientific views of the galaxy; and “Wendy Red Star: A Scratch on the Earth,” which displays 40 works by Red Star, a leading artist from the Crow tribe. We are awed by these brilliant and unique exhibitions on their own, but hold even greater admiration for members of the Newark Museum team that work together to achieve this harmonious whole. This year the Newark Museum will award its Medal for Meritorious Community Service to John Schreiber, President and CEO of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the Newark Museum Commemorative Medal Award to American Express, and the Philanthropic Leadership Award to Prudential Financial, Inc. Vice Chairman Mark B. Grier. We salute all of these great honorees for their work to support Newark and the Newark Museum.

Congratulations to the Newark Museum––the cultural heart of the City of Newark!

Sincerely,

Ras J. Baraka Mayor A Message from the Director & CEO

Dear Friends, Esteemed Guests and Supporters of the Newark Museum,

Welcome to this evening’s Legacy Gala celebrating our 110th year, which is my first! I am delighted to meet so many of you in one place, face to face, and to share with you my excitement about the Newark Museum and the great city of Newark. Visitorship is up, on-line engagement is strong, and the Museum’s dedication to our artistic programming and collections, like our new Seeing America galleries, are being recognized nationally. Thank you for your support of all we do here to enrich the entire New Jersey and New York region. Moving forward we look to emphasize and improve upon the Museum’s successes. With our renowned global collections and unparalleled commitment to educational programming and audience engagement, the Newark Museum is committed to being a leading cultural anchor institution for Newark and the state of New Jersey. Our exhibitions and public programs are designed to be accessible and relevant to audience members of all ages and backgrounds to align with founder ’s inclusive vision of a museum for everyone. Looking to the future, the Newark Museum will become the destination museum in the New Jersey and New York region. To do this, we are working to present exhibitions and programs that engage diverse audiences in innovative and provocative ways, and ignite serious, socially conscious conversations about contemporary issues. Emblematic of the Museum’s dedication to justice and the everlasting impact of art and culture, this year we honor three long-time champions and friends of the Newark Museum who have supported many of our outstanding exhibitions, programs and special initiatives:

n Mark Grier, philanthropist and Vice Chairman of Prudential Financial, Inc.; n John Schreiber, Tony and Emmy Award winner, President and CEO of NJPAC, and arts omnivore; n American Express, a leader in fostering a workplace culture where differences are valued and expressed freely.

I also want to express my gratitude to our outstanding Legacy Gala Co-Chairs, Natalie B. and Obie L. McKenzie, Sara Bonesteel, and Allen J. Karp. We are all enjoying this fabulous night because of their efforts. Please join us in paying tribute to our honorees who are making a difference. As the Museum grows we need more of you to help support the cause––the lives we touch and improve, the children we teach and those for whom the programs at the Newark Museum are a lifeline, connecting today’s issues with timeless themes of diaspora and belonging.

You make the Newark Museum happen…and it’s a beautiful thing. Have fun tonight!

With gratitude,

Linda C. Harrison A Message from the County Executive The Honorable Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr.

Dear Friends:

It is a pleasure to welcome everyone to the Newark Museum’s Annual “Legacy Gala.” Events such as this highlight the role the Museum has in supporting the arts, culture and history and the important place it has in our community as an educational facility, destination and downtown landmark. The Newark Museum has a legacy that is just as vibrant as the exhibits in its halls. This season’s displays demonstrate the diversity of the Museum’s collections and its ability to identify art in all subjects and from all places. This is reflective of the community that hosts the Museum, which is why it is so important an institution such as this be preserved and supported so it can continue its marvelous work. In addition, we are proud to join the Museum in recognizing MARK B. GRIER, Prudential Financial, Inc. Vice Chairman, with the Philanthropic Leadership Award, JOHN SCHREIBER, NJPAC President and CEO, with the Medal for Meritorious Community Service and AMERICAN EXPRESS with the Newark Museum Commemorative Medal Award. This year’s honorees demonstrate the breadth of support the Museum enjoys from all segments of the community. Congratulations and best wishes on future success. Working together, we will continue Putting Essex County First.

Sincerely,

onight, we honor Mark B. Grier, Vice Chairman of Prudential Financial, Inc., the recipient of the Newark Museum’s Philanthropic Leadership Award. This medal recognizes leaders who have consistently incorporated philanthropic strategies and endeavors into their Tpersonal lives and professional careers while inspiring others to do the same. Mark’s impact includes a long history with the Newark Museum. With his wife Kathy, a Newark Museum Trustee for more than 10 years, Mark co-chaired the Museum’s 2009 Centennial Gala, resulting in the most successful event in Museum history. The Griers have personally supported many exhibitions, acquisitions, and programs. Mark’s vision and influence have not only helped the Newark Museum but other organizations as well. The Newark School of the Arts boasts The Kathy and Mark Grier Conservatory Division, a full-day Saturday pre-college program for students between the ages of 5 and 18. Each student receives private music lessons, enriched by conservatory-level theory and music history classes. Additionally, Mark serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) and Achieve, Inc. He is also on the Board of Directors of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) and the Board of Trustees of Eisenhower Fellowships. In his role as Vice Chairman of Prudential Financial, Inc., Mark is a member of the firm’s Board of Directors and leads Global Strategic Initiatives, which oversees Prudential’s international retirement and China strategies. He previously managed Prudential’s Finance, Risk Management, Chief Investment, Corporate Actuarial, Global Business and Technology Solutions, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Global Marketing and Communications functions. He is scheduled to retire this year. Prudential was founded in Newark more than 140 years ago on the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve financial security. This founding purpose of helping to create economic and social opportunity remains the same today and is evident in the company’s enduring commitment to Newark. While other companies left Newark during challenging times, Prudential remained and continued to invest in the city. In the last decade alone, Prudential, with Mark’s leadership, has committed more than $1 billion to Newark through impact investments, grants, corporate contributions and human capital. Mark, in both his personal and professional endeavors has enriched the lives of many people around the world, and especially here in our special city of Newark. So, tonight we present Mark with the Newark Museum’s Philanthropic Leadership Award, which is offered with our enduring gratitude.

t tonight’s Legacy Gala we honor John Schreiber, President and CEO of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), with the Newark Museum Medal for Meritorious Community Service. Upon his arrival in Newark, John stated, “NJPAC is all about Acommunity building, about making the arts available to a great diversity of audiences. This place wants to be the heart and soul of the arts community in the city and in the state. That’s what’s thrilling and exciting.” John certainly succeeded and tonight we celebrate his vision and the programs and performances he presents each day. As John transformed NJPAC into the most diverse performing arts center in the country, he made sure the programs educate as well as entertain. Saturday and summer classes offer young students immersive courses in dance, film, jazz, hip hop, and theater. John has also been an enthusiastic partner with the Newark Museum. In 2018, the Newark Museum, NJPAC and the Newark Historical Society jointly presented The Activist Collector: An African-American Woman’s Journey from Newark to Pre-Apartheid South Africa, moderated by the Museum’s Curator of the Arts of Global Africa. Newark Museum educators have offered innovative holiday activities as part of NJPAC’s Kwanzaa celebrations, and each August the Museum and NJPAC join other Newark venues and welcome thousands of visitors to the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival. In October 2018, under John’s leadership, NJPAC unveiled One Theater Square, a stunning and dynamic 23-story building of apartments, parking and retail space on the NJPAC campus. The commission of One Theater Square begins a new chapter of John’s commitment to the Newark community. NJPAC already offers free events and school programs in all five wards of Newark. John now hopes to combine continuing a vibrant arts community while expanding the development of the city. “Our opportunity is to be a central contributor to the reality of a 24/7 live-work-play destination,” John has said, as he looks to develop additional residential housing, education complexes and community centers. John envisions the vibrancy of the NJPAC arts community as a vehicle to build on the momentum that is Newark today. Tonight we celebrate the many contributions John Schreiber has made since coming to Newark. He is a wonderful neighbor and partner of the Newark Museum. John shares the Museum’s century-long passion and vision for Newark and we are grateful for his efforts that are helping make Newark the destination city of New Jersey. One of the largest financial services companies in the world, American TExpress is a leader in supporting the cultural, educational and social needs of the communities it serves. American Express gives almost $40 million in grants and support each year. In addition, thousands of American Express employees give generously of their time and talent to community projects and organizations. Over the past year, American Express has partnered with the Newark Museum, first as part of a Serve2Gether Consulting Challenge program and later through a grant award, to strengthen the Museum’s ability to recruit, support and retain employees from diverse backgrounds. This collaboration is not only helping the Museum build a diverse workforce across all organizational levels, but has jumpstarted several new initiatives to address a broader range of diversity and inclusion issues in the workplace, including: 1) the review and updating of hiring practices to encourage the recruitment of diverse candidates; 2) the establishment of a new staff Diversity and Inclusion Committee that assists the Museum’s leadership with recruitment, professional development and other strategies for creating an inclusive workplace; 3) diversity training for the entire Museum staff and volunteer corps. Diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion are now recognized as vital to the success and sustainability of America’s cultural institutions.
