2. Arrival

2.1. By Plane

There are 2 airports that service the Washington DC region:

• Dulles International – IAD: The international airport has direct flights between many European hubs (Frankfurt, Paris, Heathrow) as well as domestic routes. • Reagan National – DCA: The domestic airport has direct flights between major U.S. cities, and does not have international service.

Dulles International Airport is located 25 miles from the city center of Washington, and is not directly accessible via the Metro system. There are a couple of options for reaching the city available:

• Washington Flyer Coach: This bus offers regularly scheduled service between IAD and the West Falls Church Metro station, which is located on the Orange line. The tickets cost $10 ($18 for a Round Trip) and the trip time between the airport and the Metro station will take 20‐30 minutes. The trip between West Falls Church and Farragut West Metro stations will take between 15‐ 20 minutes. Board the Orange line in the direction of “New Carrolton” when traveling to Washington DC . Travel in the direction of “Vienna” when leaving Washington DC to head to the airport. • SuperShuttle Shared Van Service: This is a door to door transit service that is shared with other passengers. The tickets cost about $30 each way between IAD and the central part of Washington. Travel times can take up to an hour depending on traffic. • Washington Flyer Taxi: This taxi service offers direct service between the airport and downtown Washington DC. Cost can be up to $60 each way. • Rental cars are available through major companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Thrifty). Note that driving and parking in Washington can be challenging.

Reagan National Airport is located about 5 miles south of the city center, and is accessible via the Blue and Yellow lines of the Metro system. Look for signs to the Metro when leaving the airport, and board a Blue line train toward “Largo” to reach downtown Washington DC. The trip will take about 15 minutes to Farragut West.
