Work Choices for Developmentally Disabled Workers May Be Weakened NEWSLETTER Helping Individuals Reach Life’s Aspirations MAY 2013 Work Choices for Developmentally A Message from the President Disabled Workers May Be Weakened Dear Lifespire Staff, Almost a year ago, members of CSEA’s By Congressional Bid to Repeal negotiating team began working on a new three year contract with members of Portion of Labor Law Lifespire’s negotiating team. The initial weeks were spent exchanging ideas about what aspects of the existing contract worked well and what items did not. To a large extent most of these language/ procedural matters were resolved by late fall in 2012. At that point both sides began the most difficult part of the negotiations which consisted of the “economic section”. Representatives from CSEA under the leadership of Pam Marshall, Local President, made it clear that even though they recognized that funding for our field was constantly shrinking that the union members felt that after several years of no raises they wanted to see some permanent increase in the wages of the bargaining unit Future work options for developmentally disabled adults will be greatly eroded if members. Keith Lee, Chief Financial Officer, spent several weeks trying a congressional plan to repeal section 14 (c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act to ascertain whether there was any way Lifespire could afford to give a wins approval. permanent pay increase to staff. In February we were told that due to this shortfall the Voluntary Sector would have to absorb a cut of Employees Who Have Gone $120 million dollars. Through the efforts of parents, staff, and the individuals we serve, the legislature restored $30 million but this still left a hole of $90 million. “Above and Beyond” This “revised” budget will clearly have an impact on the amount of revenue Lifespire will receive from OPWDD and I strongly considered the possibility of withdrawing our financial proposal. After much thought and several discussions with senior Lifespire management, I concluded that staff deserved a raise and that we would do whatever it took to find a way to keep the permanent increases as part of the ‘deal” even though I knew we would receive less money. I am pleased to say that the members of CSEA overwhelmingly voted to approve the three-year contract, and Lifespire and CSEA officially signed the new contract on Monday, April 6th, 2013. I want to personally thank the members of CSEA’s negotiating team as Every quarter, Lifespire honors exceptional staff who have contributed well as the Lifespire team. Lifespire’s 13th Annual Golf Classic to be held June 6, 2013 at the prestigious Cold Spring Country Club Lifespire’s largest fundraising event, the 13th Annual Golf Classic, will be held on Thursday, June 6, at the prestigious Cold Spring Country Club in Huntington, NY. This year Lifespire will be honoring two very special individuals for their care, support and dedication in helping Lifespire improve the lives of others; Barbara Lehrer, founder and president of The Beacon Group and Phoebe Cates Kline, founder and owner of Blue Tree. Barbara Lehrer, founder and president of The Beacon Group human resources management firm, will be honored for her work over the years in providing dedicated speech pathologists, nurses, social workers and other clinicians to Lifespire and similar organizations who serve and enhance the lives of the differently abled. “It is a tremendous honor,” states Lehrer, “as well as a nice surprise as there are many others who could have been recognized. It has been my privilege to provide staff to Lifespire’s many programs and services for the past ten years. I admire and share their passion for helping those with special needs and look forwarding to working with Lifespire for a long time.” Phoebe Cates Kline was born and raised in New York City. She attended the Professional Children’s School when she started modeling and acting in 10th grade. She is best known for her roles in the Gremlins movies, Fast Times At Ridgemont High and the ABC mini series, Lace. She is married to actor Kevin Kline and has two children: Owen, who is 21 and Greta, who is 19. She opened a boutique, Blue Tree, in the Upper East Side in 2005. Blue Tree is part of Lifespire’s Supportive Employment program. She is honored to be joining us at the 2013 Golf Outing and is proud to be part of the Lifespire Family! About the Day… This year marks the first time that the Golf Classic will be held at the renowned Cold Spring County Club, with its Seth Raynor-designed course, European-style clubhouse, and the stunning Oheka Castle as a backdrop. Legend has it that financier Otto Kahn, who built the property in 1919, would install deep sand traps precisely at the spots where his guests’ golf shots landed most frequently. The event begins at 10:00am with brunch and warm-up, followed by a 40-minute show of golf tricks, tips, and witticisms by noted golfer and entertainer Dan Boever. There will be tournament contests and team competitions for fabulous prizes, including a 50” flat screen TV, iPods, iPhones, golf bags and club sets, and more. Cocktails, dinner and awards begin at 4:30pm and all attendees receive welcome gifts. The event is sponsored by The Beacon Group, SheppardMullin, Burke Supply, Trooper Foods, and The Signature Group of Companies, who have all generously donated funds and prizes. • Bamcinématek Presents Joe Dante at the Movies, 18 Days of 40 Genre-Busting Films, Aug 5—24
BAMcinématek presents Joe Dante at the Movies, 18 days of 40 genre-busting films, Aug 5—24 “One of the undisputed masters of modern genre cinema.” —Tom Huddleston, Time Out London Dante to appear in person at select screenings Aug 5—Aug 7 The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Jul 18, 2016/Brooklyn, NY—From Friday, August 5, through Wednesday, August 24, BAMcinématek presents Joe Dante at the Movies, a sprawling collection of Dante’s essential film and television work along with offbeat favorites hand-picked by the director. Additionally, Dante will appear in person at the August 5 screening of Gremlins (1984), August 6 screening of Matinee (1990), and the August 7 free screening of rarely seen The Movie Orgy (1968). Original and unapologetically entertaining, the films of Joe Dante both celebrate and skewer American culture. Dante got his start working for Roger Corman, and an appreciation for unpretentious, low-budget ingenuity runs throughout his films. The series kicks off with the essential box-office sensation Gremlins (1984—Aug 5, 8 & 20), with Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. Billy (Galligan) finds out the hard way what happens when you feed a Mogwai after midnight and mini terrors take over his all-American town. Continuing the necessary viewing is the “uninhibited and uproarious monster bash,” (Michael Sragow, New Yorker) Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990—Aug 6 & 20). Dante’s sequel to his commercial hit plays like a spoof of the original, with occasional bursts of horror and celebrity cameos. In The Howling (1981), a news anchor finds herself the target of a shape-shifting serial killer in Dante’s take on the werewolf genre.

  • Film Flashback… Ghostbusters & Gremlins Opened
Monday, June 7, 2021 | No. 171 Film Flashback… Ghostbusters & Gremlins Opened on 6/8/1984 Weekends with two major openings that aren't targeted to the same audience typically boost box office business – as we just saw Memorial Day weekend. There was, however, a time when studios didn't always avoid going head-to-head with the wrong films. The classic example of what not to do occurred June 8, 1984 when Columbia opened Ivan Reitman's action fantasy GHOSTBUSTERS and Warner Bros. launched Joe Dante's action fantasy GREMLINS. Both were going to play best to younger males. Both studios wanted to kick-off that weekend because in those days early June was when most schools had just closed for the summer, so younger males were now able to see movies all week long. GHOSTBUSTERS looked the strongest. Reitman had already directed hit comedies like MEATBALLS (1979 - $43M) & STRIPES (1981 - $85M). His new film had big star power – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd & Sigourney Weaver. GREMLINS' Joe Dante hadn't directed any big hits yet but had gotten lots of attention with his werewolf film THE HOWLING (1981 - $18M). Stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates & Hoyt Axton weren't as well-known as GHOSTBUSTERS' star trio. GREMLINS did have some significant star power behind the camera in executive producer Steven Spielberg, whose Gremlins opened on 6/8/1984, INDIANA JONES & THE TEMPLE OF DOOM had just opened Memorial Day weekend to Directed by Joe Dante and Executive $42.3M and would do $333M worldwide. Despite industry speculation that one title might Produced by Steven Spielberg move, both studios stayed the course.

BAMcinématek goes Home for the Holidays— a seven-film series of not-so-festive auteurist Christmases, Dec 15—20 Opens with a new DCP remaster of Joe Dante’s Gremlins; all other features in 35mm The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Nov 30, 2012—BAMcinématek closes its calendar year with Home for the Holidays (Dec 15—20), a seven-film series of not-so-festive auteurist Christmas fare through the lenses of Minnelli, Huston, Kubrick, Waters, Dante, avant-garde master Jerome Hill, and a guy named Theodore. The series opens with Joe Dante’s Gremlins (1984—Dec 15) in a DCP remaster; unfortunately, all extant 35mm prints at the Warner Bros. archive were eaten by Gremlins shortly after their projection booth rampage. In Dante’s inspired It’s a Wonderful Life-parody-cum-monster movie, chaos gleefully reigns over Christmas in the little town of Kingston Falls. When Billy Peltzer breaks the rules in caring for his furry pet mogwai Gizmo (voiced by mysophobic comedian-turned- game show host Howie Mandel), he adds insult to injury for his grinchy girlfriend, played by Phoebe Cates (“you say you hate Christmas and people treat you like a leper”). Gremlins is chock-full of cameos including Steven Spielberg, Robby the Robot, Chuck Jones, and Red Skelton. In Vincente Minnelli’s beloved Meet Me in St. Louis (1944—Dec 16), the mounting tension in the Smith family culminates with tiny terror Margaret O’Brien decapitating her father’s snowman stand-in on the front lawn, but Judy Garland manages to

  • Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES Based on true events, WHITE BOY RICK is set in 1980s Detroit at the height of the crack epidemic and the war on drugs, in a city rife with corruption on every level. WHITE BOY RICK tells the moving story of a blue-collar father, Richard Wershe Sr. and his namesake teenage son, Rick Jr. In a mind-boggling series of events, Rick Jr. enters into a Faustian bargain, becoming an undercover informant and later a drug dealer, manipulated by the very system meant to protect him only to be abandoned by his police handlers and sentenced to life in prison. This incredible story of the youngest FBI informant in history is inextricably bound to a turbulent, complicated father-son relationship. Richard Sr., equal parts hustler, schemer and dreamer, is doing the best he can to stop the cycle of generational poverty and despair, driven by a sincere love of his kids. His son Rick Jr., caught up in his father’s aspirations, willingly becomes the means by which to achieve his father’s ambitions. But all the while, Richard Sr. also attempts to hold their tenuous and fractured family together – both father and son are ultimately motivated by the love of each other and their family. Their city and government betray them - the institutional injustice and corruption that defined Detroit, the home they loved, would be their undoing. WHITE BOY RICK is a tarnished American Dream, an improbable tale of fathers and sons, friends and family, a shifting landscape of loyalty and betrayal, where everything has a cost, including love and the ultimate price may be survival.
