Long ago on another world, Red and Blue warriors fought continuously, caught in a stalemate. For the sake of settling their dispute, a neutral party named the Moderators intervened in the conflict to minimise the casualties and collateral. They decided to have select champions fight instead. These champions would be imbued with power, and set against each other. The winner of those champions would be the winner of the war. Additionally, to make sure it was fair and neutral, these champions would be selected from another unrelated race. They chose humanity. Now these Kämpfer’s clash in the shadows, unknown to the rest of humanity. In a few short days Natsuru, a normal boy who attends a school physically split in half according to gender, will find himself transformed into a Kämpfer. He is rightly shocked, as unfortunately for him Kämpfers are female. Luckily he is able to transform back, which lasts up until the next day when a gun held by another Kämpfer is rather rudely put against his head. And so the story begins. Have 1000CP to spend on the options below. Origins: You can choose your gender for free. Roll 1d3+15 for your age. Student You will be starting off this jump as an ordinary student. There is little innately special about you, beyond the norm. You have a roof over your head, 3 meals a day, and a family that may or may not be still living in the same house as you. All in all, you are perfectly set to have a relaxing decade if you wished.

  • Purpose and Process in Teaching Literature Gregory Grene Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requiremen
Readings of Reading: Purpose and Process in Teaching Literature Gregory Grene Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2021 © 2020 Gregory Grene All Rights Reserved Abstract Readings of Reading: Purpose and Process in Teaching Literature Gregory Grene What do we hope to teach in teaching literature, and how can we best serve that purpose? These are questions that are no less urgent than they are fundamental, and should, in fact, be constantly in our minds as we engage in our practice. This discussion will entail a conversation between the theories behind, and the process of, teaching literature to adolescents, with a series of observations and thoughts rooted in specific texts and classes. I will start by querying how we define our mission, and then situate this debate in its historical context. I will look at how current influences are affecting this mission, before examining in a more granular sense how we attempt to trace progress and process. I will root this discussion in both theory and practice, utilizing my own teaching and extant student artifacts. I will argue that the elliptical nature of the process means that our assessment must be multifaceted, and that a mirror elliptical approach on our end can yield richer understandings, for both teacher and students. wag (n): 1. ‘Any one ludicrously mischievous; a merry droll’; a habitual joker. 2. A web-based literary magazine (from portmanteau of “web mag” or “web magazine”). revue (n): 1. An elaborate musical show consisting of numerous unrelated scenes; also, the genre of such entertainments. Times of London 4 Apr 1899: “a specimen of this class of piece has to be called a revue and announced as an ‘entirely new form’. ” Issue 1 Spring 2009 FROM THE EDITORS Image courtesy of Julia McKinley http://jtmckinleyphoto.blogspot.com/ MANIFESTO Think of the internet as a literal place, a newly-conquered frontier. It’s a familiar comparison: the pioneering switch-circuit supernerds of ARPANET; the trailblazing explorers of Usenet and Mosaic; the waves of immigrants, establishing Geocities, getting to know their AOL postman by his ubiquitous catchphrase. Now Google’s twelve- lane freeways roar across the Web, Facebook and YouTube are visible from space. Unfortunately, as with most frontiers, the development of the Web has brought with it the swift and ruthless execution of native populations. The old empires of printed media are undergoing a greater crisis than ever before, one from which they will never fully recover. They have succumbed to the pox of internet expansion. These wrongs must be redressed, not by retrenching ourselves in the printed medium, but by salvaging what its best citizens stood for. We cannot mistake the decline of the printed form for the death of quality writing and content. The need for literature and letters to be reliably and intelligently disseminated exists now as it always has.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE Collaborative Aesthetics and the Politics of Trans-Subjectivity A Dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature by April Louise Durham August 2013 Dissertation Committee: Dr. James S. Tobias, Co-Chairperson Dr. Marguerite Waller, Co-Chairperson Dr. Sabine Doran Dr. Jeffrey Sacks Copyright by April Louise Durham 2013 The Dissertation of April Louise Durham is approved: Committee Co-Chairperson Committee Co-Chairperson University of California, Riverside Acknowledgments In a project on collaboration, there are necessarily many, many people who inspire, contribute, and commingle and whose contributions are felt on every page of this long consideration. I list a few of them here: Damien Airault, Patrick Bernier, Juliet Conlon, Dessislava Dimova, Nico Dockx, Christie Frields, Christine Laquet, Olive Martin, Michelle Naismith, Douglas Park, Merryn Singer, Sharon Suhovy. These artists and curators and writers and organizers have all interrupted a confined sense of myself that I held dear at some point or other. The disruptions have been beautiful, terrifying, and ultimately transformational. I have had so many lovely, engaging, and rigorous conversations with my academic colleagues at UCR including Tanya Rawal with her conviction that she needs to change the world, and Kimberly Hall whose graciousness and unflagging energy have inspired me again and again. Others include Michael Podolny, Edward Troy, Richard Hunt, and Regina Yung-Lee. In addition to long-term and short-term commitments to shared creative and scholarly practice, some others have willingly stepped into the void, repeatedly, with me. Linda Parnell has shared her strange and persistent curiosity and wandered in the desert with me for these many years, even when our paths were slightly different.
