Our View bread rises, boro grows

The new word from the grape vine is that the little old town of Statesboro is getting a new, yet very well known, bakery-cafe — Panera Bread. Of course, not everyone is a fan of bakeries, or cafes, but the company’s interest in Statesboro is a large step forward — a step toward city development. It is clear that Statesboro is a college-oriented town, though there are those who would like to dispute this. We are aware that there is not much strength at times in the bond that us college students and the local people share. But from our point of view, Statesboro — at some point — will need to catch up with the times. The more businesses that come here, the more we will definitely take to a more modern, urbanized Statesboro. In the past, the City of Statesboro has asked several grocery store chains such as Kroger and Publix to come into the town. However, due to the fact we are such a small town, the chains declined to build out of fear of competition. With so few people in comparison to other counties, there wouldn’t be enough customers for every store, and someone would eventually go out Marcus Barkley/STAFF of business — especially with Wal-Mart already in existence. A similar occurrence happened when the competing banks were asked to plant their chains in Statesboro soil.
