Our gratitude goes to so many for their painstaking work in compiling the material, most notably Ken Booth and Margaret Wood. Their investment in this project has been immense from the outset, as Ken’s introduction illustrates. a) Each commemoration includes a short biographical section, a “liturgical paragraph” suitable to be read out at a service, and the suggested Sentences, Prayers, and Readings for liturgical use. b) The Māori material was made available to the appropriate people in the respective tribal areas and not only were they checked by them but their approval was sought and obtained. The material may be the most straightforward source of information about both Māori and other commemorations from Aotearoa / New Zealand and the Pacific. c) The book effectively replaces The New Zealand Calendar 1980 in relation to the sections called (i) Saints’ Days and Other Commemorations (updated to fit the Calendar / Te Maramataka of A New Zealand Prayer Book – He Karakia Mihinare o Aotearoa, (ii) Sentences, Prayers and Readings for Other Special Days (updated to reflect the Prayer Book, page 13, these are formularies), and (iii) Sentences, Prayers and Readings for Various Occasions (see The New Zealand Calendar, pages 54-63, 90). For useful resources to replace the weekday and seasonal sections for Advent, Lent, and Eastertide from The New Zealand Calendar (pages 64-89), refer Ken Booth’s Advent to Easter (1992), The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia Liturgical Commission’s publication, From Ashes to Fire (1990), or other Anglican or ecumenical resources. -

“The Dio Difference” Social Class and Anglican Girls’ Secondary Schools in Aotearoa New Zealand, 1877-1975 By Bethany Swanson A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Victoria University of Wellington 2021 Abstract This study examines the histories of Anglican girls’ secondary schools from 1877-1975, placing them within a social class setting. This thesis argues that these schools, despite the diversity of their location and the dates of their founding, existed largely to educate the daughters of Aotearoa New Zealand’s ruling class. The ruling class can be defined as an active class made up of social elites, who were influential in society and possessed economic, social and cultural capital. This capital appears in the form of the ability to set an agenda in civic society, as membership in networks, and as the possession of a formal education. The Anglican girls’ private schools were a means through which this class replicated itself. The Anglican church possessed many such influential members of society and was driven, on a diocesan level, to establish private schools for girls in defence of a curriculum which included religious education. The schools in this study were all founded between 1878 and 1918 and remain in existence today. Over their lifetimes they have remained exclusively girls’ schools, with a mix of day- students and boarders. The thesis uses data collected from school archives, libraries, and school histories as well as a wider literature on education and class theory in order to situate the schools firmly within a class analysis. -

THE LECTIONARY TE MARAMATAKA 2014 THE ANGLICAN CHURCH IN AOTEAROA, NEW ZEALAND AND POLYNESIA TE HĀHI MIHINARE KI AOTEAROA KI NIU TIRENI KI NGĀ MOUTERE O TE MOANA NUI A KIWA THE MARSDEN CROSS The photo on the title page features the Marsden Cross at Oihi Bay in the Bay of Islands on Christmas Day 1964, during a service marking the sesqui-centenary of the arrival of Samuel Marsden and the CMS missionaries in 1814. Archives, Anglican Diocese of Auckland On Christmas Day 2014 we commemorate the 200th anniversary of this service. The Marsden Cross, unveiled in 1907 by the Governor General, Lord Plunket, is a large Celtic stone cross which carries the inscription: ‘On Christmas Day, 1814 the first Christian Service in N.Z. was held on this spot by the Rev. Samuel Marsden’. Although Christian services were held in New Zealand before this date, the significance of this service was that it took place on land and included both Māori and Pākehā in the congregation. It also marked the inauguration of missionary work in New Zealand and the beginnings of Christianity in New Zealand in a permanent form. The erection of the “Marsden Cross” was originally suggested by Dr John Kinder. The cross was designed by the Ven. Philip Walsh, Archdeacon of Waimate (1901-12), who was a noted amateur artist and architectural draftsman who designed several churches. The Marsden Cross not only marks the area where the congregation gathered on Christmas Day 1814 to take part in worship but also the land where the first missionary settlement was erected. -
