Unshakeable. Our cameras are used in all sorts of noisy, shaky environments. But we’re not worried. That’s because we’ve already subjected them to over one million cycles of very high vibrations and hundreds of shocks. We try to keep them away from jackhammers though.

It’s just one of the tough tests Axis cameras face, so you can be sure you’ll always get the best image quality and high performance – no matter where you install them.

Without having some way to alert store managers about areas that may be understaffed, customers could become impatient and walk away, which results in a loss of sales—not just of one item, but potentially of a whole basket. In addition to the growing popularity of analytics and business intelligence features provided by video surveillance, the industry is continually moving to- ward increased integration of different technologies and systems in retail environments. Historically, store POS, access control and video platforms all operated within their own silos, but more retailers have started to realize the benefits that can be realized by tying these disparate systems together.

It has been proven that without significant modi- fications, standard chain link products can be easily breached in a matter of seconds by pulling up on the mesh and passing beneath it or by snipping and unwinding one of the coils and pass- ing through the impending opening. The ease in which this is accomplished diminishes the legitimacy of low-cost chain link fencing for consideration as a secure perimeter defense solution. Since, it is apparent most high-secu- rity facilities require some sort of phys- ical perimeter barrier system to control the access or lengthen the delay time required for forced entry, many orga- nizations have moved away from chain link products and are now using com- binations of welded wire, expanded metal and louvered panels, all offering much longer delay times and requiring significantly more sophisticated means of forced entry. As perimeter protection solutions became more advanced and made with stronger steel and thicker gauges, the support posts and structural founda- tions also need to be sturdier and better engineered to support the additional weight and wind loads. Planning a fa- cility’s perimeter security requires time, effort, and adequate funding. Security professionals should always assess a provider’s products, scope capability, financial health, references, and qual- ity systems. Wire mesh products should be tested for tensile strengths whether used in chain link or woven meshes, along with strength tests of the welds used in welded wire mesh panels. SECURING THE GLASS ENTRANCE Wireless reader plays significant role in company security By Wendy Bowman dramatic entryway makes a brand’s first impression and sets the tone for visiting customers and staff. As a high-tech IT company that offers intelligent network secu- rity solutions, Axis Communications desired a crisp, clean feeling, achieved by installing a 30 foot glass entryway at their new Axis AExperience Center (AEC) in Chicago. This dramatic exterior front entrance also required an equally impressive access control solution. Adding access control to any glass door can be a challenge, especially when try- ing to maintain an uncluttered appearance. Conventional technology requires run- ning wires through the building perimeter wall, trenching and burying wire, and then running it into a pedestal. However, strict Chicago building codes require that cable must be contained in conduit, which adds ex.pense and results in a messy and chaotic look, especially in the case of a glass entrance. A custom pedestal drilled into the exterior marble floor for a mounted card reader would have ruined the clean look and added an astronomical cost which the building management com- pany wouldn’t approve. A more innovative solution was required.

GOING WIRELESS In addition to the aesthetic and cost challenges, Axis required a scalable system that would ensure data security and could enroll its 1,600 global employees using their existing HID iClass credentials. Working together on a solution, HID recom- mended the Securitron R100, a small surface mounted wireless reader powered by Aperio technology. The R100 supports HID credentials and can communicate with an existing access control system through the Aperio wireless hub, allowing a seamless integration. The Aperio hub features an open architecture with simple Wiegand connection that in this case allowed it to directly interface with the AXIS A1001 Network Door Controller by Axis Com.munications without any modifications; and with fully encrypted AES128 wireless communication between the R100 and Aperio hub, Axis could be certain that its data was protected. Installation was quick and easy. In less than a minute, the R100 was mounted on the glass wall, ready to connect. The Aperio hub was wired into the access con- trol system and installed out of sight in the drop ceiling. By deploying PoE, AXIS A1001, Axis reduced the need, and cost, for separate power and proprietary data cables. In 30 minutes, the reader was up and running without a hitch.

SAVING TIME AND MONEY By eliminating the need for drilling through the perimeter wall, custom pedes- tals and running wires to the door, Axis not only saved time and money by choosing the Securitron R100, but also completed a stunning entrance renovation and implemented a reliable access control security solution.

D2R systems can have a range of additional features. For example, some are wired and some are wireless. Let’s focus solely on the D2R angle, because that is the key differentiator among the panic alarm systems currently available. An incident a few years ago in Van Buren, Ark. vividly illustrates how and why D2R systems work better than systems that communicate to 9-1-1 operators or a call center. On the afternoon of Sept. 14, 2011, James Ray Palmer, seemingly angry at the world, but especially at the Crawford County circuit judge who presided over his divorce and child custody hearings in 2001, rode his motorcycle to the Crawford County Courthouse in Van Buren. Palmer, 48, wearing a long trench coat in 90-plus degree heat, walked into the front entrance of the main Courthouse. He headed directly to the second-floor of- fice of the Division 1 Circuit Judge Gary Cottrell. Beneath the trench coat he was wearing tactical gear and carried three semi- automatic weapons, including an assault rifle. At the judge’s office, the secretary told Palmer that the judge was out sick that day (nursing a knee injury). Not satisfied with the response, Palmer shot the judge’s case coordinator in the leg. The secretary was able to escape to another office. He then walked through the courthouse and fired about 16 additional rounds— shooting that continued for about eight minutes, including shots into historic pho- tographs, walls and doors. The secretary in Judge Cottrell’s office was the first to hit the panic button of the D2R system. She and other workers called 911 on their mobile phones. Unfor- tunately, the cell phone network routed those emergency calls to the operators in adjacent Sebastian County. Capelli large corrections campus, encompassing more than 30 buildings in the southeast United States, houses approximately 5,000 inmates with separate jail facilities for men and women who are awaiting sentencing, serving sentenced jail time and are in maximum security. Correctional institutions require extremely reliable and robust securityA systems to ensure the safety and security of both personnel and inmates. The linear design of the jails at this facility requires inmates to be moved between locations—including cell blocks, meal areas, recreation and visitation—individu- ally, in small groups or via mass movement. The correctional facility’s 20-year-old door control system was made up of out- dated PLC controls and old relays with old wiring to control secure doors and mantraps. A massive upgrade was required to enhance and provide state-of-the-art security technology using high-quality, reliable door control systems. The unique challenge was to maintain maximum security during the technology system up- grade. Additionally, new maintenance policies and procedures needed to be imple- mented to sustain security and guarantee stability. Essentially, hidden objects are “imprinted” on the subject’s cloth- ing by differential cooling. Since IR light doesn’t pass through clothing, privacy issues are nonexistent, so employees won’t be faced with the issues that airport screeners have struggled with. (Remember the “naked” TSA scans?) The key here is that clothing appears opaque to IR technology. “Organizations today—whether they are a retail distribution center, a health- care facility or an airport—face a host of challenges from a threat and security standpoint,” said Bill Gately, CEO, ISCON Imaging. “This technology was cre- ated to help address the following key challenges: how to improve loss prevention and ensure employee safety while respecting an individual’s privacy and avoiding the introduction of health concerns.” There are two distinct platforms for this patented IR technology: SecureScan and FocusScan. SecureScan provides operators with whole-body scans that let them see objects concealed under clothing. It is a fully automated system that displays an image that is time and date stamped. FocusScan is a handheld plat- form that provides targeted screening in a portable and more convenient product. FocusScan features an embedded metal detector, so it can be used as a multi-mode oday’s retail and distribution centers face a growing number of risks that integrated security system.
