  • Historic Context
Historic context Historical context Development of the site over time The proposals provide an opportunity to enhance the character and appearance of the area, and to preserve important views along Borough High Street. This area has experienced significant change over time, with particularly dramatic periods of development following the Great Fire of Southwark in 1676, the foundation of Guy’s Hospital in 1721, and the arrival of the railway at London Bridge in 1836. Today, the area’s rich history is poorly represented on this site by a collection of later buildings, most of which have no heritage value. In bringing forward these proposals, we are seeking to: • Reinforce the historic urban grain, creating a series of intimate and attractive spaces enclosed by architecture of the highest quality • Offer a considered and contextual response to the area’s established built form and palette of materials • Preserve the setting of the Grade I listed George Inn • Enhance public views through Borough High Street Conservation Area; including glimpsed views through the site The scheme has been informed by a detailed historical appraisal to ensure the proposals relate successfully to the historic environment and preserve the setting of heritage assets in the surrounding area. • Southwark Labour Group of Councillors and Its Representatives from Across Southwark
Local Government Boundary Commission for England Electoral Review of Southwark Council Southwark Group of Labour Councillors Submission November 2015 1 Introduction The Labour Party in Southwark welcomes the Local Government Boundary Commission for England’s review of the warding arrangements in Southwark and their decision that Southwark Council should retain 63 Members for future elections. We now welcome the opportunity to submit evidence to the Commission. Labour has 48 of the 63 councillors on Southwark Council, holds all three parliamentary seats and the GLA seat. This document sets out the thinking of the Southwark Labour Group of Councillors and its representatives from across Southwark. We have used our knowledge of working in communities in every part of the borough to set out our proposals for warding patterns and the communities which make up the details of this proposal. In this paper we set out our joint approach, how that meets the criteria set out in law and information to support these claims. We are very happy to discuss the details of this further with the Commission or provide any additional information that is required. 2 Our approach The Commission set out three statutory criteria to the Council’s Chief Executive in their letter of 8 September 2015. 1. To deliver electoral equality where each councillor represents roughly the same number of electors as others across the borough. The LGBCE’s letter to the Chief Executive agrees the council’s own recommendation that the authority retains its current 63 members. The projected electorate figures mean that each councillor would represent 3,862 electors on average in 2021.

  • Southwark Cathedral the Parish and Social Mission
Southwark Cathedral The parish and social mission January 2013 Catriona Robertson www.catrionarobertson.wordpress.com “Christianity has always been embodied on the streets, in the public square, and in living rooms. And so it matters where we live, where we shop, the neighborhood parks where we spend our free time, it all matters not just practically but theologically. Simply put, how can we love our neighbors as ourselves if we don't know who they are and what they do? . our lives are not lived out in general and generic places. We live in specific places and those places force us to ask questions and ignore others. Our place offers us alternative hopes for our world, for our future and we have to decide if we buy into them or not. Place really matters.” Acknowledgements This study would not have been possible without the thoughtful and generous input of many parishioners and others who care about the area: vox pops on the street turned into fascinating conversations; community activists and professionals offered their time, experience and expertise; members of the Cathedral congregation shared their hopes and ideas; and local shopkeepers, businesses and public agencies offered pragmatic advice. Thank you everyone for your patience, curiosity and lively engagement with a wide range of possibilities. In particular, I would like to thank the Dean and Sub Dean of the Cathedral for their invaluable support, the Appeal Director, Kenneth McLean, the Cathedral’s Works 2 Manager, Robert Darling, and Southwark Pastoral Auxiliary, Marion Marples.

Fuller, Heather From: Fuller, Heather Sent: 17 November 2015 08:50 To: Ward, Lucy Subject: FW: Southwark ward boundary review Follow Up Flag: Follow up Flag Status: Flagged Categories: In progress From: Roger Giess [mailto Sent: 16 November 2015 20:27 To: reviews <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Southwark ward boundary review Further to my earlier email, I need to correct a slight error in our submission over the intended boundary between the proposed North Walworth and Burgess Park wards. The part of FAR1 that is to be placed in our proposed Burgess Park was incorrectly described. A further 451 electors should have been included with the 625 placed in a ward with FAR2,3 and 4. These are electors living south of a line from Walworth Road through the centre of Liverpool Grove then through Faraday Gardens to Portland Street. This combined area of 1,076 electors is the Church Commissioners' Walworth Estate which we would not want to split. We are proposing to balance this by switching from Burgess Park to North Walworth the 509 current electors in EWL4 at addresses north west of a line from Old Kent Road through the middle of Surrey Square to the western end of the polling district. This confirms our intention that East street should be within a single ward, North Walworth. Apologies for our error and the confusion. BANKSIDE, BOROUGH & LONDON BRIDGE CHARACTERISATION STUDY TRINITY AND TABARD ADDENDUM, JANUARY 2014 3.10 TRINITY AND TABARD 3.10.1 Location and Summary The area is located to north-east of Elephant and Castle, south of Long Lane and north of New Kent Road and Abbey Street, which joins Long Lane at the north-east corner. Great Dover Street, which divides the area on a broadly north-west, south-east axis, was laid out as a turnpike in the 1750s. The parallel Tabard Street formalised the line of earlier Roman Watling Street. Development within the majority of the area is the result of slum clearance in the early 20th century and further redevelopment following significant bomb damage during WWII. As a result, extensive housing estates, which removed parts of the earlier street pattern, fill much of the area. In contrast, the Trinity Church Square Conservation area contains fine examples of late Georgian townhouses and garden squares.
