s the Society enters the New Year we would value the continued prayers of the Lord’s people for His blessing to attend our work of publishing AAProtestant or uncorrupted versions of the Word of God among all nations. The need throughout the world is very great; the day in which we live is spiritually dark; those engaged in the work are few; the powers of the enemy are mighty; but (blessed be His Name) the Lord our God is the Triune Jehovah, the Almighty LORD of Hosts. He, who yet sits King on the holy hill of Zion, is the Redeemer, the second Person of the glorious Trinity, the Lord Jesus Christ. Unto Him has been given all power in heaven and earth, and He will yet get all praise and glory unto His Name through the furtherance of His Kingdom here in this world.

It is regrettably true that there are very few institutions in the world engaged in the work of Bible publication, that are still both Protestant and evangelical. This was the Society’s stand in 1831. It is our stand in 2003. With the Lord’s will be held, God willing, on blessing we shall endeavour to pursue our work and witness in humble dependence upon the Lord, whose Divine Word it is our privilege to publish and distribute. Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. (Psalm 119.18) Open n some editions of the German Bible, Psalm 119 has the impressive title, “The Christian’s golden ABC of Ithe praise and love, of the power and profit, of the Word of God”. This is a fitting description of a psalm so full of devotion to the living God, Who has revealed His precious love and sacred will in His eternal Word and Testimony. Each verse of this inspired song speaks of the Thou excellency of the Word of God.

The psalm is comprised of twenty-two parts, each of which has eight verses. The eight verses in each part begin with the same Hebrew letter. These letters follow the order Mine of the Hebrew alphabet. The psalmist made the Law of God the governing prin- ciple of his conduct. He surrendered his whole life to the perfect will of God. In trying circumstances, he trusted in Eyes the abiding love and faithfulness of the God of his life. In communion with the Lord, he obtained rich and practical insights into the Word of God.

Yet the psalmist did not rest in his spiritual attain- ments. He urgently pleaded with the Lord for the enlightening grace of the Holy Spirit, so that he would understand the wondrous truths of God’s Word. The prayer in the eighteenth verse, “Open thou mine eyes”, is an acknowledgement of the necessity of divine teaching.
