El asombro ante los muros de piedra en seco, ante las barracas, o ante los paisajes construidos, ha surgido en los últimos años, de forma simultá- nea, en diferentes países, entre investigadores sin comunicación entre sí. Los congresos internacionales de Piedra en Seco han permitido intercambiar experiencias, aglutinar intereses y dar a conocer paisajes y arquitecturas olvidadas. Bari, Italia (1988); Barcelona, España (1990); Anogia, Creta, Grecia (1992); Mallorca, España (1994); Pontedassio-Coldinava, Imperia, Italia (1996) y Carcés-le Val, Var, Francia (1998), han sido otros hitos que han permitido el intercambio de conocimientos de investigadores llegados de un amplio abanico geográ- fico que va desde Israel hasta EE.UU. y desde Argelia hasta Alemania. Las instituciones que han colaborado para poner en marcha estos congresos son muy diversas: la Universidad de Bari, la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (Barcelona), el secretariado de I.M.P. Creta (Anogia), Fodesma (Mallorca), EN AIP Coldinava (Pontedassio-Coldinava) y ASER du Centre-Var (Carcés-le Val). Para coordinar estos eventos hace unos años se fundó la Société Scientifique pour l’étude de Pierre Sèche (S.P.S.) Siguiendo los pasos de los anteriores congresos, el Centro de Estudios del Maestrazgo, con el soporte del Master de Conservación de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, el Forum UNESCO, la Generalidad Valenciana y la Diputación de Castellón, organizó el congreso del año 2000 en Peñíscola, en la Comunidad Valenciana, España. Je tiens également à exprimer mes remerciements à Christian Lassure, fondateur et président du Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches sur l’Architecture, à l’association de construction et de restauration en pierre sèche Pierres d’Iris, aux propriétaires des parcelles étudiées, et aux « anciens » de Villeveyrac et Saint-Pargoire, pour leurs réponses à mes nombreuses questions. 2 AVANT-PROPOS Une première hypothèse pour un sujet de mémoire fut l’évocation d’une étude locale sur l’architecture de l’Abbaye cistercienne de Valmagne, - un exemple de ce qu’il est commun d’appeler la « grande architecture » -. Toutefois, lors de prospections aux alentours de cette abbaye, - que l’on appelle aussi « cathédrale des vignes » -, se mit rapidement en place le projet de s’intéresser à une autre forme d’architecture, certes tout aussi locale, mais néanmoins peu connue, plus modeste, dite « mineure », mais qui semblait pourtant tout aussi digne d’intérêt : l’architecture des « cabanes des vignes », ou cabanes en pierre sèche, environnant la dite abbaye.

Christian Lassure informs me the walls are of stones laid with earth mortar. The stone tile roofs have been restored by a Association Cerrig Sychion professional roofer over the last 40 years. Well here we are on schedule, wonders will never cease. This issue and the next are on the general theme of structures around the world. A double whammy aimed at September’s International Conference at which Stonechat will be displayed. Several of this edition’s speakers will be presenting STONECHAT papers at the conference (posh talk for giving slide shows), and there are several other contributors new to these pages, in fact everyone except me. Already in for next time we have Dan Snow’s Archers pavilion, Giren, Canadian Cabanes, Fox Traps, Trulli, and a fascinating piece from Prof Juvanec on stone huts south and east of the Mediterranean. With more expected we might have to run to three editions. Don’t think I need to say much more I shall just make way and let you enjoy, what I think is the best edition to date.
