That was CU’s conversion percentage on 3rd-&-4, or 11-of-16, the best percentage on any down other than first in 2017 (which was 79.3, 23-of-29). It was also the best percentage in any situation of 3rd-&-3 or longer since 2010, when the Buffs were 9-of-13 (69.2) on 3rd-&-4; then you have to go back to 2004, when CU was also 9-of-13 on 3rd-&-4. In 2016, CU’s best down with four or more yards to go was on 3rd-&-6 plays, when the Buffs were 9-of-17 (or 52.9 percent). The benchmark in this stat remains in 1989, when the Buffs were 30-of-30 on 3rd-&-1 and didn’t’ miss until the Orange Bowl (which if replay had existed, wouldn’t have happened then, either). TWO SET TO TRANSFER Two players have been granted releases to transfer, sophomore WR Johnny Huntley and senior WR Lee Walker. In Walker’s case, he is graduating this week and can go to any school that offers a major field of study that CU doesn’t offer.     Rick George was named athletic director at the University of Colorado on July 17, 2013, returning to Boulder where he helped play a role in the school’s first and only national championship in football some 23 years earlier. George, 59, came to Colorado from the Texas Rangers baseball club of the American League, where he was named chief operating officer on October 5, 2010 with a promotion to president of business operations in February 2013. He agreed to a 5-year contract at CU, and he officially started on the job on August 12, 2013. In June 2016, the Board of Regents approved a contract extension through 2020-21, and in June 2019, the Regents once again extended him through the 2023-24 academic and athletic year. He is just the sixth full-time athletic director in Colorado history, following in the footsteps of Harry Carlson (1927-65), Eddie Crowder (1965-84), Bill Marolt (1984-96), Dick Tharp (1996- 2004) and Mike Bohn (2005-13). Two others have bridged directors in interim capacities, Jack Lengyel (six months between Tharp and Bohn) and Ceal Barry (two months between Bohn and George). His list of achievements in his first 1,000 days in the position were many, but none more significant than shepherding through a $156 million Athletic Complex Expansion from creation through fruition, gaining approval from the Board of Regents and then raising nearly one-half of the estimated cost to initiate construction, which began May 12, 2014. The project was the core of the Sustainable Excellence Initiative (SEI), the jewel of which was a long-awaited indoor practice facility.

The Walter Camp Coach of the Year is selected by the nation’s 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. Cutcliffe is the first Duke coach to receive the award, and the first honoree from the ACC since 2001 (Ralph Friedgen, Maryland). Under Cutcliffe’s direction, the 20th-ranked Blue Devils have set a school record with 10 victories and earned their first-ever berth in the Dr. Pepper ACC Championship Game. Duke clinched the Coastal Division title and championship game berth with a 27-25 victory over in-state rival North Carolina on November 30. Duke (10-2, 6-2 in the Coastal Division) will face top-ranked Florida State (12-0) on Saturday, December 7 in Charlotte, N.C. The Blue Devils enter the game with an eight-game winning streak – the program’s longest since 1941. In addition, the Blue Devils cracked the BCS standings for the first time this season, and were a perfect 4-0 in the month of November (after going 1-19 in the month from 2008 to 2012). Cutcliffe was hired as Duke’s 21st coach on December 15, 2007. Last season, he led the high- scoring Blue Devils to a school record 410 points (31.5 points per game) and a berth in the Belk Bowl – the program’s first bowl appearance since 1994.

Surely every American knows these two simple rules of conduct: (1) When you are playing football, it's okay to put a hit on a member of the opposing team. It's one of those rare times when hitting someone with the full force of your body weight is not prohibited. And (2) you may never-regardless of your body weight-hit a Justice of the United States Supreme Court, even if he or she is wearing pads. This rule first appeared in one of those "bright line" deci- sions handed down by the Court of Star Chamber during the fourteenth century and has been adopted as common law by every state in the Union but Louisiana.'
