ith India’s expanding infrastructure needs, a strong portfolio of road Wassets and a developed transport infrastructure is one of the key drivers of economic growth. GVK has set off at an accelerated pace in this segment. GVK pioneered the development of an efficient transportation network in India. It has road projects of over 900 lane km in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat under various stages of development besides its 542.4 lane km Jaipur-Kishangarh expressway, India’s first privately operated six-lane highway. GVK has now crossed another significant milestone with the partial commissioning of the 332.16 lane km of the Deoli-Kota Expressway project in Rajasthan. GVK has received a provisional completion certificate as per the provisions of the Concession Agreement. The expressway project is expected to begin full commercial operations soon. The project is located on the National Highway-12 (Jabalpur-Bhopal- Jhalawar-Kota-Bundi-Deoli-Tonk-Jaipur) which is an important link connecting Central India to Northern India. It involves four-laning of the highway starting from km 165 to the junction of NH-76 on Kota Bypass, on the Deoli-Kota Section of NH-12 in Rajasthan on a BOT basis. The project is part of the prestigious National Highways Development Project (Phase III). The expressway project is one of the important corridors of NH-12 and carries a substantial amount of both intra-state and inter-state traffic. Apart from the significant thorough traffic (due to the Central-Northern link), it also caters to induced traffic from the industrial belts in and around Kota - one of the most industrialized belts in Rajasthan. The project has a concession period of 26 years including construction period of 30 months. Almost every aspect of a tunneling project, from its conception to commissioning, is influenced by the geology of the area. Reliability of the predicted geology, therefore, plays an important role in the success of the project. Despite facing numerous challenges, the entire team at the Deoli- Kota project stuck to their task and contributed to the development of the project. It is the entire team’s perseverance and hard work that has helped achieve this significant milestone and treat the challenges faced as opportunities that helped it become even stronger.

July-Sep 2015 27 Project Updates GVK Australia Supreme Court rejects appeals to Alpha Coal Project’s environmental approvals

GVK Hancock has welcomed the Supreme Court judgement rejecting appeals from anti-mining activists to environmental approvals for the Alpha Coal Project. The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal to the previous decision of the Land Court, as well as an appeal to the granting of the Environmental Authority for the proposed Alpha coal mine. This judgement combines the second and third court ruling in favour of our comprehensive suite of environmental assessments for the Alpha Coal Project. This legal challenge was only brought forward by the anti-mining activists. The Court has ruled that the GVK Coal project has continued to follow and comply with all regulatory and legal processes. This is a significant development as it would now help us take the next step towards creating thousands of jobs for the region and the State. The development of the Alpha Coal Project will create 5,000 jobs during around three years of construction and over 2,000 long-term jobs over more than 30 years of operations.
