Dragons Gameday RiverDogs GameDay Wednesday, June 30, 2021 ⚫ Game #48 Atrium Health Ballpark ⚫ Kannapolis, NC ⚫ 7:00 p.m. Broadcast: MiLB.TV and Riverdogs.com Charleston RiverDogs (32-15) at Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (15-33) RHP Taj Bradley (4-3, 2.86) vs. RHP Martin Carrasco (1-2, 7.29) Tonight’s Game: The Charleston RiverDogs (affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) continue a 12-game road trip by visiting the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (affiliate of the Chicago White Sox) for the second game of six at Atrium Health Ballpark. This series represents the first and only meeting of the season between the two teams. RiverDogs-Cannon Ballers Season Series in 2021: Overall: RiverDogs 1, Cannon Ballers 0. At Atrium Health Ballpark: RiverDogs 1, Cannon Ballers 0. Last Time Out: The RiverDogs fell behind just two pitches into the game on Tuesday, but used eight extra-base hits and an eight-run explosion in the sixth inning to defeat Kannapolis 16-10 in the series-opener. Trailing 5-2 entering the sixth inning, the RiverDogs put together their most productive inning of the season in the top of the frame to surge ahead 10-5. Within the inning, eight of the nine players in the lineup either scored or drove in a run, Diego Infante doubled twice and Alika Williams blasted his first career home run. The lead ballooned to 12-5 with Low-A East Standings back-to-back home runs from Nick Schnell and Johan Lopez in the top of the seventh. The Cannon Ballers cut the margin to 12-9 with a four-run bottom of the seventh, but the North Division W-L GB RiverDogs outscored the home team 4-1 over the final two innings to reach the final margin. Delmarva 31-16 -- Salem 27-22 5.0 Awards Season: The RiverDogs swept the weekly honors in the Low-A East last week with Lynchburg 25-22 6.0 Curtis Mead being named Player of the Week for a second straight time and Andrew Gross earning recognition as the circuit’s Pitcher of the Week. The pair have joined John Doxakis, Fredericksburg 14-35 18.0 now at High-A Bowling Green, as RiverDogs to be selected for weekly honors. Mead hit .450 Central Division W-L GB with four doubles and seven RBI in the series against Augusta. Meanwhile, Gross tossed Carolina 28-19 -- 6.0 scoreless innings and allowed just one baserunner in two relief appearances. Down East 28-20 0.5 Series of Successes: The RiverDogs have lost only one of their eight series so far this Fayetteville 18-29 10.0 season. Overall, the team owns a 5-1-2 record in series play. The RiverDogs swept the Kannapolis 15-33 13.5 Fayetteville Woodpeckers and took five of six games in series against Myrtle Beach and Augusta. South Division W-L GB Charleston 32-15 -- Unmatched Artillery: It wouldn’t be crazy to state that the RiverDogs currently have the best Columbia 25-20 6.0 pitching staff in Minor League Baseball. The numbers back it up. The RiverDogs recorded Myrtle Beach 21-27 11.5 their Minor League Baseball-leading ninth shutout of the season on Sunday evening. Only the San Francisco Giants have more among Major and Minor League clubs. In addition, the Augusta 21-27 11.5 RiverDogs have compiled a 3.18 ERA as a team, the third-lowest mark in MiLB. Strikeout City: The RiverDogs pitching staff has thrived in striking out opposing hitters all seas on. Entering play tonight, the RiverDogs trail Augusta by one strikeout for the league lead despite playing one fewer game than the GreenJackets. They lead the league by averaging 11.0 strikeouts per game. Cole Wilcox and Taj Bradley each rank in the top four league-wide with 52 and 50 strikeouts, respectively. That’s Gross: Reliever Andrew Gross allowed three runs in his first appearance of the 2021 season back in May. In his 12 appearances since, he has not allowed another run. After tossing 3.0 perfect innings on Tuesday night, Gross has put together 27.0 consecutive scoreless innings, lowering his earned run average to 0.92. That scoreless innings streak is the longest active streak in MiLB and the second-longest of the season. Ken Waldichuk of Hudson Valley worked 30.2 innings without allowing a run earlier in the season. G’Days Mate: Australian Curtis Mead was named the Low-A East Player of the Week last week for his performance in the series against Myrtle Beach. He has been a problem for opposing pitching staffs all season. After a quiet opening week, the third baseman has registered a hit in 32 of the last 35 games he has played in. Mead is batting .361 over that same span. He leads the league in hits and doubles, second in extra-base hits and total bases, seventh in batting average and ninth in RBI. Prized Pups: The RiverDogs roster contains seven members of MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 Rays prospects. The highest ranked of that group is starting pitcher Cole Wilcox who came in at #9. Outfielder/catcher Heriberto Hernandez is the most highly regarded position player at #13. The rest of the list is filled out by starting pitchers Seth Johnson (#15), Taj Bradley (#21) and Ian Seymour (#22), shortstops Osleivis Basabe (#24) and Alika Williams (#25) and outfielder Nick Schnell (#30). Teves Joseph T. Burchenal Daniel M. Haluska Paul M. Sommers Department of Economics Middlebury College Middlebury, Vermont 05753 [email protected] 3 A POISSON MODEL FOR “HITTING FOR THE CYCLE” IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL In a recent article in this journal [1], Campbell et al. showed that the Poisson probability distribution provides an excellent fit to the data on no-hit games in Major League Baseball, especially during the period 1920-1959. Hitting for the cycle (that is, when a batter hits a single, double, triple and home run in the same game) is another rare event in Major League Baseball.1,2 And, here too, the Poisson probability distribution given by e −μ μ x p(X = x) = , x = 0, 1, 2, … x! where x denotes the number of ballplayers who “hit for the cycle” (hereafter a “cycle”) in a given season provides a remarkably good fit. The number of cycles by league from 1901 through 2007 are shown in Table 1 (see http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/history/rare_feats/index.jsp?feature=hit_for_cycle ). Bob Meusel of the New York Yankees hit for the cycle three times in his career (1921, 1922, and 1928).
