SPAIN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE EXPERIENCE 2017-2018 An immersion program PRESENTATION GOALS Present HHS/HMS 8th Grade Spain Immersion Program What is an immersion experience? • Living with a Spanish host family • Attending Spanish language classes in Spain • Touring and Traveling WHEN? • Hamden Middle School students proposed travel to Spain: April 2018 (Spring Session) • Hamden High School students proposed travel to Spain: End June-Early July 2018 WHO? • HHS/HMS 8th Grade Students • Students in good academic standing • Students with a good discipline record • Students will complete application and 2 teacher recommendations. • 1 Chaperone per 5 students HOW MUCH? Photos CHAPERONE ITINERARY • Meet and debrief with students at the school every morning. • Attend professional development while students are in class. • Chaperone on all excursions. • 24 hour availability WHAT IS INCLUDED? • 20 hours of classes - all materials included • Accommodation with host family in double room, full board for 1 week • Guided tours of Salamanca. • One full day excursion to Avila & Segovia. • Medical insurance • Ground transportation to and from airports. • Cost of all program activities. HOW DOES THIS EXPERIENCE ALIGN TO OUR CURRICULA? • Students will successfully interact in a variety of cultural contexts that reflect both peer-group and adult activities within the target culture, using the appropriate verbal and nonverbal cues • Students will communicate with members of the target culture and interpret information regarding topics of personal, community, or world interest • Students will use new information and perspectives gained through world language study to expand their personal knowledge • Students will analyze how other cultures view the role of the United States in the world arena • Students will use new information and perspectives to demonstrate understanding of the similarities and differences among other cultures and their own culture.
