Ten species are recorded with certainty from this Archipelago, of which 6 namely, Trogoxylon impressum (Comolli, 1837), Amphicerus bimaculatus (A.G. Olivier, 1790), Heterobostrychus aequalis (Waterhouse, 1884), Sinoxylon unidentatum (Fabricius, 1801), Xyloperthella picea (A.G. Olivier, 1790) and Apate monachus Fabricius, 1775 are recorded for the first time. Two of the mentioned species (H. aequalis and S. unidentatum) are alien and recorded only on the basis of single captures and the possible establishment of these species is discussed. Earlier records of Scobicia pustulata (Fabricius, 1801) from Malta are incorrect and should be attributed to S. chevrieri (A. Villa & J.B. Villa, 1835). -

A new and potentially devastating pest of oaks, Quercus spp., has been discovered in southern California. The goldspotted oak borer, Agrilus coxalis Waterhouse (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), colonizes the sapwood surface and phloem of the main stem and larger branches of at least three species of Quercus in San Diego Co., California. Larval feeding kills patches and strips of the phloem and cambium resulting in crown die back followed by mortality. In a survey of forest stand conditions at three sites in this area, 67% of the Quercus trees were found with external or internal evidence of A. coxalis attack. The literature and known distribution of A. coxalis are reviewed, and similarities in the behavior and impact of this species with other tree-killing Agrilus spp. are discussed. Key Words. FORWARD Every year, approximately 5.1 billion pounds of pesticides are used in the United States alone. Pesticides are intentionally toxic substances associated with birth defects, mutations, reproductive effects and cancer. Exposing our families to these pesticides makes them especially vulnerable to loss of brain function, damage to their reproductive systems, childhood leukemia, soft tissue sarcoma, neuroblastoma, Wilms' tumor, Ewing's sarcoma, nonHodgkins lymphoma, brain cancer, colorectal cancer and testes cancer. Many "inert" ingredients found in pesticides are suspected carcinogens and have been linked to central nervous system disorders, liver and kidney damage, birth defects and many other serious threats to our health. The warning label on Roundup is 10 pages alone! So why do we continue to use them? Is it possible the loss of brain function associated with pesticide use is what is driving our decision to continue using them? 5.1 billion pounds are being dumped on our gardens, lawns, trees, shrubs, and making their way into our rivers, our water supply, our food supply and our bodies. We are slowly poisoning ourselves and our environment. 96% of all fish analyzed in major rivers and streams contain residues of one or several pesticides. 100% of all surface water contains one or more pesticides. Pesticides, and especially herbicides, are contaminating our water supply. Removal is costly and difficult, and not always 100% effective. Pesticides are suspected to be the cause of amphibian declines and mutations as well as the rapid decline of our most important pollinator, the honey bee. -

Introduction Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz, Euphorbiaceae) constitutes one of the main staple foods in sub-Saharan Africa and is consumed in a variety of forms. In West Africa, cassava is mainly stored as dried sliced parts of the root, the so-called cassava chips. For instance, in Togo 120,000 to 150,000 t of cassava chips are produced annually (Adam, 1988), and most are stored. The bostrichids Dinoderus spp and Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) are important storage pests of cassava chips in tropical Africa (Nyakunga, 1982; Hodges et al., 1985). In Tanzania losses of 73% on fermented and of 52% on unfermented cassava chips were recorded after a * Corresponding author. -

Ges. 98 91-97 München, 15.10.2008 ISSN 0340-4943 A review of the literature on the life history of Bostrichidae (Coleoptera) Lan-Yu LIU, Klaus SCHÖNITZER & Jeng-Tze YANG Abstract We review the scattered published literature in many languages on the biology of the beetles family Bostrichidae, and discuss it according to the type of breeding place (stored cereals, dead wood and timber, living tree) in which the bostrichids become pests. We summarize the available data in three life history tables. Introduction Bostrichids are commonly known as powder-post beetles, because of the ability of the larvae to reduce sapwood, particularly of hardwoods, into a powdery frass. Hence, the beetles are of considerable economic importance to forestry and the wood-using industries (RAI & CHATTERJEE 1963), and a few species have become important pests of timber, wooden works and ancient structures in tropical countries (HICKIN 1975). Except for the economically important species, such as the important pests of cereals (FISHER 1950, CABI 2008 ), Rhyzopertha dominica (FABRICIUS, 1792) and Prostephanus truncatus (HORN, 1878), and the important pests of wooden and bamboo structures (FISHER 1950; GERBERG 1957), Sinoxylon spp., Dinoderus spp. and Lyctus spp., studies of the life history of Bostrichidae have rarely been made, because the propensity of the Bostrichidae to burrow into sapwood made the task of studying the life-cycle very difficult (RAI & CHATTERJEE 1963). -

Scobicia Chevrieri (Villa & Villa 1835), a New Species of the Bostrichidae Family for the Slovak Republic – Short Communication
JOURNAL OF FOREST SCIENCE, 60, 2014 (8): 349–350 Scobicia chevrieri (Villa & Villa 1835), a new species of the Bostrichidae family for the Slovak Republic – Short Communication J. Kollár Department of Planting Design and Maintenance, Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, Nitra, Slovak Republic ABSTRACT: Coleoptera research was conducted in the Mlyňany Arboretum of SAS (48°19'12''N, 18°22'09''E) in 2013. Once per week monitoring was carried out from late April to early October. During the sample collection process, an occurrence of Scobicia chevrieri (Villa & Villa 1835) from the Bostrichidae family has been recorded. It is considered to be the first record of this powderpost beetle species in the Slovak Republic. An imago was caught in a light trap which uses UV tubes in combination with white light. Its potential host plant seems to be Quercus robur L., or other Quercus species found in the Mlyňany Arboretum of SAS. Keywords: Mlyňany Arboretum; Bostrichidae; Coleoptera In the years 2005–2008 nine new alien species Sardinia, Serbia, Sicily, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, were identifi ed.
