Page 97 HEAD FOOTBALL COACH HENRY FRAZIER III Henry Frazier III enters his seventh season as head coach of the Prairie View A&M University Panthers. He became the 30th head football coach in PVAMU athletic history on Dec. 22, 2003. On Dec. 12, 2009, Frazier completed the ultimate journey he began six years upon his arrival at Prairie View A&M as the Panthers cap- tured their first Southwestern Athletic Conference Football Championship since 1964 following a 30-24 win over Alabama A&M in Birmingham, Ala. Prairie View A&M concluded the season with its second consecutive 9-1 record and posted an undefeated SWAC mark also for the first time since 1964. As a result of the historic season, the Panthers led the way with a conference-high nine All-SWAC selections including six first-team honor- ees. Individually, quarterback K.J. Black earned the SWAC’s and Black College Sports Page’s Offensive Player of the Year honor while safety An- thony Beck and punter Pedro Ventura were named to the FCS and AFCA All-American Teams, respectively. Prairie View also topped the charts in several statistical categories among SWAC teams as they led the league in scoring defense, pass efficiency, pass defense efficiency, third down and fourth down conversions. In the polls, the Panthers concluded the year with their highest ranking ever at No. 15 in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 poll, 19th in the NCAA’s FCS Coaches Poll, tied for first in the Black College Sports Page and second in the Sheridan and Boxtorow.com/ BASN polls. Once again following Prairie View A&M’s successful campaign, Frazier continued to make history nationally as he was named the winner of the 2009 . The award, which is given to the top coach on the Football Championship Subdivision level, marked the first time ever a coach from a histori- cally black college has won the honor in the award’s 23-year existence. In addition to capturing the 2009 Eddie Robinson Award, Frazier was also named Coach of the Year by the SWAC, College Sporting News, Coaches Association (Region III), Boxtorow.com/BASN, the ESPN HBCU Notebook, the Black College Sports Page and The Pigskin Club of Washington, D.C. Frazier also received the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Salute to Excellence Award by the Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation. After a history-making 2007 season, Frazier continued to rewrite the record books in 2008 as he led the Panthers to a No. 25 national ranking after the team posted its best record since 1964 following a 9-1 season. Due to his efforts, the national media took notice as Frazier was named the Sheridan Broadcast Net- work/Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year in addition to the American Football Coaches Region III FCS Coach of the Year. On the gridiron, the Panthers were dominant on both sides of the ball as they ranked second na- tionally in scoring defense and third in both total and rush defense. Offensively, Prairie View led the SWAC in scoring offense after scoring 30.7 points per game in addition to topping the charts in rush offense (172.7 ypg) and punting. As a result of Prairie View’s success on the field in 2008, a total of seven student-athletes earned All-SWAC honors while senior linebacker Zach East earned All-American Honors for the second con- secutive year. Frazier’s coaching philosophy centers around the belief that for a program to become successful, its players need to have fun on the field. "In order to run a successful program you must provide your student-athletes with structure and discipline," said Frazier. "Whenever you’re able to create that type of atmosphere for your players as well as making it fun for them, you have the basic elements needed for success." With the success Frazier has had on-and-off the gridiron, it’s no surprise that other programs have taken notice and recruited several members of his coaching staff away from him over the years. Despite be- ing young by coaching standards, Frazier has created an impressive coaching tree over the course of his 11- year career as he has had several former staff members serve as head coaches, coordinators or staff mem- bers on the NCAA’s FBS, FCS and Division II levels. Frazier is married to the former LaNier Turner of Washington, D.C. They have three children, Brijan (20), Brinia (10) and Henry IV (9). PRAIRIE VIEW A&M Football Weekly Release . .
