Cobitis ohridana and Barbatula zetensis in the River Moraèa basin, Montenegro: distribution, habitat, population structure and conservation needs. Folia biol. (Kraków) 51(Suppl.): 147-153. In this paper, we report on the distribution, habitat, population structure and conservation needs of Cobitis ohridana and Barbatula zetensis in the basin of the River Moraèa in Montenegro. Our data show both species to be mainly distributed in the lower stretch of the main river and some tributaries in lowland habitats. Cobitis ohridana preferred more shallow water with a higher abundance of filamentous algae, while Barbatula zetensis was more numerous in slightly deeper water with more stones as a bottom substrate. Slight differences in the habitat preference were also observed between juveniles and adults in both species. Although both species are abundant in suited habitat, they have a small distribution area in the Moraèa basin due to the natural rarity of the habitat. According to our data, they are not endangered. Barbatula Leoparda (Actinopterygii, Nemacheilidae), a New Endemic Species of Stone Loach of French Catalonia
Scientific paper Barbatula leoparda (Actinopterygii, Nemacheilidae), a new endemic species of stone loach of French Catalonia by Camille GAULIARD (1), Agnès DETTAI (2), Henri PERSAT (1, 3), Philippe KEITH (1) & Gaël P.J. DENYS* (1, 4) Abstract. – This study described a new stone loach species in France, Barbatula leoparda, which is endemic to French Catalonia (Têt and Tech river drainages). Seven specimens were compared to 49 specimens of B. bar- batula (Linnaeus, 1758) and 71 specimens of B. quignardi (Băcescu-Meşter, 1967). This new species is char- acterized by the presence of blotches on the belly and the jugular area in individuals longer than 47 mm SL and by a greater interorbital distance (35.5 to 41.8% of the head length). We brought moreover the sequence of two mitochondrial markers (COI and 12S, respectively 652 and 950 bp) of the holotype, which are well distinct from all other species, for molecular identifications. This discovery is important for conservation. The spatial distribution of the water resources in Albanian territory is heterogeneous due to a high variability of climatic and land characteristics. The parameter chosen for the regionalisation is the specific yield. The long-term average of specific yield has a spatial variability of 10 to 100 l/s/km2 in Albanian territory. The data used include the period 1951-1990 of 80 hydrometric stations distributed in whole Albanian hydrographic network. The lower limit of catchment area (basin) of 100 km2 is accepted. As the result are established two maps. In the first one is presented the general regionalisation of water resources according to the concept of high and low water resources. The second one presents the more detailed regionalisation that includes 8classes. This is the first attempt of the regionalisation of the water resources in Albanian territory. Introduction Albanian territory is very reach in water resources. The spatial distribution of the water resources in Albanian territory is heterogeneous due to a high variability of climatic and land characteristics. Evaluation of water resources and their presentation in a comprehensive form is useful information for decision maker’s institutions, which are interested for a complex exploitation of water resources. -

Ellopo- stoma is a member of the superfamily Cobitoidea (loaches) of Cypriniformes, but does not belong to any of the currently recognised families. Lara Ibrahim Aachen, am 18 März 2015 Zusammenfassung Die Zulassung von Pflanzenschutzmitteln in der Europäischen Gemeinschaft verlangt unter anderem eine Abschätzung des Risikos für Organismen in der Umwelt, die nicht Ziel der Anwendung sind. Unvertretbare Auswirkungen auf den Naturhalt sollen vermieden werden. Die ökologische Risikoanalyse stellt die dafür benötigten Informationen durch eine Abschätzung der Exposition der Organismen und der sich daraus ergebenden Effekte bereit. Die Effektabschätzung beruht dabei hauptsächlich auf standardisierten ökotoxikologischen Tests im Labor mit wenigen, oft nicht einheimischen Stellvertreterarten. In diesen Tests werden z. B. Effekte auf das Überleben, das Wachstum und/oder die Reproduktion von Fischen bei verschiedenen Konzentrationen der Testsubstanz gemessen und Endpunkte wie die LC50 (Lethal Concentrations for 50%) oder eine NOEC (No Observed Effect Concentration, z. B. für Wachstum oder Reproduktionsparameter) abgeleitet. Für Fische und Wirbeltiere im Allgemeinen beziehen sich die spezifischen Schutzziele auf das Überleben von Individuen und die Abundanz und Biomasse von Populationen. -

We have come a long way ever since. From a small team operating a modest portfolio of activities in South-East Europe to a dedicated international team managing a diverse regional programme across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The path has been challenging and winding, and we have managed to travel this far by working closely with our Members and Commissions, who have greatly helped us raise the profile of IUCN in the region, build successful partnerships and open new thematic chapters Boris Erg, Director of the IUCN Regional Office in our work. Struggles Against Dams and River Diversions in Northwestern Greece
Struggles against dams and river diversions in Northwestern Greece (Sarajevo, 27-29/9/2018) Ioannis Papadimitriou Ioannina Ecological Organizations Net As one greek poet wrote “The rivers are the mailmen of the mountains”. So, in the beginning was Pindos mountain chain, which runs through continental Greece and shapes a climatic border between the more rainy western Greece and the rest of the country. Here are the springs of the longest greek rivers, flowing either to the east or to the west. 3 struggles against big dams or river diversions are the most interesting in the area, the first victorious in the past, the second continuing for many decades and the third necessary in the future. I shall describe in brief 2 of them, concerning Arachthos and Aoos rivers in Epirus Region and also Epirus Water Department (for Acheloos case, east of Pindos, there is another presentation). 1. Arachtos It originates in Pindos and flows to the south into Amvrakikos Golf. Since early 80’s there is the Pournari big dam in operation in its lower flow. The initial plans of the State Electrician Company was the transformation of Middle Arachthos in a system of successive hydroelectric dams. That’s why the water from Aoos springs dam was diverted to Arachthos after its use. The construction of the first planned, Agios Nikolaos dam, in the mountainous Tzoumerka area was announced in the mid-90’s, causing an 11 years struggle by local NGOs and societies, initially against the State Electrician Company and then against a private company. Finally the dam construction was cancelled by the Supreme Administrative Court (Decision 3858/2007 by Council of State).
