A VOICE from the DEAD Philosophical Arabesques
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by DCU Online Research Access Service A VOICE FROM THE DEAD Helena Sheehan Introduction to Philosophical Arabesques by Nikolai Ivanovich Bukharin (1888-1938) published by Monthly Review Press and New York University Press New York 2004 This is a voice from the dead. It is a voice speaking to a time that never heard it, a time that never had a chance to hear it. It is only speaking now to a time not very well disposed to hearing it. This text was written in 1937 in the dark of the night in the depths of the Lubyanka prison in Moscow. It was completed in November on the 20 th anniversary of the socialist revolution to which its author had given his life, the revolution that was in the process of devouring its own true believers, the revolution that was not only condemning him to death but demanding that he slander his whole life. This text lay buried in a Kremlin vault for more than half a century after its author had been executed and his name expunged from the pages of the books telling of the history he had participated in making. After decades, his name was restored and his memory honoured in a brief interval where the story of the revolution was retold, retold in a society to which it crucially mattered, just before that society collapsed to be replaced by one in which the story was retold in another and hostile way, a society in which his legacy no longer mattered to many. -
SYRIZA, Bloco and Podemos
Transnational networking and cooperation among neo-reformist left parties in Southern Europe during the Eurozone crisis: SYRIZA, Bloco and Podemos Vladimir Bortun The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. March 2019 Abstract European parties to the left of social democracy have always lagged behind the main political families in terms of transnational cooperation at the level of the EU. However, the markedly transnational character of the Eurozone crisis and of the management of that crisis has arguably provided a uniquely propitious context for these parties to reduce that gap. This research project aims to establish whether they achieved that by focusing on three parties that were particularly prone to seeking an increase in their transnational cooperation: SYRIZA from Greece, Bloco de Esquerda from Portugal and Podemos from Spain. For these parties not only come from the member states most affected by the crisis, both economically and politically, but they also share several programmatic and strategic features favouring such an increase. By using a mix of document analysis, semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observation, the thesis discusses both the informal and formal transnational networking and cooperation among the three parties. This discussion reveals four key findings, with potentially useful insights for wider transnational party cooperation that are to be pursued in future research. Firstly, the transnational networking and cooperation among SYRIZA, Bloco and Podemos did increase at some point during the crisis, particularly around SYRIZA’s electoral victory in January 2015. Secondly, since the U-turn of that government in July 2015, SYRIZA’s relationship with both Bloco and Podemos has declined significantly, as reflected in their diverging views of the EU. -
Portrait of a Marxist As a Young Nun

This text was originally written for a conference in Yugoslavia on Socialism and the Spirit of the Age in 1988. It was a first run at a work‐in‐progress called Navigating the Zeitgeist. home page: http://webpages.dcu.ie/~sheehanh/sheehan.htm e‐mail: [email protected] doras index: http://doras.dcu.ie/view/people/Sheehan,_Helena.html Sometimes I feel as if I have lived through eons in a matter of decades. The waves of historical change such as swept over centuries in the past seem to have swept through my world several times over already. And who knows what I have yet to see? I am perhaps only halfway through the time I may expect my life to be. In the beginning, there was little indication that it would be this way. It was such a stable world . Or so it seemed. It seemed as if all historical change was in the past and that history had come to a kind of final resting point. All important issues were presented as basically settled. The answers only had to be looked up somewhere. Here we were. Dwight D Eisenhower was president of the greatest country in the world and Pius XII was pope of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church, together personifying the stability and complacency of the world over which they jointly presided. -

Holding Lenin Together: Hegelianism and Dialectical Materialism— a Historical Excursus Adrian Johnston
C Abstract: Current reactivations of dialectical materialism often involve C R R I interpretations of Hegel and/or Marx guiding by benefits of hindsight I S provided by contemporary Continental metaphysics. However, between S Holding Lenin I I S Hegel’s and Marx’s nineteenth century, on the one side, and the early S twenty-first century of present materialisms, on the other side, there & lie the Russian/Soviet dialectical materialisms indebted to Engels as & Together: C well as Hegel and Marx. Especially for any reactivation of dialectical C R materialism that takes seriously the interlinked Naturphilosophie, R I I T dialectics of nature, and philosophy of science crucial to the Soviets, T I revisiting this neglected history promises to be of philosophical as I Hegelianism and Q Q U well as historical interest. Herein, I advance several connected theses: U E Starting with Plekhanov, Russian/Soviet Marxists are right to recognize E / in Hegel’s “absolute idealism” numerous components crucial for a quasi- / Dialectical naturalist materialism; Lenin’s break with Plekhanov is more political Volume 4 / Volume 4 / Issue 1 than philosophical, with the former never ceasing to be influenced by the Issue 1 dialectical materialism of the latter; Relatedly, Lenin is consistently both Materialism— a dialectician and a materialist, with there being no pronounced break separating the Engelsian-Plekhanovite materialism of 1908’s Materialism and Empirio-Criticism from the Hegelian dialectics of 1914’s Philosophical Notebooks; Apropos Bukharin, by contrast, there indeed is a pronounced A Historical Excursus break between the mechanistic Historical Materialism of 1921 and the dialectical Philosophical Arabesques of 1937; Finally, the theoretical dimensions of Stalin’s Thermidor can be seen with clarity and precision against the preceding historical background. -
Contradictory Transformations: Observations on the Intellectual Dynamics of South African Universities
Contradictory transformations: observations on the intellectual dynamics of South African universities Professor Helena Sheehan Dublin City University, Dublin 9 Ireland Journal for Critical Education Policy Studies, vol.7. no.1 ABSTRACT What sort of expectations of transformation of higher education have been aroused by liberation movements? Has the new South Africa fulfilled such expectations? This paper explores the promises and processes that have enveloped South African universities in recent decades. It focuses on the underlying assumptions shaping academic disciplines in the humanities, the debates contesting them and the social-political-economic movements encompassing them. It traces the impact of marxism, africanism, postmodernism and neoliberalism on the production of knowledge. It concludes that South African universities are caught up in a complex field forces where they are subject to conflicting pressures. The result is a state of contradictory transformations – one stemming from the politics of liberation and the other from the demands of the global market. It was the hope stirred by the prospect of significant social transformation that lured me to South Africa. The release of prisoners, the first democratic elections and the inauguration of a new president received massive international attention. Then it was supposed to be happily ever after and the world‟s media rushed off to other parts of the world. I wanted to know what happened next. What did the new South Africa mean in terms of the long march through all the institutions of society? How was everyday life different? How were health care, housing, education, media, literature different? How was higher education, the sector in which I worked myself, being transformed? What did the project of academic transformation mean for disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, history and interdisciplinary areas such as African studies, cultural studies, gender studies, subaltern studies? I decided to use my coming sabbatical to investigate. -
