  • Precious but Not Precious UP-RE-CYCLING
The sounds of ideas forming , Volume 3 Alan Dunn, 22 July 2020 presents precious but not precious UP-RE-CYCLING This is the recycle tip at Clatterbridge. In February 2020, we’re dropping off some stuff when Brigitte shouts “if you get to the plastic section sharpish, someone’s throwing out a pile of records.” I leg it round and within seconds, eyes and brain honed from years in dank backrooms and charity shops, I smell good stuff. I lean inside, grabbing a pile of vinyl and sticking it up my top. There’s compilations with Blondie, Boomtown Rats and Devo and a couple of odd 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters soundtracks. COVER (VERSIONS) www.alandunn67.co.uk/coverversions.html For those that read the last text, you’ll enjoy the irony in this introduction. This story is about vinyl but not as a precious and passive hands-off medium but about using it to generate and form ideas, abusing it to paginate a digital sketchbook and continuing to be astonished by its magic. We re-enter the story, the story of the sounds of ideas forming, after the COVER (VERSIONS) exhibition in collaboration with Aidan Winterburn that brings together the ideas from July 2018 – December 2019. Staged at Leeds Beckett University, it presents the greatest hits of the first 18 months and some extracts from that first text that Aidan responds to (https://tinyurl.com/y4tza6jq), with me in turn responding back, via some ‘OUR PRICE’ style stickers with quotes/stats. For the exhibition, the mock-up sleeves fabricated by Tom Rodgers look stunning, turning the digital detournements into believable double-sided artefacts.

  • The Potential of Informative Comedy Music As Supplementary Teaching Material
http://dx.doi.org/10.7592/EJHR2018.6.3.mckeague European Journal of Humour Research 6 (3) 30–49 www.europeanjournalofhumour.org Lyrical lessons: The potential of informative comedy music as supplementary teaching material Dr. Matthew McKeague Kutztown University of Pennsylvania [email protected] Abstract The comedic arts have provided opportunities for humourists to spread information to audiences, sometimes intentionally and other times as a side effect while trying to create laughter. Educators have also found success incorporating comedy into the classroom with humorous activities. While research regarding comedy as a tool to spread information or educate audiences has focused primarily on literature, broadcast media, and film, the area of informative comedy implemented through music remains relatively unexplored. In this paper, the researcher defines ‘informative comedy’ and takes a critical literacy approach analysing song samples of comedy musician “Weird Al” Yankovic—one of the notable comedic music artists in the 20th and 21st centuries—and discusses how his music could be used in a classroom setting. While comedy such as Yankovic’s is not designed to be an educational tool, the researcher suggests that his songs could be used as supplementary materials in the classroom to reinforce concepts specifically regarding cultural issues through commentary as well as lessons in science and grammar. A central aspect of this exploratory paper involves Yankovic’s mix of comedy and informative content focused on culture in the United States, using the popular music genre to convey ideas in ways that may be more palatable for wider audiences and that could be used to assist classroom instruction.

  • 1965 Falling Spikes: a Fake Tape
Source/Title: FallingSpikes 1965 The text says: FALLING SPIKES LOU REED, JOHN CALE, STERLING MORRISON, ANGUS MACLISE IN 1965 A NEW YORK BAND CALLED THE PRIMITIVES CHANGED IT'S NAME TO THE WARLOCKS AND THEN TO THE FALLING SPIKES, LATER TO BECOME FAMOUS AS THE VELVET UNDERGROUND. THIS RARE RECORDING FROM 1965 IS THEIR ONLY RECORDED WORK. Actually: it's a tape copy of the "Live at the Boston Tea Party" LP (catalogue Velvet 1, UK, 1985) but the album Side One is the tape B-Side (and Side Two becomes the A-Side). Tracklist (not given on sleeve insert): A-Side B-Side Heroin What Goes On (the rest) Move Right In I Can't Stand It I'm Set Free Candy Says Run Run Run Beginning to See the Light Waiting for the Man White Light/White Heat What Goes On (part) Pale Blue Eyes After Hours Equivalent: Tape 3, VU LIVE - BOSTON TEA PARTY (JAN. 10, 1969) (but it's a loose equivalent). Sound: Bad to Average. Side B is too fast, like the album, with clicks and tape whirrs on "Candy Says" and is basically unlistenable. Side A is average at best. Notes: What a gem this would have been, but it's either a bad joke or a deliberate fraud. The sleeve insert is badly copied and hand-cut with blunt scissors, the text says "IT'S" when it should be "ITS", there is no Cale or Maclise and sloppy copying splits WGO over two sides needlessly with the first part lasting just a few seconds.

The Velvet Underground’s classic self-titled third album, released in March 1969, by MGM, was a departure from the band’s first two albums in more ways than one. Gone was co-founding member John Cale, and in his place was a 21-year-old with Long Island roots named Doug Yule, who stepped right in. The record was also a stylistic leap, as Lou Reed describes it in Rolling Stone editor David Fricke’s liner notes, “I thought we had to demonstrate the other side of us. Fricke calls it “a stunning turnaround… 10 tracks of mostly warm, explicit sympathy and optimism, expressed with melodic clarity, set in gleaming double-guitar jangle and near-whispered balladry. Or as the late rock critic Lester Bangs put it, “How do you define a group like this, who moved from ‘Heroin’ to ‘Jesus’ in two short years?” How indeed do you describe an album which includes such classics as “Candy Says,” Reed’s ode to Warhol superstar Candy Darling; the aching love song “Pale Blue Eyes,” allegedly inspired by a girlfriend at Syracuse University who got away, with lead vocals by Yule; the inspiring “Beginning to See The Light”; the spoken-word narrative and musique concrete of “The Murder Mystery,” and the beautiful Maureen Tucker-sung “After Hours”? Celebrating its enduring longevity, Polydor/Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) has released The Velvet Underground – 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition.

  • Velvet Underground
IN MEMORIAM AND A FAREWELL TO LOU REED (1942-2013) The editorial collective of Situations deeply mourns the recent loss of Lou Reed. His heroic struggle with cancer was well known and even though he lost the fi ght earlier than we all wished, his capacity for change provides an inspiration for all of us. The political implications of his artistic production were vintage radical imagination; beyond the open sexuality and sexual politics on many of his songs, he also demonstrated great understanding of the ecological crisis and gun control in lesser known songs such as “The Last Great American Whale.” Reed’s corpus hopefully will be critically engaged by serious research in the generations to come. It is in the spirit of serious research that the Situations collective is privileged to remember Lou Reed in a retroactive fashion by reprinting Ellen Willis’ seminal essay (1978) on the Velvet Underground written in the heat of a struggle against nihilism that is reminiscent of Dionysian and cheerful excess, perhaps the subversive import of ‘the body electric,’ and its resurrection and redemption. Although a period piece, Ellen’s essay may well serve us a very powerful antidote to today’s cyberspace culture. The essay which follows here as a memorial to the spirit and struggle of Lou Reed and what his work meant to the generation of the Sixties and early Seventies will be found again in a forthcoming book, The Essential Ellen Willis, edited by Nona Willis Aronowitz (University of Minnesota Press, Spring 2014). The editorial collective wishes to thank Nona for permission to reprint this essay in this issue, Vol.

Alt-Nation: Revving Up for the Weekend! Vudu Sister – Household Items (Columbus Recording Company) Last year Vudu Sister’s debut, Bastard Children, garnered considerable praise as a mostly folk/ Americana release. I remember seeing them at one 990WBOB’s Mondays on Blast and thinking it wasn’t really my bag, hope Fuzek likes them. Flash forward to this past January when I caught them at Local 121, and it completely changed my mind. They were performing as a full band, blasting out grunge- inspired infectious rock ‘n’ roll and covering stuff like The Vaselines. I didn’t know what happened to have them change so dramatically but whatever it was, thought they should keep doing it. Now Vudu Sister is releasing their sophomore CD, Household Items, which continues in the vein of cranking the volume up and rocking out like a grunge hurricane. I was conversing with singer/guitarist Keith McCurdy about the new album and doing a preview for Household Items, but the physical CDs weren’t going to be in till a couple of days before the show and all he had it on was an iPod. So we decided to just drive around Providence blasting the record and even stop into the Scurvy Dog to hear what it sounds like in bar. As for the change in direction toward the heavy rock thud on Household Items, McCurdy said, “People who have heard the new record have been surprised. I did what I did before because I was alone, so you pick up an acoustic guitar. I never wanted to be a folk singer.

  • Gerry Bibby John Beeson
OPENINGS Gerry Bibby JOHN BEESON “CandY SAYS, ‘I’ve come to hate my body and all that it requires in this world.’” Against a sugar-sweet melody, Lou Reed opens the first track of the Velvet Underground’s 1969 self-titled album by quoting Warhol’s beloved superstar Candy Darling, who resolutely revised her body as well as her gender identity via hormone injections and drag. One could say that such a state of exhausted subjectivity and fractured self-image is a pervasive contemporary condition; this is, in fact, a central premise of Gerry Bibby’s performative encounters with a wide range of media. In chorus with sources of cultural critique including avant-garde literature and post-punk music, Bibby works to transform the structures, whether institutional or linguistic, that produce a subject’s experience of that condition—an aspiration that reso- nates with the Berlin-based artist’s formative years of Above, from left: Gerry Bibby, social and political activism in his native Australia.
