  • The Amis Inheritance
Martin Amis Kingsley Amis Writing and Writers Books Authors ... http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/22/magazine/22amises.t.html?_r=1&o... April 22, 2007 The Amis Inheritance By CHARLES McGRATH Ben Jonson wrote: “Greatness of name in the father ofttimes helps not forth, but overwhelms the son; they stand too near one another. The shadow kills the growth.” This Oedipal principle applies to all sorts of professions, but few more so than the literary one. It’s not unheard of for the child of an author to try his hand at writing. Stephen King’s two sons are writers, and so is one of John Updike’s. Hilma Wolitzer’s daughter Meg is a novelist, as is Anita Desai’s daughter Kiran, whose second book just won the Booker Prize — an award that has so far eluded her mother. But writers’ offspring tend to go into the family business with far less regularity than, say, the children of doctors or lawyers, and it seldom happens that over the long haul, and in the deepening shade, the younger equals or outstrips the elder — the way that Anthony Trollope, to take a famous example, bested his mother, Fanny. The exception these days is the curious writerly firm of Amis & Amis, founded by Kingsley, who died in 1995, and now run by his son Martin. Kingsley Amis, an indelible figure in British letters, is the subject of an immense and sympathetic new biography by Zachary Leader (published this month in the United States) that has already caused a stir in England both by reminding readers of how funny Kingsley could be and because of its frankness about his personal life.

The forms of literary tourism are analysed to provide a typology and from this the value of literary tourism is explained both from the visitor's point of view and the destination manager's. Current theories underpinning the existing literature on literary tourism, including Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital are reviewed.

ATLANTIS 26.2 (December 2004): 87–96 ISSN 0210-6124 Through the Looking Glass: America in Martin Amis’s Money: A Suicide Note Carlos Silva Campañón Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona [email protected] Martin Amis’s self-sufficient, well-wrought fiction demands a comprehensive perspective which highlights the relationship and interconnections between its constituent parts. The writer himself has made this clear through his emphasis on the indissolubility of form and meaning in a narrative which attempts to combine the aesthetic quality with an interpretation of the historical present. It is the purpose of this essay to develop an in-depth analysis of a significant motif, America, in one of Amis’s most representative novels, Money: A Suicide Note (1984). Through a formal, symbolical and historical reading of this motif, I will trace how these different readings support each other and open a window to some of Amis’s central tropes and topics, such as duality, otherness and the nature of the self in the context of the twentieth century. Key Words: self, dualism, otherness, postmodernism, America, Martin Amis, contemporary fiction. Martin Amis’s writing has been defined by Victoria Alexander as “a queer hybrid of a Nabokovian and Bellovian world-views” (Alexander 1994: 78). By this, the critic means that it is a fiction supported and enhanced by the tension between the formal and moral aspects of his prose. Through the recurrent presence of a fixed repertoire of motifs and thematic lines, we can simultaneously observe the workings of the aesthete in search of the perfect pattern and design and hear the musings of the social commentator and satirist.

The Aesthetics of Post-Realism and the Obscenification of Everyday Life: The Novel in the Age of Technology Madelena Gonzalez This article will examine how a post-realist aesthetics situated within a Baudrillardean realm of simulacra has come to dominate much of contem- porary fiction. The excessive consciousness of the “real” as mere artifice leads many serious authors to engage in an ongoing mockery of mimesis. Yellow Dog (Martin Amis, 2003), Fury (Salman Rushdie, 2001), Dorian: An Imitation (Will Self, 2002), and The PowerBook (Jeanette Winterson, 2000) are all works by major, well-established writers with international reputations, and they have been chosen in an attempt to illustrate some of the dominant tendencies in the British novel today. They all seek to renew a doubting diegesis through constant self-reference, whether it be to their own status as texts or through recourse to a perverted and ironic intertex- tuality which is used to bolster up their beleaguered poetics. As they en- gage in the cloning of creativity in order to produce the endless replicas and debased imitations of compromised originals, which they make avail- able to their readers as examples of a late postmodern and, usually virtual, “reality,” the very medium or mode of expression of the novel is put into question. The rampant technophilia which characterizes these examples may be representative of a wider tendency in the twenty-first century novel for which technology constitutes both an opportunity for experimen- tation but also an essential threat to its future.1 In competition with the JNT: Journal of Narrative Theory 38.1 (Winter 2008): 111–133.
