Rome (and Brigus) What’s one of your biggest challenges in your office? Like most public institutions, we struggle with funding to keep up with our growing deferred maintenance needs. Our institution has been in a growth mode for seven or eight years, but we do not have the funding or state support to add new buildings to our inventory. As such, our space needs are impacting our strategic goals. What’s a recent success? Our largest library is a modern building with no real sense of place, or entry. It has a very unloved central plaza that has a ground floor deck that is failing. As part of a library master study, we decided that we wish to convert the plaza into an atrium. After a deferred maintenance study, we were able to provide an analysis to justify the atrium renovation goal. What’s one of your most exciting things you are working? We are also studying the library building listed above as a 21st Century learning center. In addition to the new atrium, we expect to renovate the entire building, move the collection to a new off-site storage facility and renovate the building to include a mix of silent study, non- silent study, and flexible and active classrooms. Jean Kennedy Sleeman, AIA LEEP AP Jean Old Dominion University (ODU) How long have you been at your institution in your current role and how long overall? Interesting story, I was hired to be the University Architect starting November 2015, but the COO, who fancied himself a master builder, did not want me to use that title, so I was called the Department Architect to everyone’s confusion until the day after he retired, at which time my title was officially changed to University Architect. Where else did you work previously? I moved to Virginia in 1997 from to work for Hanbury Evans Newell Vlattas, which became Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas and then just Hanbury. Hanbury allowed me to do work on many campuses across the United States building a strong higher education background that I bring to ODU. Prior to this I worked for a design build firm called Cutler Associates out of Worchester Massachusetts. We did true integrated design build for complicated projects such as research labs, hazardous manufacturing, and some higher education – the seven years there were the toughest of my career and a great learning experience. Prior to that I worked in Boston for Dean Tucker Shaw and in Atlanta for Stevens and Wilkinson. Where did you go to architecture school? Georgia Institute of Technology - BS (architecture) and Masters of Architecture I was very fortunate to spend my entire 4th year at the Unites Pedagogigues d’Architecture (UPA) 7 in Paris which was established in the late 1960’s from the Ecole des Beaux Arts. UPA 7 was founded by students of Auguste Perret. What is your favorite building anywhere? This is hard and impossible to say just one as I have been fortunate to travel and see a lot of great architecture. Those that come to mind are:

• The Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation in Paris was the first time I felt that architecture was truly experiential and transformative. • The Refectory at Cathedral in England is one of my favorite designs by Hopkins Architects. • Mario Botta’s San Giovanni Battista chapel is a contextual gem. • The Kyoto Imperial Palace grounds are beyond beautiful. • Calatrava’s Oculus Subway station in New York – what a transformative moment after visiting the World Trade Center memorial. • Jean Nouvel’s Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre – wonderfully engaging. Jean Kennedy Sleeman, AIA - page 2

Where did you grow up? Or wish you grew up? I was the daughter of a civil engineer who designed subway systems, so we moved frequently to where his projects were; Boston, Seattle, Puerto Rico, Chicago and we ended up in Atlanta when I was in 9th grade. After college I moved back to Boston for 10 years before settling in Virginia Beach. Spouse/Partner’s name: Michael Sleeman Others in your immediate family (human and/or pets): We are waiting on a Eurasier dog which we are very excited about - well worth the wait. Do you have a favorite vacation destination? I don’t think I have a favorite single place, but more a list of places I want to go to or revisit. Standouts are a trip on the Dalton Highway in Alaska across the Brooks Range to the Artic Ocean, Kyoto Japan and Oxford England. What’s one of your biggest challenges in your office? I went from being a studio leader with a team to being the only architect. I have a lot of capability and people request my assistance on so many things that I am not focusing on the things that need my attention the most such as long term campus issues associated with resilience. What’s a recent success? The first building I guided from start to finish as the University Architect recently opened and I am thrilled to hear people describe the building as a new benchmark for the university. It has been my goal to improve the caliber of design on campus and the Chemistry Building is a solid start. What’s one of your most exciting things you are working on? Our New Health Sciences building is about to start construction and I think this will have an even greater influence on the campus aesthetics. We are also in the process of hiring a design team to start the $100M Biology Building in a challenging location that will be a great opportunity for design excellence and dynamically impact our campus.
