The artwork on these books was from the original Wanderer paperback covers, although severely cropped to fit the covers. In March Grossett and Dunlap discontinued publication of Volumes 66 in hardcover. The Hardy Boys Casefiles were the first major spin-off of the Hardy Boys series that either took Hardy Boys #19: Chaos at 30,000 Feet!: Chaos at 30,000 Feet! No. 19 after Motocross Madness of the Mystery Stories line, or took place in a different continuity altogether, due to the death of Iola Morton occurring in book 1 Dead On Target. No. 19 took over the rights in Januarythe books were all published in the US and just distributed by Distican in Canada with no publishing occurring in Canada. The Clues Brothers books were aimed at younger readers, particularly in third and fourth grades. The series was introduced in and was cancelled in for lack of popularity. Starting in the series will be available as ebooks. The Hardy Boys are now agents of A. The series is scheduled to publish new titles three times a year. This series is written in the first person with chapters alternating between Frank's and Joe's narration. This is the first series to be available in three different formats; paperbacks, hardcover books with dust jacket, and eBooks. The first four titles had an initial printing of 25, copies in paperback and 2, copies in hardback. The fifth, sixth and seventh titles had an initial print run of 25, in paperback and 5, in hardback. The Undercover Brothers also appear in a series of graphic novels by Papercutz. It features the Hardy Boys, Frank and Joe, as grade-school detectives. Three new titles are published yearly as paperback books and eBooks. In these books the reader controls the outcome of the story by choosing different options of advancing the plot, similar to the Choose Your Own Adventure books. The Hardy Boys teamed up with Nancy Drew in this 36 volume series of paperbacks. The Carolyn Keene house name was used for this series and the stories are more geared toward Nancy Drew fans. Although the Franklin W. Dixon pseudonym was used, the series was more akin to the then-current Tom Swift IV series and listed in the Tom Swift books as part of that series. Published as mass market paperback books under the Archway imprint of Simon and Schuster. Books are narrated in the first person with chapters alternating between Nancy's, Frank's, and Joe's view. Written and illustrated by outdoor journalist and survival instructor Sheila Link under the Hardy Boys imprint, published in hardcover in different format than the rest of the series. Both volumes contain seven short stories with Nancy Drew and the Hardy boys working together and are written under the pen-name of Carolyn Keene and Franklin W. Dixon listed as co-authors. Bartz wrote a foreword for this book. Carolyn Keene and Franklin W. Dixon also wrote a foreword. Because there were so many re-prints, several four different editions with different cover art exist. • A Last Talk with Leslie Mcfarlane
A Last Talk with Leslie McFarlane DA VID PALMER L eslie McFarlane, one of the world's most popular children's authors and a prolific contributor to Canadian popular culture, died on September 6th, 1977, in Whitby, Ontario. Born at Carleton Place, Ontario, in 1902, he worked as a reporter for several newspapers in Ontario and Massachusetts, and from the twenties to the forties contributed hundreds of stories and serials to the "better pulps" and "sn~ooth-paper magazines" (as Maclean's explained in 1940) in Canada, the U.S.A. and Great Britain. In this period he also published two novels, and under various pseudonyms wrote numerous children's adventure books for the Stratemeyer Syndicate of New Jersey (home of the Bobbsey Twins), including the first Hardy Boys books. In the late thirties and forties he wrote dozens of radio plays, and in 1944, after two years with the Department of Munitions and Supply, he was invited by John Grierson to join the National Film Board. During the next fourteen years he wrote, produced or directed (often all three) twenty- eight documentary fbs, winning several awards and an Oscar nomination. In 1958 he became head of the television drama script department at the CBC and wrote many television plays for that and other networks. He continued to produce occasional books (and revisions of earlier works) for children, and some of these later writings are reviewed elsewhere in this issue of CCL. Ironically, in view of this enormous output, McFarlane is probably best known now as the original Franklin W.
