SEVENOAKS AREA YOUTH TRUST

SAYT is very thankful that after a long time of waiting and wondering we have appointed Beth Holgate as full time youth worker to work alongside Julie Boddington. Beth started in early September and is quickly learning her way round Sevenoaks, its schools and places where young people congregate after school. However, for most of the year Julie has been the sole worker. By careful planning and volunteers help, it has been possible to keep all the work running even if with less intensity.

One encouraging new development is that there is now a small Christian group that meets regularly at Knole Academy. Last term SAYT was involved in a PHSE (personal, health and social education) day and this term was able to provide a speaker for 5 harvest assemblies.

Charlotte Marchant, the recently appointed manager of the House in the Basement, the Sevenoaks town council youth café, is someone Julie has known over several years and our regular input there on a Wednesday continues.

We have maintained a rota of volunteers for Thursday evening and are encouraged to have several new helpers. The bus is taken to wherever young people congregate. This varies, earlier in the year it was Bat and Ball but currently is favoured. Many thanks to those who provide cakes which are always much enjoyed.

Sadly Shirley Byles has stepped down as a Trustee and Bill Lattimer is planning to so our need for replacement Trustees is becoming acute. The Trustees meet about 5 times a year, for a couple of hours in the evening. The Trustees are responsible for the management of the Trust so if you could consider taking this on there is the opportunity to make a really valuable contribution.

For more news and an opportunity to meet Beth join us for breakfast at Vine Evangelical Church Dartford Road 8.30-10 am on Saturday November 24. Alternatively we are always pleased to visit churches either on a Sunday or to speak at some other meeting.

If you would like to receive our monthly prayer update contact the SAYT office, 39 Dartford Road TN13 3TE Tel 07763364185 or [email protected] Our website is www.sayt.org.uk

7 SEVENOAKS COUNSELLING – a professional service offered by Christians to the whole community

Over the past year there have been a number of significant staff changes at Sevenoaks Counselling (SC). We said goodbye to Julie Smith (Head of Counselling), and Janet McGrath (Administrator). The new Head of Counselling, Sue Surgenor, started work in September and has quickly settled into her new role. We also have a new Chair of Trustees, Clare Whittaker. We have a steady stream of people wanting counselling - individuals, couples, families, and parents concerned about their children/teenagers. The Counsellors, Family Therapist and Play Therapist are all kept busy and work with waiting lists.

We continue to need and appreciate the contributions received from churches and individuals, together with grants from Sevenoaks Town Council and Sevenoaks District Council. As many clients cannot afford to pay the recommended contribution, £45 for one hour, the donations enable us to accept all who come for counselling, regardless of their income. Christ Church URC also supports and contributes to our work by allowing us the use of The Bridge premises, with its four counselling rooms and office, rent free.

Our Annual Public Meeting was held recently in September and Revd Jane Edwards spoke on the question ‘Do I need counselling if I have faith?’ She focused on counselling, spiritual direction, pastoral care and prayer ministry and how these linked with a person’s faith. Her talk was much appreciated by all who attended.

We have also provided four professional development days for counsellors, covering the topics of Autism, Creative Approaches in Counselling, Endings, and Attachment/Shame. We continue to attract high quality speakers and these are well supported.

SEVENOAKS CHURCHES EDUCATION TRUST Sevenoaks Churches Education Trust (SCET) exists to sponsor and support Trinity Christian school, much like the Diocese of Rochester sponsors Church of schools. Membership is open to all churches located within the geographical area of Sevenoaks or Shoreham Anglican deaneries which are members of CTBI, the Evangelical Alliance or FIEC. Rev Chris Smith who had chaired the Trust from its inception stepped down at the AGM in May 2017 and was succeeded by Rev Gary Owen who had served as a director during this time. The other directors of the trust for 2017-18 are Rev James Oakley and Jamie Read. During the last year the directors have visited school frequently, attending prayer meetings and ministers' breakfast and seeking to encourage other ministers and church members to do the same. Rev Gary Owen sat on the interview panel for the new chaplain and Rev James Oakley is facilitating a prayer rota so that each SCET member church is encouraged to spend a week in concerted prayer for the school (with the school also praying for the church). Rev Gary will have completed the maximum 6 year period of service by the AGM in May 2019 and so will step down as Chair. We would be glad to welcome nominations for new directors and would be especially pleased to welcome new directors from the free churches of the area.

Revd Gary Owen

'Trinity School now has 800 pupils and six year groups. We continue to be blessed by our relationships with the 30 churches which make up our sponsoring body: Sevenoaks Churches Education Trust. Significant highlights in the past year include our first ever GCSE results, which are expected to put is in the top quartile of all schools for academic attainment when the full analysis is published; the launch of our new Sixth Form with 60 pupils; the recruitment of a new Chaplain, Anna Graham; and a request from KCC that we should expand permanently by 50% to 180 pupils in each year group in response to very strong demand for places. This expansion awaits a decision on planning permission for the required expansion of our building.

Our pupils continue to serve alongside local churches and charities through our community service placements. Church leaders and others regularly come to school for prayer breakfasts and meetings. Any church interested in participating in prayer meetings or community service placements should contact Anna Graham at the school.'

9 SEVENOAKS CHURCHES GROUP FOR SOCIAL CONCERN - Compassion Befrienders . . . Sevenoaks Child Contact Centre . . . Family Mentoring Team . . . Crosslight Advice With huge thanks and gratitude to all the volunteers in these four initiatives, without whose time and energy, none of this would be possible. During the last year the committee has consisted of Graham Roper (Chair), Rosemary Wakefield (Treasurer), Sharon Lester, Simon Dawes, Angela Painter and Avril Hunter as our SDC representative. However, since our last committee meeting both Sharon Lester and Simon Dawes have had to step down. My grateful thanks to Sharon and Simon for their considerable input and support. Avril Hunter has kindly agreed to continue as the representative for Sevenoaks District Council and we are extremely grateful for her involvement. And can I thank all my colleagues on the group, for their involvement and support. If you would be interested in joining our group, please let Graham Roper know. There is no doubt that the environment in which we operate continues to become more challenging. There is increasing deprivation and many who suffer are also beset with other issues, making many aspects of life a continual challenge. There has never been a greater need for volunteers and for the church to be actively supporting and campaigning for those in need in our community. We are pleased to say that the existing projects continue to work effectively throughout the area:-  Befrienders. Currently have a team of 14 members befriending 20 people, with a further 3 to be taken on. More volunteers are required, particularly one or two men!  Sevenoaks Child Contact Centre is currently serving 4 families. They are now part of the NACCC referral system which will help reaching more families in need.  Family Mentoring are now receiving referrals from a number of agencies and have been visiting local schools, who are making referrals. Please, more mentors needed!  Debt Advice (now Crosslight Advice) continues to be busy with new cases being added every week. More advisers urgently needed!

We are so grateful to all the churches for the various forms of support given that enable these projects to continue their vital work. Please pray and think if volunteering for one of these projects might be an opportunity for you. Needless to say, financial support remains vitally important. For all the projects there is a need to meet all the usual running costs, insurance, postage, telephone etc, and these costs are ongoing. The SCGSC accounts summary for the year ending 30th June 2017 is: Balance B/F £2471.49 Income £1151.18 Expenditure £1681.10 Balance C/F £1941.57

NORTH WEST FELLOWSHIP REPORT

We welcomed Revd Anne Bourne as a Representative for St Luke's Church, following Canon Mark Griffin’s move to the Canterbury Diocese in July 2018, Also to Revd Angela Rigby from St John's URC. Alan Chart very kindly assisted as Treasurer as nobody came forward to take on this role.

Revd David Kitley is our current Chairman.

The members of our Fellowship took part in the customary quarterly Services. The Advent Service 2017 was held at St Mary's, Riverhead. This was very enjoyable with lovely music and very well attended. The combined August Evening Services were held at The Drive. The Autumn Service will be held at St Luke's Church on Sunday 21 October 2018 at 6.00 pm. The celebration of St Luke the Evangelist with the offer of Healing will be included in this Service. Preacher will be Carol Morrison from Burrswood. The Advent Service will be at held at St John's, URC on 25 November 2018 at 6.30 pm.

The Lent lunchtime prayers were held in four Churches with a Buffet style lunch afterwards. The overseas charity was 'Porchlight'. A speaker from the Charity attended along, with someone who had experienced being Homeless and, had been helped by the Charity. They attended most of the lunches. It helps having the Charity Representative give their talk which will raise their profile. (one lunch did not go ahead, due to the snowstorm which started just before the Service was to start). £1250.00 including 'Gift Aid' was raised from donations during the Lent season.

St Luke's Church hosted the Good Friday Service on 30 March 2018 with other Church members encouraged to join in the walk to Blighs Meadow.

The Annual Pilgrimage was not held this year.

At each meeting we share news from the members of the fellowship and, encourage one another in prayer. Various events have been held in Churches, to help raise the profile within the Community they live or work in.

At the time of writing this report, a meeting was held with CTSD and NWF and agreed to merge the two committees. The NWF members will need to continue to offer to help run some of the activities as mentioned above.

Karen Forster-Pearce North West Fellowship Secretary

MINISTERS’ FORUM : The Sevenoaks Church leaders’ forum continues to meet bimonthly through the year. Denominations represented: Church of England, Catholic, Hope Church, United Reformed Church, Vine Evangelical Church, Bessels Green Baptist, Methodist. St Nic’s kindly provide a sandwich lunch. Our meetings give us a chance to share news, testimony, and pray for one another – bringing much spiritual support and encouragement.

PRAYER FOR SEVENOAKS 2018

It has been a mixed year with some highlights and some frustrations. The annual January assembly at Sevenoaks District Council Chamber was addressed by Police Superintendent .Michael Coltham who gave a very encouraging account of his life as a Christian in leadership in the Police Force and especially as senior police officer for our area. The periodic e-mail circulations have been limited due to ill health and other pressures. There were meetings at House in the Basement and The Town Council Chamber. We have continued to cover in meetings and e-mails the thanks we have to give to God through Jesus in respect of all the activities of CTSD but in particular Trinity School and their successful first OFSTED inspection; SAYT and its new focus as fresh youth workers join the team and all the support services that are now well established.

For the coming next two years the focus will be toward Our County Council and local councillors at that level and in our district council as they plan for the outcome of the exit from the European Union. This could affect the whole of Kent, being the gateway to Europe, dependant on the effects of border controls and pressure on already burdened facilities.

So please look for the details and if you are a County Councillor or have a member of congregation who is, then please get in touch. As ever all e-mails remain as anonymous and confidential. It is the issues that are lifted up in Prayer.

Pencil in 10 January 2019 for the first open meeting. My thanks to Isobel White for all her support and her tireless contribution to CTSD.

COMMUNITY SAFETY

We have certainly seen an increase in crime, albeit not as much as other areas of Kent or the , and Sevenoaks District remains one of the safest places to live, work and visit in the UK.

For me, a growing concern is the exploitation of young people. We work hard to prevent and protect young people, but criminals, from gangs and organised crime groups, are finding new and more complex ways or exploiting our young people. Be it, using their bank accounts to launder money for a small reward or using them to carry weapons or drugs, each crime concerns me greatly. Again, thankfully, the picture is very positive in Sevenoaks District but the threat remains.

In response to this I have launched a Police Cadet Unit in Swanley, which meets once a week on a Thursday evening. It is run by police officers and staff who are all giving up their personal time to run the unit. It seeks to develop and support young people who otherwise be vulnerable. It also seeks to build relationships with young people and the police. I would ask for prayers that this unit is successful and God can work through it to help protect the young people in this area.

We have welcomed hundreds of new officers in over the last year, with recruitment continuing. This is a real positive step, however, resources are still stretched. Officers and staff are facing violence on a more frequent basis, with many being assaulted just for doing their job. I would ask for prayers for their protection and safety. I would also ask for prayers that God will oversee the current issues faced by Police Chiefs, with less resources and growing demand, to do the right thing and focus on protecting the most vulnerable.

We are blessed to have outstanding officers working on this District, who deal with traumatic incidents on an almost daily basis. They approach their work with bravery and courage, willing to go into places that no one else would and deal with things that no one else could imagine. I would ask for prayer that God blesses them in their work, and that those who haven’t found Him yet will see the work He is doing.

Despite the challenges and threats I have mentioned, we should be proud to live in such a vibrant community, where everyone is valued and respected. An area where crime is low and we have a police service that, in my opinion, is still the best in the World.

Nick Finnis, Community Safety Inspector
