  • Unfit for Prime Time
Unfit for prime time There is a time of the year in professional golf when the four tournaments collectively known as “the majors” are finished, the Ryder Cup, in even years, is through, and made-for- television and -sponsor events happen. Men pair with women. Seniors play against their peers’ college sons. Celebrities abound. The PGA Tour offers its endorsement sparingly, and while tape-delayed telecasts do end up on network television, they get a fraction of the coverage afforded The Masters. Professional golf properly refers to this time as its “silly season.” Many Pacquiao’s career is in the throes of its own silly season. A large difference between professional golf and prizefighting is that our sport affords its silly season Masters coverage. Saturday the silly season continued apace at MGM Grand – on Showtime pay-per-view, with additional promotional support from CBS! – as Filipino Congressman Pacquiao dominated an old and tired Shane Mosley for 12 listless rounds in a match its judges scored 120-107, 120-108, 119-108. Don’t trouble yourself with the math; it was a whitewash. The majors of Manny Pacquiao’s career ended in his rematch with Juan Manual Marquez, 26 months ago. Pacquiao had compiled an incredible record of 5-1-1 (3 KOs) against the prime versions of Mexico’s hall of fame triumvirate – Marquez, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera. Then the stadium concerts, made-for-television showdowns, and legislative feats began. Spectacle overwhelmed substance. One fight was about size difference with a faded veteran. Three more were about once-dangerous foes in new weight classes.

KATHERINE FIGUEROA* In 2010, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez was stripped from his WBC middleweight title belt that was then easily handed over to a boxing favorite. In 2015, two big promotional companies, Top Rank Inc. and Golden Boy Promotions, filed similar claims against manager and advisor Al Haymon accusing him of unfair and anticompetitive business practices. These incidents make one long-standing point clear: professional boxing’s current structure is an abyss of deception and corruption. Corruption is not only harmful to those intended to be harmed; corruptive practices also diminish the quality, creditability, and integrity of the sport. However, corruption in the sport of boxing is but a novel issue.

  • Q & a with Paul “The Punisher” Williams
Q & A with Paul “The Punisher” Williams It’s been 8 months since we last saw Paul “The Punisher” Williams in action. On July 9th he makes his much anticipated return. For several weeks several guys were linked with Williams before it was announed he would be fighting Japan’s Nobuhiro Ishida who was coming of a stunning first round KO over James Kirkland, however many felt this wasn’t a fight worthy of HBO who promply brought in unbeaten Cuban Erislandy Lara instead. It’s not something that concerns him, he’s hungry to get back to doing what he does best and wants to make a statement following his brutal loss to Sergio Martinez. Still only 29, with an imposing 6’1 frame to go along with a wing span of 82 inches, he’s a southpaw with a high work rate making him a nightmare for pretty much everyone from 147-160. Here’s what Williams had to say ahead of his comeback. Hello Paul, welcome to 15rounds.com Anson Wainwright – You’re returning to action 9 July on HBO. Can you tell us about this? Paul Williams – I’ll be fighting the Cuban Erislandy Lara in Atlantic City. I don’t want to say to much about him. I respect his ability and am looking forward to the fight but wont get caught up in a war of words with him. I am a professional and will handle myself like a gentleman. I’ll let my fists do my talking. Anson Wainwright – What are you looking at from your performance in this fight to move forward? Paul Williams – What I’m looking for is me to go out there and put on a good show.
