Christa McAuliffe Elementary School as well as the policies and procedures of the school district. It is our goal that students and parents will read this handbook at the beginning of the school year. The bell for students to enter the building rings at 8:25 A.M., with school beginning promptly at 8:30 A.M. Please be diligent in the delivery and pick up of your children. TARDY STUDENTS We believe that every student should be at school, in their classroom, and ready to work by 8:30 am. We believe children who arrive after 8:30 am are tardy and will not be excused unless there is a valid parental explanation. Students will be allowed FIVE unexcused tardies during the school year, any thereafter will be referred to the District Truancy Officer. ABSENCES School attendance is important in order to allow children to learn. Excessive and unnecessary absences can only hinder a child's growth in education. Parents are urged to cooperate by encouraging pupils to attend school regularly, and to be at school on time. Please avoid appointments or shopping trips during the school hours. If a student is absent from school: • Parents must notify school by 8:30. The school secretary will call your home if no call is received by 9:30 a.m. • He/she must make up all work missed. If a student knows before hand that he/she will be absent: • The parents should complete a pre-arranged absence form requesting that the absence be considered an excused absence. Forms are available on the parent zone of our website or in the office. • He/she should make arrangements for his/her assignments to be completed after he/she returns to school. If a child is absent from school, he/she has two days for every day missed to makeup school assignments. In some cases, the teacher may request that the child stay after for individual tutoring. Makeup school assignments will be completed upon return to school. Teachers will assemble makeup school assignments while the student is absent. Make up work will be given to the student upon his/her return to school. When a student is absent because of illness, makeup work may be picked up from the student's teacher(s) after school is dismissed for the day. If at all possible, students should arrange to have their medical and/or dental appointments after school or on Monday’s after 2:00p.m. early release. These are excused absences if a written excuse is presented to your child's teacher at the start of the school day. Students will automatically be referred to the District Truancy Officer after 10 unexcused absences. ~ 4 ~ CHECK IN/OUT OF STUDENTS Any student entering school after 8:30 am or returning from an appointment must check in at the front office. Appointments should be scheduled before and after school if at all possible. If you need to check out a child early, please come

For the purpose of this report, accountability journalism is considered a form of journalism that: ● Holds powers accountable and influences public policy. ● Informs the public on critical information needs. ● Serves as a community-based conduit to help understand local communities and their priorities. ● Highlights underlying systemic issues. Identifies the need for solutions at the societal level. The Media Landscape Study focused deeply on four selected counties in Colorado — Alamosa, La Plata, Montezuma and Weld — and included newspapers, radio, television, online and other, non-traditional sources of local news, information, storytelling and analysis (e.g., college journalism programs, newsletters, email listservs, library information, storytelling initiatives). Researchers at the University of Denver and Hearken used a mixed-methodological approach for the study, which included a statewide survey of journalists, a content analysis of news stories published within the selected Colorado communities, community listening and a community-led design component. This study was conducted from March 2020 to September 2020.

GREELEY, Colo., July 8, 2020 –Neil Best, President and CEO of Community Radio of Northern Colorado (CRNC), operator of NPR-affiliate KUNC and The Colorado Sound, today announced that he will retire on December 31st, 2020. Best began his career at KUNC as a weekend announcer in 1973 and served as News & Public Affairs Director and Program Director before becoming General Manager in 1993 and President/CEO in 2009. Under Best’s leadership, KUNC became an independent, community-licensed station in 2001, when a group of listeners formed The Friends of KUNC and raised $2 million in 20 days to purchase the station’s license from the University of Northern Colorado and preserve it as an independent alternative to Colorado Public Radio. Since leaving the university, KUNC spun off its diverse music discovery programming onto The Colorado Sound, a full-time music station, in 2016, and has built the largest newsroom in Northern Colorado in order to provide news and information 24-hours a day. “It feels like I never have had to work a day in my life. I’m fortunate to come in each day and be part of an organization that values community and in turn is valued by the community,” Best says. Best currently serves as the President of Western States Public Radio and is a member of the Colorado Humanities Board of Directors. He has served on various advisory committees for NPR, and on the board of directors of Public Radio Program Directors, Inc., the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's Next Generation Project and Program Review Panel.
