  • The Field of Maltese Folklore
THE FIELD OF '::<::~~ MALTESE FOLKLORE ~,:~*' J. Cassar Pullicino EFORE a proper study of Maltese folklore can be made one has B to acquaint oneself with the ground already covered by others and with the material collected or published on the various aspects of the subject. It is most important that one should have a conspectus of the subject in its broad outline so as to identify the areas so far un explored and at the same time relate comparable type of material with one's own. findings as items of tradition arranged within an accepted scheme of classification. Such an arrangement is necessitated by the intricate fabric of Maltese folklore, which is today beset by many difficulties. More and more the culture "imported" into the islands in the wake of improved contacts with the outside world, a better standard of education, the presence of a sizeable non-Maltese community, and the cumulative effect of social pressures calculated to discard "local" folk-speech and manners - all these are pushing back the frontiers of Maltese folk-culture and transforming out of recognition the traditional ways of thought and behaviour. Admittedly, social and economic progress is welcome and inevitable; but as one probes deeper into the matter from the point of view of folklore studies the conviction grows that though much has been saved which otherwise would have been lost, a considerable portion of tradition is fast disappearing out of sight and mind, and much more remains to be done before sufficient document ation is assembled from which the student can attempt to reconstruct the picture of ancient Maltese folk-life.

  • CROSS of MALTA and LOGO USAGE Cross of Malta
CROSS OF MALTA AND LOGO USAGE Cross of Malta The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States adopted for its official seal, the Cross of Malta, which has a heritage of honor, duty, sacrifice and courage that dates back to the 11th century. Each design aspect of VFW’s Cross of Malta symbolizes something special. The Great Seal of the U.S. contains a modified scroll from “E Pluribus Unum” (Out of many, one) to “Pro Deo Pro Patria” (For God For Country) together with the cross and radiating rays symbolize the character, vows and purposes distinguishing VFW as an order of warriors who have traveled far from home to defend sacred principles. Its eight points represent the beatitudes prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount: Blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, the pure, the merciful, the peacemakers; blessed are they who mourn, seek righteousness and are persecuted for righteousness’ sake. VFW added the sun’s rays between the eight points and the cross. These emphasize the vigor and warmth with which the present-day brotherhood is pledged to defend the nation and to extend its mercy. Superimposed over the cross is the American eagle—the sacred symbol of a proud nation and people. While the Maltese Cross has religious origins and was used by the crusading Knights of St. John as a battle standard centuries ago, it is equally relevant today as a symbol of all those battling for noble ideals. Usage of the VFW Cross of Malta is for special and distinguished situations, and for official items to include: • VFW uniform cap and pins • Flags • Awards • Official executive correspondence • Select signage • Select VFW Store items 1 VFW Logo The official logo of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States was approved by the National Council of Administration in August of 2018 and publicly unveiled November 6, 2018.

Malta SHORT Pierre Sammut ARTICLEST he Influence of the - Knights of the Order THINK of St. John on Malta CULTURE Due to its geographical position at the cross- roads of the Mediterranean, Malta has wit- nessed many different influences. In Ancient times, it attracted the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginian and the Romans, then other con- querors including the Arabs, Normans, Ara- gonese and the Crusaders, the French and the British. But one of the most fascinating pe- riods of Maltese history remains to this very day the period governed by the Knights Hos- pitaller, better known as the Order of St. John, who governed the islands from 1530 to the end of the 18th century, when the French un- der Commander Napoleon Bonaparte took over Malta. Prehistoric Temples and Majestic Palaces from different periods are unique landmarks. The Knights in particular left their marks on vario- us aspects of Maltese culture, in particular the language, buildings and literature. Their period is often referred to as Malta's Golden Age, as a result of the architectural and artistic embel- lishment and as a result of advances in the overall health, education and prosperity of the local population. Music, literature, theatre as well as visual arts all flourished in this period, which also saw the foundation and develop- ment of many of the Renaissance and Baro- que towns and villages, palaces and gardens, tomy and Surgery was established by Grand the most notable being the capital city, Valletta, Master Fra Nicolau Cotoner I d'Olesa at the one of several built and fortified by the Sacra Infermeria in Valletta, in 1676.

  • MALTESE FOLKLORE in a MEDITERRANEAN CONTEXT CASSAR-PULLICINO, JOSEPH, Studies in Maltese Folklore
MALTESE FOLKLORE IN A MEDITERRANEAN CONTEXT CASSAR-PULLICINO, JOSEPH, Studies in Maltese Folklore. Malta: The University of Malta, 1976. xiii + 279pp. £M1.70. THE publication of this book of Guze Cassar-Pullicino's should produce different reactions here in Malta. The descriptive sections of the book, such as 'A New Look at Old Customs', 'Criteria of Physical Attraction and Sex Concepts' and 'Beliefs and Practices Relating to Birth and Infancy', as well as the twenty-three illus trations, some of which have been reproduced from references of the last century, must appeal to the Maltese who cherish our folk culture. For foreigners it is of value as one of the best glimpses of Maltese culture, to satisfy their curiosity as to who the Maltese really are. However, for the scholar, used to the science of Maltese folklore as content and. study, therein lies the compilation of new customs and the author's comments on them and on customs we have long known of, and also a new and positive twentieth century approach of how Cassar-Pullicino regards folklore for its own sake and a further development in the comparative treatment from a European context (mostly Italy and Sicily), as handled so well by Ninu Cre mona (1880-1972) and on whose steps Cassar-Pullicino followed for a time, to a wholly Mediterranean context as the author would have now ideally preferred to do. (For the Mediterranean context is nearer to us and a part of us: as regards this, Cassar-Pullicino has already made mention in his editorial to the first edition of the Maltese Folklore Review I i, 1962, p.

  • The Meaning of the VFW's Cross of Malta
The Meaning of the VFW’s Cross of Malta History shows that the Cross of Malta, the emblem of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, is 1,000 years old. Nearly ten centuries ago, the Maltese Cross was made the symbol of fighting men who were united by a solemn pledge of comradeship to fight for freedom and to aid the sick and the needy. Those ancient obligations are still symbolized by the Cross of Malta today for two million former servicemen who are the VFW. The Cross of Malta is the symbol of their battles in time of war and of their campaign to defend the God-given rights of human beings in time of peace. The Cross of Malta symbolizes the compassion, or sympathy, of those men and women for the needy. It is the sign of services, which our contemporary veterans render to help make living better for everyone. Upon joining the VFW, a person vows in the presence of Almighty God and the members of this order to maintain loyalty to the government, to the VFW and to his fellow comrades. When the Cross of Malta is bestowed upon a new VFW member, he or she is pledged to advance the principles of the organization. The VFW is also joined by our Ladies Auxiliary in our efforts. Together, the VFW and its Auxiliary foster true patriotism and strengthen the institution of freedom. They improve their cities, towns and neighborhoods through community service. They stand behind today’s fighting men and women and their families.

  • The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta – a General History of the Order of Malta

JOHN OF JERUSALEM OF RHODES AND OF MALTA – A GENERAL HISTORY OF THE ORDER OF MALTA INTRODUCTION: HOSPITALLERS Following thirteen years of excavation by the Israel Antiquities Authority, a thousand-year-old structure – once a hospital in Jerusalem – will be open to the public; part of it seems earmarked to serve as a restaurant. 1 In Syria, as the civil war rages on, reports and footage have been emerging of explosions in and around Crac des Chevaliers castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. 2 During the interwar period (1923–1943), the Italian colonial authorities in the Dodecanese engaged in a wide-ranging series of projects to restore – and in some instances redesign – several buildings on Rhodes, in an attempt to recreate the late medieval/Renaissance lore of the island. 3 Between 2008 and 2013, the European Regional Development Fund provided the financial support necessary for Malta to undertake a large-scale restoration of several kilometres of fortifications, with the aim of not only preserving these structures but also enhancing Malta’s economic and social well- -being.4 Since 1999, the Sainte Fleur Pavilion in the Antananarivo University Hospital Centre in Madagascar has been helping mothers to give birth safely and assisting infants through care and research. 5 What binds together these seemingly disparate, geographically-scattered buildings, all with their stories of hope and despair? All of them – a hospital in Jerusalem, a castle in Syria, structures on Rhodes, fortifications on Malta, and yet another hospital, this time in Madagascar – attest to the constant (but evolving) mission of the Order of Malta “to Serve the Poor and Defend the Faith” over several centuries.
