Venetia: Georgette Heyer’s Pastoral Romance Anne Lancashire Published online: December 2020 http://www.jprstudies.org Abstract: Georgette Heyer's Venetia (1958) is Heyer's most complex, literary, and also physically sensuous and emotional work, in being a combination of the formulas and style of Heyer's usual Regency romances and the conventions and themes of the literary genre of the pastoral romance. Heyer makes her use of the pastoral genre explicit, in her rake-hero's references, as he breaks off with Venetia, to their love affair as having been a temporary idyll in Arcadia--the traditional location of the pastoral; and the novel's character types, plot, emphasis on the natural world, and figurative language, together with a heightened artifice of writing style through much use of literary quotation, all come from the adaptation of pastoral romance to the typical conventions, manners, and style of Heyer's Regency novels.. About the Author: Anne Lancashire is Professor Emerita of English at the University of Toronto. She has published numerous articles and books on English medieval and early modern drama and theater history, and also publishes and lectures on contemporary popular American film. Warner Abstract Georgette Heyer, a writer most famous for her Regency romances, has not entered the portals of any literary canon, yet her writing has had an impact on the literary world in terms of her contribution to popular fiction. The body of Scholarship on Georgette Heyer is not large and this thesis seeks to contribute to and extend previous research through an analysis of her heroes, in particular, the Regency hero. This investigation into her heroes reveals that Heyer was influenced by the heroes of both literary and popular writers and, in turn, helped to create a new genre of romantic hero. -
