BY HEATHER MICHON CORRESPONDENT

The consulting firm Precision Hospi- tality conducted a study this spring and concluded that LMOA running the dining facilities themselves allowed “lower costs and the potential for a higher return on investment,” said Neelley. To fund initial inventory and staff, the Board of Directors approved a pro- posal to loan the dining facilities money from the Short Term Operating Account (STOFA). In theory, the pub could draw a loan of $227,000 from STOFA, but Neelley stressed that “the Board does not anticipate needing the entire amount to get food service up and running.” The directors also agreed to pri- oritize the hiring of a food and bever- age manager, delivering $56,000 from payroll initially earmarked for a new events coordinator. The events position will be filled later in the year. Neelley said Precision Hospitality will consult on menu planning, inventory control and screen applicants for the management position. At the moment, there’s no announced timetable for the opening of the pub. Ashlawn will be avail- able for catered events, with “regular res- taurant hours potentially coming later,” said Neelley. After more than two years, count- less committee meetings, and about $7 million dollars, the leadership of the Lake Monticello Owners’ Association (LMOA) celebrated the official end of the renova- tion and replacement (R&R) project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Fairway Clubhouse on Monday (May 1). “I have just one thing to say,” quipped LMOA Board President Rich Barringer. “Finally!” Treasurer Marlene Weaver cut the ribbon. Barringer lauded her as the guiding force behind the massive R&R project. Barringer also praised the design team, Grimm + Parker Architects of Charlot- tesville, and Nielson Builders for making the project a reality. James D. DeLucas, Jr., chief development officer of Nielson, presented symbolic keys to both the Ashlawn and Fairway buildings to the directors and LMOA General Manager Catherine Neelley. More than 200 people filed in to tour the 9,240 square foot building. Among the highlights are a new golf pro shop, updated locker rooms and interiors, an airy new pub space with six big-screen TVs, meeting rooms, and even a new headquarters for the Lake Monticello Broadcast Group. Both Fairway and Ashlawn Clubhous- es are now fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and are equipped with more energy-efficient HVAC, water, and lighting systems. One amenity that has not opened yet is the Fairway Pub. A request for vendors to run the pub and the Ashlawn Grille failed to yield any qualified bidders. Wade” It seems as if everyone has an opinion either “for” or “against” it, but few of us have ever bothered to actually read the Supreme Court decision. At its core it is a judicial balancing of a woman’s right to intimate privacy as found in the 14th Amendment and the State’s interest in the protection of human life. Roe held that a state did not have the right to unduly restrict a woman’s decision to terminate her pregnancy prior to the end of about the first trimester. A follow-up (and also mostly unread) Supreme Court decision is Planned Parent- hood v. Casey, which, while affirming Roe, substituted a flexible “viability” scale in part due to advances in reproductive medicine which is ever pushing “viability” back. Dissenting from the decision in Casey, Justice Scalia exploded with even more frus- tration than usual, wailing that the “deeply divisive issue of abortion” had come to “plague” national politics and “destroyed the compromises of the past” and “rendered Pictured from the 2016 festival: band student Marcus Luevano, theatre compromise impossible for the future.” He saw abortion as ultimately a matter for student Dominique Smith, and art student Joanna Sapp. legislation and not judge-made decisions . . . and best subject to rational compromises among us. If the right to abortion is deemed to be the right to “abortion on demand as routine birth control,” would we create a brutish world where no life had any value winners announced at all? Would there be too many scarring regrets for past decisions? And would we ultimately allow our moral compass to slip from our hands?

These are truly complex questions for us (and beyond the scope of this Note). And to help us we have been saddled with too many “one-trick-pony” politicians who only play upon our passions. They “gin up” their “bases” (what an insulting term!) to get votes and we become consumed with shouting . . . and cease thinking. Whether they are for or against Roe – no matter which – We the People are entitled to demand that political candidates who dare utter “Roe v. Wade” also give us their answers to ALL those questions and more. And to explain their plans to make this world a healthy, safe, and just world in which to live . . . and to be born into. We all need to listen . . . and then talk.
